Many arthropods, including economically important pests of stored grains, host intracellular bacterial symbionts. These symbionts can have diverse impacts on host morphology, stress tolerance, and reproductive success. The ability to rapidly determine the infection status of host insects and the identity of intracellular symbionts, if present, is vital to understanding the biology and ecology of these organisms.

Raman spectroscopy is a powerful analytical method, but when the composition of the test sample is intricate, the original spectral data may contain noise and fluorescence background interference, making it more difficult to extract Raman spectral information from the original spectra. Especially the fluorescence background signal, which is typically several orders of magnitude stronger than the Raman signal, can even overwhelm or obscure the Raman signals, thereby impeding the qualitative or quantitative analysis of the Raman spectra. One effective method for removing the fluorescence background is shift excitation Raman differential spectroscopy (SERDS), which typically involves measuring two raw Raman spectra using slightly different excitation wavelengths, combined with reconstruction algorithms, to obtain Raman spectra free from fluorescence interference.

Microbial biotransformation of Zearalenone (ZEN) is a promising deactivation approach. The residual toxicity and stability of Zearalenone-14-phosphate (ZEN-14-P) and Zearalenone-16-phosphate (ZEN-16-P), two novel microbial phosphorylation products of ZEN, remain unknown. We investigated the cytotoxicity, oxidative stress, proinflammatory, and estrogenic activity of phosphorylated ZENs using porcine intestinal cells, uterine explants, and human endometrial cells and traced their metabolic fate by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS)/MS analysis.

Achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in dairy production will require >50% reduction in enteric methane (CH) emissions together with elimination of emissions from feed production, additional carbon sequestration, reduction in manure emissions, anaerobic digestion of manure, and decreased reliance on fossil fuel energy. Over past decades, improved production efficiency has reduced GHG intensity of milk production (i.e.

Pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins are induced by abiotic and biotic stresses and generally considered as part of the plant defense mechanism. However, it remains yet largely unclear if and how they are involved in virus infection. Our recent quantitative, comparative proteomic study identified three PR-5 family proteins that are significantly differentially accumulated in the plasmodesmata (PD)-enriched fraction isolated from Nicotiana benthamiana leaves infected by turnip mosaic virus (TuMV).

, the causal agent of white mould, is a necrotrophic fungal pathogen responsible for extensive crop loss. Current control options rely heavily on the application of chemical fungicides that are becoming less effective and may lead to the development of fungal resistance. In the current study, we used a foliar application of boron to protect (canola) from infection using whole-plant infection assays.

Suberin biosynthesis involves the coordinated regulation of both phenolic and aliphatic metabolisms. HXXXD/BAHD acyltransferases occupy a unique place in suberization, as they function to crosslink phenolic and aliphatic monomers during suberin assembly. To date, only one suberin-associated HXXXD/BAHD acyltransferase, StFHT, has been described in potatoes, whereas, in , at least two are implicated in suberin biosynthesis.

Pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) is a complex abiotic stress caused by multiple exogenous and endogenous variables that results in random but significant quality and yield loss at the terminal crop stage in more than half of the wheat-producing areas of the world. Systematic research over more than five decades suggests that addressing this challenge requires tools beyond the traditional genetic manipulation approach. Previous molecular studies indicate a possible role of epigenetics in the regulation of seed dormancy and PHS in crops, especially through RNA-directed DNA methylation (RdDM) pathways mediated by Argonaute (AGO) proteins.

Beans, vegetables, fruits, and mushrooms offer a delightful array of fragrances and an abundance of nutrients, including essential vitamins, minerals, protein rich in vital amino acids, and omega-3 fatty acids. However, they may also contain lectins, carbohydrate-binding proteins with potential health risks. While some lectins exhibit stability and resistance to digestion, posing threats to gastrointestinal integrity and immune function, others, such as those from butterfly peas and pink bauhinia, show immunomodulatory properties that could bolster immune responses.

Unlabelled: To prevent the spread of foodborne illnesses, the presence of pathogens in the food chain is monitored by government agencies and food producers. The culture-based methods currently employed are sensitive but time- and labor-intensive, leading to increasing interest in exploring culture-independent diagnostic tests (CIDTs) for pathogen detection. However, few studies quantify the relative sensitivity and reliability of these CIDTs compared to current approaches.

Ultrabright broadband near-infrared (NIR) phosphor-converted laser diode (pc-LD) as a light source is increasingly essential for improving the sensitivity and spatial resolution of intelligent NIR spectroscopy technologies. However, the performance of NIR pc-LD is greatly hindered by the low external quantum efficiency (EQE) and poor thermal resistance of phosphor materials. Herein, a highly stable phosphor-in-ceramic (PiC) film deposited on high thermal conductivity substrate, in which the NIR-emitting CaMgHfGeO:Cr phosphor is incorporated into a glass-crystallized CaGaGeO ceramic matrix, along with the formation of a new type PiC composite material with high efficiency, absorbance, and thermal conductivity, is designed and prepared.

In the attempts to mitigate uncertainties in the results of monolayer culture for the identification of cancer therapeutic targets and compounds, there has been a growing interest in using 3D cancer spheroid models, which include tumorospheres (TSs), tissue-derived tumor spheres (TDTSs), organotypic multicellular tumor spheroids (OMSs), and multicellular tumor spheroids (MCTSs). The MCTSs, either Mono-MCTSs or Hetero-MCTSs, with or without scaffold, in particular, offer numerous advantages over other spheroid models, including easy cultivation, high reproducibility, accessibility, high throughput, controllable size, well-rounded shape, simplicity of genetic manipulation, economical and availability of various biological methods for their development. In this review, we have attempted to discuss the role of MCTSs concerning various aspects of translational cancer research, such as drug response and penetration, cell-cell interaction, and invasion and metastasis.
