Straightening Crooked Nose with Precise Bone Refining.

Ear Nose Throat J

November 2024

Department of ENT, Tepecik Research and Training Hospital, University of Health Sciences, Izmir, Turkey.

Crooked noses pose significant challenges in rhinoplasty due to their complex anatomy, particularly in the bony vault. Traditional methods focus on osteotomies but often do not equalize the lengths of the nasal bones. This study introduces a novel technique using otologic drills to address this problem by shortening the longer nasal bone and aligning the nasion-rhinion line at the midline.

Functional and Cosmetic Considerations in Gender-Affirming Feminization Rhinoplasty.

Otolaryngol Clin North Am

September 2024

Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, University of California, San Francisco, San Francisco, CA, USA. Electronic address:

Gender-affirming facial surgery is increasing in prevalence, and rhinoplasty plays an integral role in its success. The nose displays considerable gender dimorphism, and maneuvers performed during gender-affirming rhinoplasty may differ considerably from those performed during cis-gender surgery. During feminization rhinoplasty in particular, cosmetic goals often rely on reductive techniques such as osteotomies, dorsal reduction, sidewall narrowing, tip narrowing, and alar base narrowing.

August 2024

Department of Otolaryngology, Samsung Changwon Hospital, University of Sungkyunkwan, College of Medicine, Changwon, Korea.

In recent years, the perpendicular plate of ethmoid (PPE) has become a prominent choice for bone-grafting materials. This study introduces the PPE split technique for efficient removal of the bony septum or the harvesting of partial PPE for septal batten grafts in rhinoplasty and septoplasty, particularly suited for cases with thick PPE. Herein, this technique was employed to minimize septal defects and prevent complications while achieving harvested bony grafts of the desired effective thickness.

Article Synopsis
  • Osteotomies in rhinoplasty are influenced by the mass and velocity of the mallet used, affecting fracture patterns, which has not been extensively researched before.
  • An experimental setup was created to analyze how different mallet masses and drop heights impact kinetic energy and momentum, leading to measurements of fracture lengths and angles in test bones.
  • Results showed that higher kinetic energy (KE) correlated positively with greater fracture lengths and angles, meaning that the speed of the mallet played a bigger role than its weight alone in controlling fracture patterns.
