Since glucose reuptake by neurons is mostly independent of insulin, it has been an intriguing question whether insulin has or not any roles in the brain. Consequently, the identification of insulin receptors in the central nervous system has fueled investigations of insulin functions in the brain. It is also already known that insulin can influence glucose reuptake by neurons, mostly during activities that have the highest energy demand.

Background: Preterm birth is a leading cause of infant morbidity and mortality; its multifactorial causes are an obstacle to understanding etiology and pathogenesis. The importance of cytokines and inflammation in its etiology and association with the short cervix is nowadays well-proven. To date, there are no reliable biological or biochemical markers to predict preterm birth; even though the length of the cervix has high specificity, its sensitivity with the cervix below 2.

Sepsis is a serious syndrome, characterized by the excessive release of inflammatory mediators and thermoregulatory changes, being fever the most common sign. However, despite the importance of Angiotensin (Ang)-(1-7) in controlling the inflammation, the role of the peptide in the febrile response and mortality in animals submitted to experimental model of sepsis is still not clear. In this way, we evaluate the effect of continuous infusion of Ang-(1-7) in inflammatory response, thermoregulation and in mortality of Wistar male rats submitted to colonic ligation puncture (CLP).

Ecuador was an endemic area for iodine deficiency; however, due to the population consumption of iodized table salt, the country is nowadays considered iodine sufficient. Despite the population consumption of iodized salt for more than 50 years, the prevalence of hypothyroidism has increased in recent years. A similar increment has been reported for thyroid cancer (TC) becoming the second most common cancer in women and seventh most common cancer in men.

Mayaro virus (MAYV, Togaviridae) and Oropouche orthobunyavirus (OROV, Peribunyaviridae) are emerging enzootic arboviruses in Latin America. Outbreaks of febrile illness associated with MAYV and OROV have been reported among humans mainly in the northern region of Brazil since the 1980s, and recent data suggest these viruses have circulated also in more populated areas of western Brazil. MAYV shares mosquito vectors with yellow fever virus and it has been historically detected during yellow fever epidemics.

New Findings: What is the central question of this study? What is the effect of an obesogenic diet on the control of hydromineral balance in rats? What is the main finding and its importance? The results showed that, when dehydrated, rats fed a high-fat diet drink less water than their control-diet-fed counterparts. Changes in aquaporin-7 and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α expression in the white adipose tissue might be involved.
Abstract: High-fat diet (HFD) increases fat accumulation, glycaemia and blood triglycerides and is used as a model to study obesity.

Studies have suggested an important connection between epilepsy and Alzheimer's disease (AD), mostly due to the high number of patients diagnosed with AD who develop epileptic seizures later on. However, this link is not well understood. Previous studies from our group have identified memory impairment and metabolic abnormalities in the Wistar audiogenic rat (WAR) strain, a genetic model of epilepsy.

Medulloblastoma is the most common type of pediatric malignant primary brain tumor, and about one-third of patients die due to disease recurrence and most survivors suffer from long-term side effects. MB is clinically, genetically, and epigenetically heterogeneous and subdivided into at least four molecular subgroups: WNT, SHH, Group 3, and Group 4. We evaluated common differentially expressed genes between a Brazilian RNA-seq GSE181293 dataset and microarray GSE85217 dataset cohort of pediatric MB samples using bioinformatics methodology in order to identify hub genes of the molecular subgroups based on PPI network construction, survival and functional analysis.
