Although ex situ conservation programs are increasingly valuable support tools for in situ conservation measures, success depends on these captive individuals to be genetically representative of the recipient population. The Eurasian stone-curlew () inhabit steppes that represent some of the most degraded and exploited habitats worldwide. A captive breeding program was implemented in Morocco as a pre-emptive effort for the conservation of the North African subspecies .

Stimuli-responsive nanocomposite gels combine the unique properties of hydrogels with those of nanoparticles, thus avoiding the suboptimal results of single components and creating versatile, multi-functional platforms for therapeutic and diagnostic applications. These hybrid materials are engineered to respond to various internal and external stimuli, such as temperature, pH, light, magnetic fields, and enzymatic activity, allowing precise control over drug release, tissue regeneration, and biosensing. Their responsiveness to environmental cues permits personalized medicine approaches, providing dynamic control over therapeutic interventions and real-time diagnostic capabilities.

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease resulting from the dysbiosis of periodontal bacteria and the host's immune response, leading to tissue degradation and sustained inflammation. Traditional treatments, such as mechanical debridement and antimicrobial agents, often fail to fully eradicate pathogenic bacteria, especially in deep periodontal pockets. Consequently, the need for novel therapeutic approaches has increased the interest in bioactive natural extracts, such as that of , known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties.

Phytochemical, Antioxidant Activity, and Toxicity of Wild Medicinal Plant of Extracts, and Approaches.

ACS Omega

February 2024

Laboratory of Engineering, Electrochemistry, Modelling and Environment, Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University, Faculty of Sciences Fès, Fez 30000, Morocco.

Morocco is known for its high plant biodiversity, but many plants are poorly valorized. For this reason, this study aims to valorize the methanolic and aqueous extracts of leaves by studying their antioxidant activity and toxicity. The extracts' antioxidant activity is assessed using the FRAP, DPPH, CAT, and ABTS methods.

The validity of omega 3 fatty acids (ω3 FAs), mainly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), as dietary supplements has been widely proved. It's well known in fact, that they protect against cardiovascular diseases, reduce the levels of triacylglycerides (TAGs) and cholesteryl esters (CEs) in blood, and have anti-inflammatory activity. For these reasons, in the last few years the production of dietary supplement containing ω3 has increased significantly.

The mucosal-dominant variant of pemphigus vulgaris (MPV) is an autoimmune disease characterized by oral mucosal blistering and circulating pathogenic IgG antibodies against desmoglein 3 (Dsg3), resulting in life-threatening bullae and erosion formation. Recently, microRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as promising players in the diagnosis and prognosis of several pathological states. For the first time, we have identified a different expression profile of miRNAs isolated from plasma-derived exosomes (P-EVs) of MPV patients positive for antibodies against Dsg3 (Dsg3-positive) compared to healthy controls.

Dry eye disease (DED) is a dynamic and complex disease that can cause significant damage to the ocular surface and discomfort, compromising the patient's quality of life. Phytochemicals such as resveratrol have received increasing attention due to their ability to interfere with multiple pathways related to these diseases. However, the low bioavailability and the poor therapeutic response of resveratrol hinder its clinical applications.

We report three novel deletions involving the Multispecies Conserved Sequences (MCS) R2, also known as the Major Regulative Element (MRE), in patients showing the α-thalassemia phenotype. The three new rearrangements showed peculiar positions of the breakpoints. 1) The (αα)ES is a telomeric 110 kb deletion ending inside the MCS-R3 element.

Diabetic wound infections (DWI) represent one of the most costly and disruptive complications in diabetic mellitus. The hyperglycemic state induces a persistent inflammation with immunological and biochemical impairments that promotes delayed wound healing processes and wound infection that often results in extended hospitalization and limb amputations. Currently, the available therapeutic options for the management of DWI are excruciating and expensive.

Objective: Dentin-pulp complex is object of interest in the regenerative endodontic field as well as the natural function of human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) that may differentiate into specific cells able to repair and/or regenerate both hard and soft dental structures. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the capacity of hDPSCs to differentiate in odontoblastic-like cells by evaluating the expression of specific odontogenic-related genes and to prove the ability of treatment with calcium-based materials such as calcium carbonate (CaCO3), calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂), and mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA).

Methods: hDPSCs were obtained and isolated from a third molar of a young patient.

The abnormal matrix remodeling process, as well as inflammation, angiogenesis, and tumor metastasis, are related to an increase in the synthesis and secretion of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), the zinc-dependent proteolytic endopeptidases. Recent studies have evidenced MMPs' role in osteoarthritis (OA) development, during which chondrocytes undergo hypertrophic differentiation and exhibit enhanced catabolism. The trait of OA is extracellular matrix (ECM) progressive degradation regulated by many factors, in which MMPs play an important role, which indicates them as potential therapeutic targets.

A straightforward, low-cost, and scalable solid-state mechanochemical protocol for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNP) based on the use of the highly reducing agri-food by-product pecan nutshell (PNS) is reported herein. Under optimized conditions (180 min, 800 rpm, PNS/AgNO ratio = 55/45 /), a complete reduction in silver ions was achieved, leading to a material containing ca. 36% / Ag (X-ray diffraction analysis).

In forest ecosystems, soil-plant interactions drive the physical, chemical, and biological soil properties and, through soil organic matter cycling, control the dynamics of nutrient cycles. Parent material also plays a fundamental role in determining soil's chemical properties and nutrient availability. In this study, eight long-time coppice-managed Holm oak forests under conversion to high forest, located under similar climatic conditions in Tuscany and Sardinia Regions (Italy), and grown on soils developed from three different lithologies (limestone, biotite granite, and granite with quartz veins) were evaluated.
