Ethylene glycol (EG) is a contaminant in the wastewater of airports because it is commonly used in aircraft deicing fluids during the cold season in northern regions. Ethylene glycol by itself has relatively low toxicity to mammals and aquatic organisms, but it can lead to a substantial increase in chemical and biological oxygen demands. The contamination of water with EG facilitates the rapid growth of microbial biofilms, which decreases the concentration of dissolved oxygen in water and negatively affects overall biodiversity.

Objective: Non-invasive surgical approaches, including boiling histotripsy (BH), are currently being developed for the treatment of brain disorders aiming to avoid craniotomy and exposure of intervening tissues, and, thus, minimize associated complications. This work aimed to demonstrate the feasibility of BH for mechanical fractionation of human brain tissues ex vivo under B-mode guidance, with preliminary measurements of tissue stiffness via shear wave elastography.

Methods: Young's moduli of 25 human autopsy brain samples obtained from de-identified patients of 51-91 y old (median 77 y old) were measured via shear wave elastography prior to BH sonication.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compares clinical and lab data of chronic heart failure (CHF) patients with iron deficiency (ID) based on two different diagnostic criteria: AHA/ESC/RSC guidelines and a stricter definition involving low transferrin saturation (TSAT) and serum iron levels.
  • Among 498 patients analyzed, ID was identified in 83.1% using AHA/ESC/RSC criteria and 74.5% using the TSAT/serum iron criteria, with many patients meeting both sets of criteria.
  • Those diagnosed with ID based on the TSAT/serum iron criteria experienced more severe CHF symptoms, higher rates of anemia and diabetes, and showed significant differences in lab results and age compared to those diagnosed solely

Purpose: Emerging evidence suggests that the use of artificial intelligence can assist in the timely detection and optimization of therapeutic approach in patients with prostate cancer. The conventional perspective on radiomics encompassing segmentation and the extraction of radiomic features considers it as an independent and sequential process. However, it is not necessary to adhere to this viewpoint.

This work presents the results of studying dilute aqueous solutions of commercial (NO) · HO salts with = Ce-Lu using X-ray diffraction (XRD), IR spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS: EXAFS/XANES), and pH measurements. As a reference point, XRD and XAS measurements for characterized (NO) · HO microcrystalline powder samples were performed. The local structure of -nitrate complexes in 20 mM (NO) · HO aqueous solution was studied under total external reflection conditions and EXAFS geometry was applied to obtain high-quality EXAFS data for solutions with low concentrations of ions.

The burden of heart failure (HF) has been increasing worldwide in recent decades. Early diagnosis of HF based on the outpatient measurement of natriuretic peptide (NP) concentration will allow timely initiation of the treatment and reducing the incidence of adverse outcomes in HF. Unfortunately, the frequency of NP testing remains low worldwide.

Organosilicate glass (OSG) films are a critical component in modern electronic devices, with their electrical properties playing a crucial role in device performance. This comprehensive review systematically examines the influence of chemical composition, vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) irradiation, and plasma treatment on the electrical properties of these films. Through an extensive survey of literature and experimental findings, we elucidate the intricate interplay between these factors and the resulting alterations in electrical conductivity, dielectric constant, and breakdown strength of OSG films.

The article presents the results of the study of biochemical composition of sheep milk in the summer lactation period for 4 sheep breeds. According to research results, 18 amino acids were found in sheep milk. During the summer lactation period, the amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids, both the Ordabasy breed and the South Kazakh merino exhibit higher levels (ranging from 6349 to 6989) compared to the Kazakh fine-fleeced and meat Merino breeds (ranging from 5835 to 5500).

A genetic diagnosis of primary cardiomyopathies can be a long-unmet need in patients with complex phenotypes. We investigated a three-generation family with cardiomyopathy and various extracardiac abnormalities that had long sought a precise diagnosis. The 41-year-old proband had hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), left ventricular noncompaction, myocardial fibrosis, arrhythmias, and a short stature.

  • Dysmorphic concern is when someone worries a lot about imperfections in their looks, and this can be linked to body dysmorphic disorder (BDD).
  • A study looked at how men and women with skin conditions feel about their appearance and found that women generally had more concerns than men.
  • About 10.5% of patients showed signs of having BDD, with stress and feeling judged affecting both men and women, especially those with more serious skin issues.

Comprehensive study of retention influencing gas chromatographic parameters affecting linear retention indices.

J Chromatogr A

August 2024

Joint Research and Training Laboratory on Separation Techniques, Institute of Chemistry, Eötvös Loránd University, Pázmány Péter stny. 1/A, H-1117 Budapest, Hungary; Wessling International Research and Educational Center, Anonymus u. 6, H-1045 Budapest, Hungary. Electronic address:

Retention in gas chromatographic systems has a central role in the identification of compounds even if detectors providing spectral information are used. But linear retention indices (LRI) of a single compound originating from multiple sources tend to vary greatly, probably due to differences in the experimental settings of the determinations. The effect of gas chromatographic parameters on LRI has been investigated using 41 compounds - previously identified from food contact plastics - and n-alkanes (n-C-n-C) used as reference series.

Carbon dots (CDs) have gained intensive interest owing to their small size, unique structure, excellent photoluminescence (PL) properties and broad applications. In particular, pressure-triggered irreversible piezochromic behavior of fluorescent CDs was previously reported and attributed to the sp-sp transition in the carbon core or aggregation-induced emission under high pressure. Here, we report the reversible piezochromic behavior of microwave-heating synthesized CDs (named M-CDs) using ethylenediamine and aspartic acid as precursors.

A novel and promising way for creating nanomaterials based on gallium oxide is the ion synthesis of GaO nanocrystals in a SiO/Si dielectric matrix. The properties of nanocrystals are determined by the conditions of ion synthesis-the parameters of ion irradiation and post-implantation heat treatment. In this work, the light-emitting properties of GaO nanocrystals were studied depending on the temperature and annealing atmosphere.
