Inorg Chem

February 2018

Department of Chemistry, The University of Memphis, 3744 Walker Avenue, Smith Chemistry Building, Memphis, Tennessee 38152, United States.

We demonstrate the synthesis and characterization of a new class of late-transition-metal-aluminum heterobimetallic complexes via a novel synthetic pathway. Complexes of this type are exceedingly rare. Joint experimental and theoretical data sheds light on the electronic effect of ligands containing aluminum moieties on late-transition-metal complexes.

Chronic stress is associated with palatable food intake and thus, the development of obesity. This may be due to chronic stress disrupting the regulatory effects of the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis on stress-induced eating. Thus, the primary objective of the current study was to investigate how chronic stress (CS) and cortisol stress reactivity affect eating behaviors following acute stress.

The 2014 outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in West Africa was multinational and of an unprecedented scale primarily affecting the countries of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. One of the qualities that makes EVD of high public concern is its potential for extremely high mortality rates (up to 90%). A prophylactic vaccine for ebolavirus (rVSV-ZEBOV) has been developed, and clinical trials show near-perfect efficacy.

Copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloadditions (CuAAC or click chemistry) are convenient methods to easily couple various pharmacophores or bioactive molecules. A new series of 1,2,3-triazole-linked nucleoside-amino acid conjugates have been designed and synthesized in 57-76% yields using CuAAC. The azido group was introduced on the 5'-position of uridine or the acyclic analogue using the tosyl-azide exchange method and alkylated serine or proparylglycine was the alkyne.

Cyclical unemployment and infant health.

Econ Hum Biol

November 2017

Department of Preventive Medicine, University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Memphis, TN 38163, USA.

This study provides evidence on the effect of cyclical unemployment on infant health. We match individual-level data from a detailed survey of mothers and their children in Memphis, TN, with 5-year average census-tract unemployment rates from the American Community Survey. Our findings indicate that a one percentage point increase in the local unemployment rate is associated with a statistically significant increase in the probability of having a low birthweight baby (a baby weighing less than 2500 grams).

A variety of ultrasonic techniques have been developed to detect changes in bone caused by osteoporosis. One approach, called the backscatter difference technique, analyzes the power difference between two different portions of a backscatter signal. Analysis gates with a certain delay τ, width τ, and separation τ are used to define portions of the backscatter signal for analysis.

Purpose: To investigate the contribution of radiation therapy to acute and late toxicity in pediatric chest wall sarcoma patients and evaluate dosimetric correlates of higher incidence toxicities such as scoliosis and pneumonitis.

Methods And Materials: The data from 23 consecutively treated pediatric patients with chest wall sarcomas of various histologies (desmoid, Ewing, rhabdomyosarcoma, nonrhabdomyosarcoma-soft tissue sarcomas) were reviewed to evaluate the relationship between end-organ radiation dose, clinical factors, and the risk of subsequent late effects (scoliosis, pneumonitis). Cobb angles were used to quantify the extent of scoliosis.

Seven analogs of the natural, α-helix peptides IsCT1 and IsCT2-found in the venom of scorpion -have been synthesized and tested to compare their antibacterial and hemolytic activity against natural peptides. In general, results show that increasing hydrophobicity by substituting positions 5 and 9 of the sequences with alanine, valine, and leucine, enhances antibacterial activity. However, this also increases hemolytic activity.

The G protein-coupled receptor Smoothened (Smo) is the signal transducer of the Sonic Hedgehog (Shh) pathway. Smo signals through G protein-dependent and -independent routes, with G protein-independent canonical signaling to Gli effectors requiring Smo accumulation in the primary cilium. The mechanisms controlling Smo activation and trafficking are not yet clear but likely entail small-molecule binding to pockets in its extracellular cysteine-rich domain (CRD) and/or transmembrane bundle.

The role of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) in social behavior regulation is not fully understood. While 5-HT release in nuclei of the social behavior network has generally been associated with inhibition of aggressive behavior across multiple classes of vertebrates, less is known about its effects on sexual, especially non-copulatory courtship display behaviors. Furthermore, most research has examined effects at 5-HT release sites, while studies examining the behavioral relevance of source cell populations have generated contradictory findings.

Similarity in volatile communities leads to increased herbivory and greater tropical forest diversity.

Ecology

July 2017

Instituto de Química, Universidade de São Paulo, Av. Prof. Lineu Prestes, 748, Bloco 11 Térreo, São Paulo, São Paulo, 05508-000, Brasil.

A longstanding paradigm in ecology is that there are positive associations between herbivore diversity, specialization, and plant species diversity, with a focus on taxonomic diversity. However, phytochemical diversity is also an informative metric, as insect herbivores interact with host plants not as taxonomic entities, but as sources of nutrients, primary metabolites, and mixtures of attractant and repellant chemicals. The present research examines herbivore responses to phytochemical diversity measured as volatile similarity in the tropical genus Piper.

Objective: Recollection and familiarity are independent processes that contribute to memory performance. Recollection is dependent on attentional control, which has been shown to be disrupted in early stage Alzheimer's disease (AD), whereas familiarity is independent of attention. The present longitudinal study examines the sensitivity of recollection estimates based on Jacoby's (1991) process dissociation procedure to AD-related biomarkers in a large sample of well-characterized cognitively normal middle-aged and older adults (N = 519) and the extent to which recollection discriminates these individuals from individuals with very mild symptomatic AD (N = 64).

Article Synopsis
  • Social behaviors in animals can be influenced by neurotransmitters like dopamine, which has different effects depending on the species.
  • In a study on male green anole lizards, high doses of D1 and D2 dopamine agonists impaired sexual and aggressive behaviors, but D1 agonists also affected motor function.
  • The research indicates that D2 receptors may inhibit social behaviors in lizards, but lower doses of drugs did not produce significant changes, suggesting that further studies should target specific brain regions to better understand these effects.
