Characterization of FAM114A1: A Novel Podocyte Cytoskeleton-Associated Protein Upregulated in Glomerular Injury.

Transcriptomic analysis of microdissected human glomeruli has suggested novel molecular signatures associated with MN by revealing several genes differentially upregulated in MN compared to other glomerular diseases. We focused on a novel protein, Family with sequence similarity 114 member A1 (FAM114A1) that was identified as the top classifier gene in the dataset. To determine the localization of FAM114A1 within glomeruli, we performed immunofluorescence (IF) staining on normal human kidney specimens.

Stress responses induced by perturbation of the ubiquitin-proteasome system.

The ubiquitin-proteasome system is key for proteostasis and its disruption can induce several cellular adaptations. Here, we summarize the range of cellular responses that are induced by perturbation of distinct components of the ubiquitin-proteasome system, and how proteasome stress in a tissue can induce systemic responses in distant tissues.

Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder in Pediatric Liver Transplant Patients.

Introduction: Following liver transplantation (LT), adequate nutrition is essential, as malnutrition may contribute to slower growth in pediatric patients and put patients at risk of complications following transplant. Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is an eating disorder characterized by restrictive eating patterns that compromise nutrition. Patients with ARFID may have significant difficulty meeting nutritional needs due to fear of gastrointestinal distress, making it especially difficult to manage in patients following LT.

Safety profile of abdominal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) performed for renal disease surveillance in tuberous sclerosis complex patients with vagus nerve stimulation: Safety of MRI for TSC Patients with VNS.

Introduction: Individuals with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) often present with refractory epilepsy and may be undergoing treatment with vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) to control seizures. Surveillance magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is necessary to monitor for the renal angiomyolipomas associated with TSC; however, MRI of the abdomen is not approved for patients withVNS therapy. We have many TSC patients with refractory epilelpsy who benefitted from VNS therapy, so we developed an MRI protocol that allows MRI of the abdomen to be performed in these patients to permit safe imaging of their kidneys.

Picky eaters: Selective microbial diet of avian ectosymbionts.

Individual organisms can function as ecosystems inhabited by symbionts. Symbionts may interact with each other in ways that subsequently influence their hosts positively or negatively, although the details of how these interactions operate collectively are usually not well understood. Vane-dwelling feather mites are common ectosymbionts of birds and are proposed to confer benefits to hosts by consuming feather-degrading microbes.

Animal Models for Mechanical Circulatory Support: A Research Review.

Heart failure is a clinical syndrome that has become a leading public health problem worldwide. Globally, nearly 64 million individuals are currently affected by heart failure, causing considerable medical, financial, and social challenges. One therapeutic option for patients with advanced heart failure is mechanical circulatory support (MCS) which is widely used for short-term or long-term management.

Interdisciplinary perspectives on accessing specialty evidence-based treatment for Medicaid-insured adolescents with eating disorders.

Background: Family-based treatment (FBT), the leading intervention for adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN), is severely understudied in outpatient care settings that serve publicly-insured populations. Many individuals with public insurance are lower-income, racially and ethnically diverse, and experience barriers to accessing evidence-based interventions for eating disorders (EDs).

Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten interdisciplinary providers who provide specialty care to youth with EDs in an inpatient and/or outpatient medical setting.

Targeted Bmal1 restoration in muscle prolongs lifespan with systemic health effects in aging model.

Disruption of the circadian clock in skeletal muscle worsens local and systemic health, leading to decreased muscle strength, metabolic dysfunction, and aging-like phenotypes. Whole-body knockout mice that lack Bmal1, a key component of the molecular clock, display premature aging. Here, by using adeno-associated viruses, we rescued Bmal1 expression specifically in the skeletal muscle fibers of Bmal1-KO mice and found that this engaged the circadian clock and clock output gene expression, contributing to extended lifespan.

A reflection on faces seen under mirror reversal.

Much of our visual experience of faces, including our own, is mediated by technology, for example when a digital photo depicts a mirror reversal of reality. How does this difference in visual experience affect judgments about appearance? Here, we asked participants to view their likeness in photographs that were reversed (as when viewed in a mirror) or not reversed (as when viewed directly). Observers also perceptually adapted (or not) to the reversed or non-reversed images in a 2 × 2 design.

The structure of pathological personality traits and temperament in a Persian community sample.

