Objectives: This study aims to investigate the molecular mechanisms of the combination of stellasterin, quercetin, and kaempferol - components of the phytopreparation ginseng (trade name Panax) - in the treatment of tissue hypoxia occurring in patients with viral and bacterial pneumoni.
Methods: An analytical single-center method of network pharmacology was utilized, involving 110 individuals divided into two subgroups: placebo and Panax phytopreparation. The therapy course lasted 2 months, after which physical (forced vital capacity, respiratory volume, oxygen saturation) and laboratory (total ATPase, Na+/K+-ATPase, glucose, leukocytes) parameters were evaluated.

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) encodes genes essential for oxidative phosphorylation. The m.3243A>G mutation causes severe disease, including myopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) and is the most common pathogenic mtDNA mutation in humans.

Strongyloides stercoralis is a parasite that has the ability to reproduce within humans, which explains its persistence for many years. It lives in the duodenum and ileum, between the enterocytes, and opens up to the intestinal lumen. Historically it is associated with tropical and subtropical rural areas, but its development has been seen in microclimates that favour the biological cycle.

Western equine encephalitis is a zoonotic viral disease transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito. Humans are terminal hosts and since they develop a very low and short lasting viremia, they are incapable of transmitting the disease. Most cases are asymptomatic, but it can present with high fever, myalgia and encephalitis or meningitis.

Objectives: To assess the incidence of diabetic ketoacidosis in coronavirus disease-2019 patients and their survival rate, and to compare their outcomes with diabetic ketoacidosis patients without coronavirus disease-2019.
Methods: The retrospective cohort study was conducted at Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, and comprised data March 1, 2020, to March 31, 2021, related to patients. who had diabetic ketoacidosis with coronavirus disease- 2019 in group A, and those who had diabetic ketoacidosis without coronavirus disease-2019 in group B.

Importance: High-flow nasal oxygen (HFNO) and noninvasive ventilation (NIV) are commonly used respiratory support therapies for patients with acute respiratory failure (ARF).
Objective: To assess whether HFNO is noninferior to NIV on the rates of endotracheal intubation or death at 7 days in 5 patient groups with ARF.
Design, Setting, And Participants: This noninferiority, randomized clinical trial enrolled hospitalized adults (aged ≥18 years; classified as 5 patient groups with ARF: nonimmunocompromised with hypoxemia, immunocompromised with hypoxemia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD] exacerbation with respiratory acidosis, acute cardiogenic pulmonary edema [ACPE], or hypoxemic COVID-19, which was added as a separate group on June 26, 2023) at 33 hospitals in Brazil between November 2019 and November 2023 (final follow-up: April 26, 2024).

Rationale: The impact of extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal (ECCOR) on work of breathing and aeration in exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) is poorly understood.
Objectives: The study explores the impact of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) and ECCOR on respiratory drive, effort and distribution of ventilation in AECOPD.
Methods: Patients enrolled in a randomised controlled study of the addition of ECCOR to NIV compared with NIV underwent oesophageal pressure measurement, electrical impedance tomography and parasternal electromyography.

Butorphanol-azaperone-medetomidine (BAM) is commonly used for white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) immobilization in captive and free-ranging populations. It is a federally regulated controlled substance requiring stringent regulatory compliance, complicating field application. A prescription-only drug combination, nalbuphine-medetomidine-azaperone® (NalMed-A) provides a less-regulated alternative for use by wildlife professionals.

Mitochondrial respiratory chain dysfunction and impaired oxidative phosphorylation are rare but significant causes of mitochondrial diseases in children, presenting with diverse clinical features. Combined oxidative phosphorylation deficiency type 23 (COXPD23), an autosomal recessive disorder due to GTPBP3 gene mutations, typically manifests as lactic acidosis, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and encephalopathy. This case report describes a male infant born at 35 weeks gestation, who exhibited severe lactic aciduria and hypotonia but no cardiomyopathy, which is atypical for COXPD23.

Pathogenic variants in either the mitochondrial or nuclear genomes are associated with a diverse group of human disorders characterized by impaired mitochondrial function. Within this group, an increasing number of families have been identified, where Mendelian genetic disorders implicate defective mitochondrial RNA biology. The PDE12 gene encodes the poly(A)-specific exoribonuclease, involved in the quality control of mitochondrial non-coding RNAs.
