We studied the effect of constant illumination on the effects of administration of arginine vasopressin (AVP), one of the most important regulators of the key adaptive hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis under basal conditions and during stress, as well as on the circadian rhythm of activity of HPA axis and the pineal gland in laboratory primates. In young adult female rhesus monkeys exposed to constant illumination for 7 weeks, the rise in the concentration of ACTH and cortisol in response to administration of AVP was markedly reduced in comparison with both the basal period and with the control group of animals. In addition, a destructive effect of constant lighting on circadian rhythm of cortisol secretion was observed in the absence of significant circadian changes in melatonin secretion.

We studied the relationship between body weight and behavioral characteristics (anxiety, social status, aggressive and exploratory behavior, and sociability) of socially housed adult male cynomolgus macaques. Of the studied parameters, only anxiety showed pronounced relationship with body weight. It is noteworthy that state anxiety demonstrated stronger relationship with body weight than trait anxiety.

In individuals with low behavioral scores of aggression, sociability, and mobility, the levels of learning, training, and skill retention were significantly higher than in individuals with higher behavioral scores. At the same time, individuals with a high level of anxiety were characterized with enhanced level of learning, training and skill stability.

The genotoxic and antigenotoxic potential of BP-C2, a novel lignin-derived polyphenolic composition with ammonium molybdate, was investigated as a radioprotector/radiomitigator for civil applications and as a medical countermeasure for radiation emergencies. Using the alkaline comet assay and methyl methanesulfonate (MMS, 40 mg/kg) as the DNA-damaging agent, these effects of BP-C2 on liver, bone marrow cells and blood leukocytes in rats were studied. The DNA damage was estimated by the DNA content in the comet tail (TDNA, %) 1, 6 and 18 h post exposure to MMS.

With aging, incidence of severe stress-related diseases increases. However, mechanisms, underlying individual vulnerability to stress and age-related diseases are not clear. The goal of this review is to analyze finding from the recent literature on age-related characteristics of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis associated with stress reactivity in animals that show behavioral signs of anxiety and depression under mild stress, and in human patients with anxiety disorders and depression with emphasis on the impact of the circadian rhythm and the negative feedback mechanisms involved in the stress response.

Baboons showed higher levels of experimental activity. An increasing number of studies are devoted to the study of the relationship of mental disorders, such as depression and anxiety, with the risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus. The effects of environmental factors (flavors, different ethanol concentration, alcoholic deprivation, and food reinforcement) on the formation of alcohol motivation was studied in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta, n=6). Motivation for alcohol intake was induced in two stages: initiation (sessions 1-160) and formation of motivation (sessions 161-516). Monkeys preferred multifruit flavor and 4% ethanol solution, while ethanol deprivation did not stimulate alcohol consumption.

We report a case of hepatitis E virus genotype 4 infection in captive non-human primates (cynomolgus monkeys) imported from Vietnam. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that HEV infection was not the result of spillover from single source of infection, but rather the persistent circulation of HEV-4 among cynomolgus monkeys or multiple infections by related strains from a human or swine reservoir.

The study of the mechanisms underlying the increased vulnerability of the individual to stressful environmental factors in different age periods is of great relevance for prevention and effective treatment of stress-dependent diseases that are widespread in the population of aging individuals. The purpose of our study was to investigate the individual and age-related features of the glucocorticoid negative feedback in regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, the key adaptive neuroendocrine system, in experiments with physically healthy young and old female rhesus monkeys with administration of mineracorticoid receptor (fludrocortisone) and glucocorticoid receptor (dexamethasone) agonists. The life span of monkeys injected with the drug and receiving after 24 h mesenchymal stem cell transplantation varied from 96 to 120 days in comparison with 50-74 days in animals receiving stem cells before doxorubicin. Intravenous administration of the drug caused intoxication manifested in in an abrupt body weight loss, baldness, vomiting, and exicosis. Intoxication in monkeys determined by the damaging effects of doxorubicin on organs and tissues is also characterized by significant changes in the blood: leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, monocytopenia, lymphocytosis, and a sharp drop of CD20+ B cell content.
