Animal Model Exp Med

January 2025

Urology and Nephrology Research Center, Research Institute of Urology and Nephrology, Shahid Labbafinejad Medical Center, Urology Department, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran.

This study developed an animal model with internal and external urethral sphincter insufficiency by bypassing the sphincter without major damage so that the animal under study can return to normal life after the study. There is a need for a reliable, applicable, and reproducible animal model for studying urinary incontinency disease due to incorrect sphincter function. Seven adult male dogs were used for this study.

Article Synopsis
  • Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL) can cause damage to blood vessels and kidney tissue, leading to impaired kidney function, and this study focuses on the biomarker NGAL associated with acute kidney injury.
  • The study involved 46 patients whose NGAL levels were measured before and after PNL, exploring how factors like type of kidney stone and procedure duration affected kidney function.
  • Findings indicate that significant kidney function impairment, particularly with staghorn stones, is linked to high initial NGAL levels, suggesting that NGAL testing could effectively assess kidney damage immediately following PNL.

Introduction: Today it is urgent to introduce into clinical practice more advanced methods of kidney stone treatment with high indicators of their effectiveness and safety while minimizing the risk of repeated interventions. The goal of effective treatment of kidney stones is to completely rid the patient of stones and complaints, to eliminate organ dysfunction, using minimally invasive treatment methods that reduce the patients hospital stay and the risk of complications. However, there are only few studies comparing the clinical efficacy and safety of modern methods of surgical treatment of kidney stones 2 to 3 cm in size.

The article presents a clinical case of perioperative non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction in a patient with primary metasynchronous cancer of the rectum, stomach and bladder, which developed during simultaneous surgical intervention in the volume of proximal gastrectomy and abdominoperineal extirpation of the rectum. Fluctuations in blood pressure and imbalance in the hemostasis system at the stages of anesthesia and surgery in a patient with severe systemic atherosclerosis caused the development of myocardial ischemia in the area of significant coronary stenosis. Emergency coronary angiography detected subtotal stenosis of the anterior descending artery; stenting of the affected area of the coronary artery was performed.

Anhui Medical University Research Institute of Urology / Key Laboratory of Anhui Province for Genitourinary Diseases / Department of Urology, the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University, Hefei, Anhui 230022, China.

Objective: To investigate the effect of inflammation-related genes on the prognosis of prostate cancer (PCa).

Methods: We downloaded PCa-related clinical data and mRNA sequencing data from the database Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and inflammation-related pathway gene sets from MsigDB. Using univariate regression and LASSO regression analyses, we screened inflammation-related genes for the construction of a prognostic risk model and evaluated the performance of the model in predicting the prognosis of PCa by Kaplan-Meier and ROC analyses.

Increasing of treatment efficiency in patients with neurogenic detrusor overactivity is an important medical and social problem. Its significance is determined not only by the high prevalence of neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunctions, but also by the high risk of complications, among which an impaired renal function takes the leading place. Botulinum toxin therapy is considered as a second-line treatment and is carried out in case of insufficient efficacy, unsatisfactory tolerability or the presence of contraindications to anticholinergic therapy.

The work is devoted to the description of percutaneous nephrolithotomy in a patient who previously underwent liver transplantation. In case of immunodeficiency of any etiology, one-stage non-severe kidney injury is less dangerous compared to infectious and inflammatory complications, which naturally have more severe course compared to in those with intact immune system. Based on these considerations, the patient underwent percutaneous nephrolithotomy, which allowed to remove the stone of 2.

At the beginning of this century, there was a paradigm shift in understanding the histogenesis of high-grade serous carcinomas. The theory of the origin of these tumors from the ovarian surface epithelium was replaced by the concept of their origin from the secretory epithelium of the fallopian tubes. In recent years, researchers have put forward the hypothesis of the "escape" of the precursor of high-grade serous carcinomas.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is a most common malignancy in males. It has a greater heterogeneity than other cancers, which poses a real challenge to the clinical diagnosis, classification and prognostic monitoring. At present, high-, medium- and low-risk PCa patients are classified mainly by Gleason scores and the PSA level, which, however, fail to reveal the diverse molecular heterogeneity and precisely distinguish the molecular subtypes of PCa.

Shemyakin-Ovchinnikov Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, 16/10 Miklukho-Maklaya str., Moscow, 117997, Russia; Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology, HSE University, 33 b.4 Profsoyuznaya str., Moscow, 117418, Russia.

Viscumin, a lectin used in anti-cancer therapy, was originally considered as βGal recognizing protein; later, an ability to bind 6'-sialyl N-acetyllactosamine (6'SLN) terminated gangliosides was found. Here we probed viscumin with a printed glycan array (PGA) containing a large number of mammalian sulfated glycans, and found a strong binding to glycans with 6-O-SuGal moiety as lactose, N-acetyllactosamine (LN), di-N-acetyllactosamine (LacdiNAc), and even 6-O-SuGalNAcα (but not SiaTn). Also, the ability to bind some of αGal terminated glycans, including Galα1-3Galβ1-4GlcNAc, was observed.

[Advances in the genetic diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer].

Zhonghua Nan Ke Xue

August 2022

Department of Urology / Research Institute of Urology, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, Sichuan 610041, China.

As the incidence of prostate cancer (PCa) increases with the aging of men, more and more attention is paid to the prevention and treatment of the pregnancy. In addition to widely used PSA test, MRI and other diagnostic strategies, PCa-related gene screening, with the development of such new technologies as second-generation gene sequencing, is more and more applied in the detection of PCa. Different types of tumor-related genes have different effects on the development and progression of PCa as well as different values in the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of the malignancy.
