In clinical practice, the diagnosis of ulcerative colitis (UC) mainly relies on a comprehensive analysis of a series of signs and symptoms of patients. The current biomarkers for diagnosis of UC and prognostic prediction of anti-TNF-α therapy are inaccurate. The present study aimed to perform an integrative analysis of gene expression profiles in patients with UC.

The redox potential plays a critical role in sustaining the stability of gut microbiota. This study measured the fecal redox potential in healthy and diarrheal pigs using direct and dilution methods and investigated their correlation with microbiota. The results showed that the fluctuations in the redox potential of healthy pig feces were consistent using two different methods and the two methods are equivalent based on an equivalence test.

Sepsis is a dysregulated response to infection that can result in life-threatening organ failure, and septic cardiomyopathy is a serious complication involving ferroptosis. Olaparib, a classic targeted drug used in oncology, has demonstrated potential protective effects against sepsis. However, the exact mechanisms underlying its action remain to be elucidated.

The clinical treatment of enterocutaneous fistula is challenging and causes significant patient discomfort. Fibrin gel can be used to seal tubular enterocutaneous fistulas, but it has low strength and poor digestion resistance. Based on in situ bioprinting and the anti-digestive properties of xanthan gum (XG), we used carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) and xanthan gum modified by grafted glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and aldehyde (GCX) as the ink to print a double network hydrogel that exhibited high strength and an excellent anti-digestive performance.

Surgeons in their daily practice are at the forefront in preventing and managing infections. However, among surgeons, appropriate measures of infection prevention and management are often disregarded. The lack of awareness of infection and prevention measures has marginalized surgeons from this battle.

Bile acids are altered and associated with prognosis in patients with acute pancreatitis (AP). Here, we conduct targeted metabolomic analyses to detect bile acids changes in patients during the acute (n = 326) and the recovery (n = 133) phases of AP, as well as in healthy controls (n = 60). Chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) decreases in the acute phase, increases in the recovery phase, and is associated with pancreatic necrosis.

High glucose-induced vascular endothelial injury is a major pathological factor involved in non-healing diabetic wounds. To interrupt this pathological process, we design an all-peptide printable hydrogel platform based on highly efficient and precise one-step click chemistry of thiolated γ-polyglutamic acid, glycidyl methacrylate-conjugated γ-polyglutamic acid, and thiolated arginine-glycine-aspartate sequences. Vascular endothelial growth factor 165-overexpressed human umbilical vein endothelial cells are printed using this platform, hence fabricating a living material with high cell viability and precise cell spatial distribution control.

Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (hvKP) is a highly lethal opportunistic pathogen that elicits more severe inflammatory responses compared to classical Klebsiella pneumoniae (cKP). In this study, we investigated the interaction between hvKP infection and the anti-inflammatory immune response gene 1 (IRG1)-itaconate axis. Firstly, we demonstrated the activation of the IRG1-itaconate axis induced by hvKP, with a dependency on SYK signaling rather than STING.

Background: Breast cancer (BC) is a prevalent malignancy affecting women, characterized by a substantial occurrence rate. Squalene epoxidase (SQLE) is a crucial regulator of ferroptosis and has been associated with promoting cell growth and invasion in different types of human cancers. This study aimed to investigate the functional significance of SQLE in BC and elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms involved.

Hypoxic-ischemic injury is a common pathological dysfunction in clinical settings. Mitochondria are sensitive organelles that are readily damaged following ischemia and hypoxia. Dynamin-related protein 1 (Drp1) regulates mitochondrial quality and cellular functions via its oligomeric changes and multiple modifications, which plays a role in mediating the induction of multiple organ damage during hypoxic-ischemic injury.

Gasdermins (GSDMs) serve as pivotal executors of pyroptosis and play crucial roles in host defence, cytokine secretion, innate immunity, and cancer. However, excessive or inappropriate GSDMs activation is invariably accompanied by exaggerated inflammation and results in tissue damage. In contrast, deficient or impaired activation of GSDMs often fails to promptly eliminate pathogens, leading to the increasing severity of infections.

The protection of open abdomen (OA) wound is a significant subject in the field of trauma surgery. The key technical challenge in the early stage of OA wound management involves promoting granulation tissue filling between intestinal segments, reducing intestinal wall abrasion, and preventing the development of enteroatmospheric fistulas (EAF). Hydrogels, characterized by their high water content and exceptional biocompatibility, serve as extracellular matrix-mimicking materials, and are extensively employed in various medical and healthcare applications.

Open abdomen therapy is an effective method for the treatment of severe intra-abdominal infections, abdominal hypertension and other critical abdominal diseases. Bases on systematic reviews of indications, classification and staging of wounds, principles and approaches of open abdomen therapy, abdominal closure measures, and management of enteroatmospheric fistula, the Chinese expert consensus on open abdomen therapy provides 12 recommendations with evidence and specific explanations. This consensus is the first systematic work in China to elaborate on open abdomen therapy, helping clinicians to standardize this technique and improve the treatment outcomes of critical abdominal diseases.

Severe intra-abdominal infection is complicated with sepsis or septic shock and could also be named as intra-abdominal sepsis. Surgical rescue is an effective intervention for severe intra-abdominal infection, which can be caused by surgery, trauma or acute abdomen. Institutional factors associated with failure of surgical rescue include hospital volume, technology, surgeons and nurses.