The present study examined the extent to which the currently established factor structure of the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5; Krueger et al., 2013) generalizes to a large Persian community sample, as well as relations between the resulting PID-5 factors and two temperament measures. Cross-sectional data came from 946 adults (65% female) from western Iran.

Multidisciplinary care meeting practices across diverse international settings.

Purpose: Multidisciplinary care (MDC) meetings improve the quality of cancer care by providing a space for interdisciplinary communication. The Pediatric Oncology Facility Integrated Local Evaluation (PrOFILE) tool assesses MDC meetings as part of the Service Integration module. We aimed to evaluate the characteristics of MDC meetings at institutions that completed PrOFILE.

It Takes a Village: Health and Old-Age Support in China.

How do older individuals cope with health impairments and the potential economic losses that ensue? Exploiting longitudinal data on a nationally representative sample of Chinese seniors, we investigate whether and how familial economic support responds to sudden and sizable changes in health. We find that both financial and instrumental support from children go up following a health shock. Furthermore, financial transfers coming from siblings, other relatives and friends increase by a larger percentage than those from children.

Assessment of the quality of interdisciplinary communication (CritCom): evaluation and refinement of a center summary report.

Communication failures among clinicians in the ICU (intensive care unit) often lead to worse patient outcomes. CritCom is a bilingual (English and Spanish) tool to evaluate the quality of interdisciplinary communication around patient deterioration for pediatric oncology patients. The use of reports, such as the CritCom report, as dissemination methods lead to quicker knowledge translation and implementation of research findings into policy.

Accuracy of dental implant placement using different dynamic navigation and robotic systems: an in vitro study.

Computer-aided implant surgery has undergone continuous development in recent years. In this study, active and passive systems of dynamic navigation were divided into active dynamic navigation system group and passive dynamic navigation system group (ADG and PDG), respectively. Active, passive and semi-active implant robots were divided into active robot group, passive robot group and semi-active robot group (ARG, PRG and SRG), respectively.

6-Cyanodopamine is a novel catecholamine released from rabbit isolated heart. However, it is not known whether this catecholamine presents any biological activity. Here, it was evaluated whether 6-cyanodopamine (6-CYD) is released from rat vas deferens and its effect on this tissue contractility.

Intergenerational coping: Examining how caregiver and child coping relate to resilience in bereaved children.

The death of a loved one can have harmful effects on children's mental health, yet some bereaved children exhibit resilience. Various caregiver and child coping strategies, including active and avoidant coping, may affect the psychosocial functioning of bereaved children. The current study recruited 78 bereaved children aged 8-17 and one of their caregivers to explore: 1) how caregivers' coping strategies affect their child's coping strategies and resilience, and 2) associations between children's coping and their resilience.

Many animals migrate across regions of their geographic range as part of extended events, with groups of individuals proceeding through areas of travel on several successive days. Early migrating individuals may have an advantage over late migrating individuals by gaining early access to the resources at the eventual destination. For situations where early access to resources would provide an advantage, specific sets of locomotor traits might be found among individuals that are earlier migrators.

Lifetime stressor exposure is associated with greater rewarding effects of stress-related eating.

Acute stressors tend to shift preferences toward comfort foods, yet they do not ubiquitously increase the amount of food consumed. Moreover, although many individuals eat more under stress, others eat less or show no change. Although the precise mechanisms explaining this variability in stress-related eating are unknown, they may be driven by individual differences in the rewarding effects of comfort eating, which are enhanced by greater lifetime stressor exposure.

Sonic Hedgehog activates prostaglandin signaling to stabilize primary cilium length.

Sonic Hedgehog (SHH) is a driver of embryonic patterning that, when corrupted, triggers developmental disorders and cancers. SHH effector responses are organized through primary cilia (PC) that grow and retract with the cell cycle and in response to extracellular cues. Disruption of PC homeostasis corrupts SHH regulation, placing significant pressure on the pathway to maintain ciliary fitness.

Do pictures' emotional valence and arousal affect younger and older adults' narratives?

Emotional content, specifically negative valence, can differentially influence speech production in younger and older adults' autobiographical narratives, which have been interpreted as reflecting age differences in emotion regulation. However, age differences in emotional reactivity are another possible explanation, as younger and older adults frequently differ in their affective responses to negative and positive pictures. The present experiment investigated whether a picture's valence (pleasantness) and arousal (intensity) influenced older adults' production of narratives about those pictures.
