In our previous publication, we reported a framework to develop an undergraduate cancer research training program at Florida A&M University (FAMU) under the umbrella of the Florida-California Cancer Research, Education, and Engagement (CaRE) Health Equity Center activity by harnessing the resources available at FAMU, the University of Florida (UF), and the University of Southern California (USC) Cancer Centers. The implementation of the CaRE face-to-face training platform was dramatically affected by the COVID-19 pandemic during the summer of 2020 and 2021 training periods. However, a concerted effort was made to restructure the face-to-face training model into virtual and hybrid training methods to maintain the continuity of the program during the pandemic.

We assessed our institutional practice of individualized insulin dosing for patients with type 2 diabetes receiving preoperative carbohydrate loading (CHO-L) within an enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS®) protocol. Patients enrolled in an ERAS® protocol with concomitant type 2 diabetes received rapid acting insulin (Novolog®[insulin aspart]) prior to 50 g CHO-L on the day of surgery. Following CHO-L and the administration of insulin, no hypoglycemic episodes occurred with preoperative POC glucose values between 6.

The common field lampricide, 3-trifluoromethyl-4-nitrophenol (TFM), is used to treat streams and creeks infested with highly invasive and destructive sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) in the tributaries of the Great Lakes. Unfortunately, amphibian deaths have been reported following stream treatments with TFM. Larval amphibians (tadpoles) are more susceptible to TFM toxicity than adult amphibians.

The rapidly rising cancer burden and mortality rate in Africa are in contrast to the increase in cancer survivorship in Europe and North America. Genomic medicine has contributed to the rise in survival and has facilitated precision cancer control. However, there is a shortage of African representation in genomic databases, even for cancers that disproportionately affect Africans.

Background: Pregnancy represents a unique challenge for the maternal-fetal immune interface, requiring a balance between immunosuppression, which is essential for the maintenance of a semiallogeneic fetus, and proinflammatory host defense to protect the maternal-fetal interface from invading organisms. Adaptation to repeated inflammatory stimuli (endotoxin tolerance) may be critical in preventing inflammation-induced preterm birth caused by exaggerated maternal inflammatory responses to mild or moderate infections that are common during pregnancy. However, the exact mechanisms contributing to the maintenance of tolerance to repeated infections are not completely understood.

Lack of substantive research experiences and technical skills mentoring during undergraduate studies leaves many underrepresented minority (URM) students unprepared to apply to competitive graduate programs. As a part of our ongoing effort to increase the pipeline for the development and training of successful URM scientists in biomedical sciences with focus on reducing cancer health disparities, the Florida-California Cancer Research Education and Engagement (CaRE) Health Equity Center was launched in 2018. Funded through an NIH/NCI U54 grant mechanism, the CaRE Center is a triad partnership among Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), a minority-serving institution, University of Florida (UF), and University of Southern California (USC) Cancer Center.

Background: Pharmacokinetic (PK)-pharmacodynamic (PD) indices relate measures of drug exposure to antibacterial effect. Clinical PK-PD studies aim to correlate PK-PD indices with outcomes in patients. Optimization of dosing based on pre-clinical studies means that PK-PD relationships are difficult to establish; therefore studies need to be designed and reported carefully to validate pre-clinical findings.

We aimed to assess the current state of pathology services in Nigeria to guide strategies to ensure best practices and improve the quality of surgical specimen handling.
Methods: We developed structured pathology survey to assess tissue handling, sample processing, and immunohistochemistry (IHC) capabilities.

Background: Killing of bacterial pathogens by granulocytes is a saturable process, as previously demonstrated. There is virtually no quantitative information about how granulocytes interact with antimicrobial chemotherapy to kill bacterial cells.
Methods: We performed a dose-ranging study with the aminoglycoside plazomicin against Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC27853 in a granulocyte-replete murine pneumonia model.

It has been previously shown that mice subjected to an aerosol exposure to Yersinia pestis and treated with β-lactam antibiotics after a delay of 42 h died at an accelerated rate compared to controls. It was hypothesized that endotoxin release in antibiotic-treated mice accounted for the accelerated death rate in the mice exposed to aerosol Y. pestis.

The Massachusetts Mental Health Services Program for Youth (MHSPY) is a home-based clinical intervention that seeks to maintain youth with severe functional impairment in the community via delivery of integrated primary care, mental health, substance abuse, and social services. Using blended public agency funding, traditional and nontraditional services are provided within a private, not-for-profit, managed care organization. Individualized, comprehensive care plans are developed by an MHSPY care manager, who works intensively with the family and the Care Planning Team to identify needs and resources.
