Intra-abdominal infection (IAI) is a deadly condition in which the outcome is associated with urgent diagnosis, assessment and management, including fluid resuscitation, antibiotic administration while obtaining further laboratory results, attaining precise measurements of hemodynamic status, and pursuing source control. This last item makes abdominal sepsis a unique treatment challenge. Delayed or inadequate source control is an independent predictor of poor outcomes and recognizing source control failure is often difficult or impossible.

Glucagon-like peptide-2 (GLP-2), a key factor in intestinal rehabilitation therapy of short bowel syndrome (SBS), may require cell-to-cell communication to exert its biological functions. However, understanding of the mechanism remains elusive. Here, we report participation of exosomal miR-125a/b in GLP-2 mediated intestinal epithelial cells-myofibroblasts cross-talk in intestinal microenvironment.

Colorectal surgery patients have severe intestinal flora disorders and antibiotic resistant bacteria due to the disease itself and preoperative treatment, as well as the influence of dietary structure and environmental factors. Perioperative anesthesia and operative stress can cause gastrointestinal motility disorders. In addition, the widespread use of prophylactic broad-spectrum antibiotics and antiacids aggravate intestinal flora disorders and induces severe postoperative infectious diarrhea, such as pseudomembranous enteritis and fatal enteritis.

Hemostasis, wound closure and prevention of infection are critical to wound healing after an injury. Skin adhesives have been used to seal incisions, thus aiding primary wound healing, as well as creating a barrier to microbes. We constructed a skin adhesive with antibacterial and hemostatic activities (AHAs) for wound management.

Intravasation, vascular dissemination and metastasis of malignant tumor cells require their passage through the vascular wall which is commonly composed of pericytes and endothelial cells. We currently decided to investigate the relative contribution of these cell types to B16F10 melanoma metastasis in mice using an experimental model of host Shb gene (Src homology 2 domain-containing protein B) inactivation. Conditional inactivation of Shb in endothelial cells using Cdh5-CreERt2 resulted in decreased tumor growth, reduced vascular leakage, increased hypoxia and no effect on pericyte coverage and lung metastasis.

As an emerging technology, intestinal organoids are promising new tools for basic and translational research in gastroenterology. Currently, culture of intestinal organoids relies mostly on a type of tumor-derived scaffolds, namely Matrigel, which may pose tumorigenic risks to organoid implantation. Apart from the traditional detection methods, such as tissue slicing and fluorescence staining, the monitoring of intestinal organoids requires real-time biosensors that can adapt to their three-dimensional dynamic growth patterns.

Biomimetic enzyme barrier (BEB) encapsulated microcapsules with alginate shells were fabricated with a microfluidic electrospray approach for preventing intestine-derived LPS induced diseases. As the alginate shells could protect the contents in gastric juice and release them in the intestine, the inner BEB could form a consecutive immune barrier on the surface of the intestine during the release. Through combining BEB with alkaline phosphatase, the immune barrier could degrade and prevent the permeation of lipopolysaccharide, which enhanced the intestinal barrier function.
