Insights into the Effect of Spontaneous Fluid Imbibition on the Formation Mechanism of Fracture Networks in Brittle Shale: An Experimental Investigation.

In this paper, the high-temperature/high-pressure triaxial testing system of rocks is used to study the effect of spontaneous fluid imbibition on the formation mechanism of fracture networks, by means of acoustic emission (AE) monitoring and ultrasound measurement. After the water-shale interaction, the rock mechanical parameters such as rock strength, elastic modulus, cohesion, and internal friction angle of shales significantly decrease as the imbibition time increases, indicating that the fluid has a strong influence on the mechanical properties of brittle shales. The stress-strain curves of the wet and dry shales and their AE characteristics are quite different: (i) the stress-strain curve of wet shale samples shows multiple fluctuations before macroscopic failure, and its cumulative AE number curve presents a step-like jump many times that corresponds to the local microcracking; (ii) the stress-strain curve of dry shale samples mainly shows the characteristic of linear elastic deformation during early loading, which has less AE event number, and the step-like jump is not observed in all the AE curves.

Nanophotonics based on resonant nanostructures and metasurfaces made of halide perovskites have become a prospective direction for efficient light manipulation at the subwavelength scale in advanced photonic designs. One of the main challenges in this field is the lack of large-scale low-cost technique for subwavelength perovskite structures fabrication preserving highly efficient luminescence. Here, unique properties of halide perovskites addressed to their extremely low thermal conductivity (lower than that of silica glass) and high defect tolerance to apply projection femtosecond laser lithography for nanofabrication with precise spatial control in all three dimensions preserving the material luminescence efficiency are employed.

Latent infection of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is associated with a poor prognosis in patients with B cell malignancy. We examined whether dasatinib, a multi kinase inhibitor, which is broadly used for chronic myeloid leukemia and Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia is effective on EBV-positive B cell malignancies, using lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCLs) in vitro and in vivo. As a result, in vitro experiments showed that dasatinib induced cell death of the EBV-LCLs which was not accompanied with a lytic reactivation of EBVs.

Two novel pyrazole based thiourea palladium(II) complexes, [PdCl(PPh)(CHNOS-pz)] (1) and [PdCl(PPh)(CHNOS-pz)] (2) [pz = pyrazole (CHN)] have been obtained unexpectedly from chromone thiosemicarbazones (L1 and L2) and [PdCl(PPh)]. We report an easy-to-implement device for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based detection of various analytes dissolved in water droplets at trace concentrations. The device combines an analyte-enrichment system and SERS-active sensor site, both produced via inexpensive and high-performance direct femtosecond (fs)-laser printing. Fabricated on a surface of water-repellent polytetrafluoroethylene substrate as an arrangement of micropillars, the analyte-enrichment system supports evaporating water droplet in the Cassie-Baxter superhydrophobic state, thus ensuring delivery of the dissolved analyte molecules towards the hydrophilic SERS-active site.

In this study, a new, simple, and novel oblique electrostatic inkjet (OEI) technique is developed to deposit a titanium oxide (TiO) compact layer (CL) on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate without the need for a vacuum environment for the first time. The TiO is used as electron transport layers (ETL) in planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs). This bottom-up OEI technique enables the control of the surface morphology and thickness of the TiO CL by simply manipulating the coating time.

This review article gathers the available information on the use of embryo-tests as high-throughput tools for toxicity screening, hazard assessment and prioritization of new and existing chemical compounds. The approach is contextualized considering the new legal trends for animal experimentation, fostering the 3R policy, with reduction of experimental animals, addressing the potential of embryo-tests as high-throughput toxicity screening and prioritizing tools. Further, the current test guidelines, such as the ones provided by OECD and EPA, focus mainly in a limited number of animal lineages, particularly vertebrates and arthropods.

This study describes a sensitive reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive lecithin (LEC) incorporated iron oxide nanoparticle (FeO NP) system with potent anti-inflammatory properties and even more so when the antioxidant drug curcumin (CUR) is encapsulated in the PLGA hybrid magnetic microsphere system (FeO@LEC-CUR-PLGA-MMS). The delivery system is responsive to ROS including an HO environment to release the payload (CUR) drug. Greater cytotoxicity properties were observed in the presence of FeO@LEC-CUR-PLGA-MMS against A549 and HeLa S3 cells with IC values after 24 h of 10 and 12 μg/mL and 10 and 20 μg/mL, respectively.

In this paper, we report a new, simple method for the synthesis of CdS and ZnS nanoparticles (NPs) prepared in a basic aqueous medium using metal xanthate as the sulfur source. The structure, morphology, size distribution, optical band gap, and photocatalytic properties of the newly obtained nanomaterials were investigated by UV-Vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. We demonstrate a multi-purpose plasmonic sensor based on a nanovoid array fabricated via inexpensive and highly-reproducible direct femtosecond laser patterning of thin glass-supported Au films. The proposed nanovoid array exhibits near-IR surface plasmon (SP) resonances, which can be excited under normal incidence and optimised for specific applications by tailoring the array periodicity, as well as the nanovoid geometric shape. The fabricated SP sensor offers competitive sensitivity of ≈ 1600 nm/RIU at a figure of merit of 12 in bulk refractive index tests, as well as allows for identification of gases and ultra-thin analyte layers, making the sensor particularly useful for common bioassay experiments.

Engineering surface structure of catalysts is an efficient way towards high catalytic performance. Here, we report on the synthesis of regular iridium nanospheres (Ir NSs), with abundant atomic steps prepared by a laser ablation technique. Atomic steps, consisting of one-atom level covering the surface of such Ir NSs, were observed by aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) The prepared Ir NSs exhibited remarkably enhanced activity both for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic medium.
