These facts determine the relevance of studying the factors of severe course and unfavorable outcome in immuno-inflammatory rheumatic diseases (IIRD) patients treated with bDMARDs in order to develop tactics for managing this category of patients in a pandemic.
Aim: To evaluate the influence of clinical and demographic factors on the risk of development, severity of the course and clinical outcomes of a new coronavirus infection in patients suffering from IIRD and receiving therapy with genetically engineered biological drugs.

We studied the effect of preconditioning of human bone marrow mononuclear cells with erythropoietin on the immunophenotype of immunocompetent cells and paracrine activity of mouse splenocytes. The expression of erythropoietin receptors on immunocompetent human bone marrow cells was shown to change after a short-term (60 min) exposure to erythropoietin. The number of T helpers carrying erythropoietin receptors decreased and the number of T suppressors, B lymphocytes, and monocytes carrying erythropoietin receptors increased.

We performed an immunohistochemical study of MT melatonin receptor expression in the liver of C57BL/6 mice with modeled light-induced functional pinealectomy and after melatonin administration by the indirect avidin-biotin peroxidase ABC method. The animals were kept for 14 days under constant lighting. Intragastric administration of melatonin in physiological doses (1 mg/kg body weight for 14 days) to mice with light-induced functional pinealectomy resulted in a 2-fold increase in the relative expression area of MT receptors in liver cells in comparison with that in animals kept under standard lighting conditions, 24-h lighting for 14 days, or 24-h lighting receiving placebo (intragastric administration of 200 ml distilled water).

Immunohistochemical and ultrastructural analysis revealed signs of structural alterations in neurons and autophagy in all layers of the human retina at the end-stage glaucoma. The most pronounced destructive changes associated with swelling and destruction of mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, and Golgi apparatus, as well as structural signs of impaired synaptic activity and apoptosis were noted in ganglion, bipolar, and amacrine neurons. In the structure of photoreceptor cells, alone with destructive processes associated with structural alterations of rods and cones in the outer membrane discs, as well as swelling of organelles, we observed processes aimed at the maintenance of cell homeostasis.

Induced inflammation of reproductive organs in female Wistar rats was associated with an increase in the diameters of arteries and veins and number of blood vessels in the ovary medulla in combination with an increase in the number of lymphatic vessels; these changes were accompanied by reduction of the ovarian reserve and number of yellow bodies. Intravenous and submucosal injection of bone marrow multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells (BМ-ММSC) led to further increase in the diameters of arteries and veins and number of primordial and primary follicles. The injection of conditioned medium of BМ-ММSC cultures generally produced the same effects, which could demonstrate the secretory mechanisms of their influence on local angiogenesis and folliculogenesis.

The expression of microRNA (miR-21, miR-221, miR-27a, and miR-429) was studied normal and tumor breast tissues of female Wistar rats before and after photodynamic therapy. In breast cancer, the levels of oncogenic microRNA (miR-21, miR-221, and miR-27a) were increased, while the level of tumor-suppressing miR-429 was reduced in comparison with the intact group. After photodynamic therapy, suppression of the expression levels of oncogenic microRNAs (miR-21, miR-221, and miR-27a) was noted.

Background: Osteoporosis and type 2 diabetes (T2D) have been recognized as a widespread comorbidity leading to excess mortality and an enormous healthcare burden. In T2D, bone mineral density (BMD) may underestimate the risk of low-energy fractures as bone quality is reduced. It was hypothesized that a decrease in the trabecular bone score (TBS), a parameter assessing bone microarchitecture, may be an early marker of impaired bone health in women with T2D.

In ankylosing spondylitis, the pathological metabolism of the bone tissue is regulated by various proteins; of these, Dkk-1 protein, an antagonist of the Wnt-signaling pathway, is of particular interest. We compared the methods of Dkk-1 detection in the blood serum of patients with ankylosing spondylitis (conventional ELISA and aptamer/antibody assay) and analyzed the relationship between Dkk-1 level and structural progression of ankylosing spondylitis and secondary osteoporosis. Dkk-1 levels in patients were significantly increased and depended on the stage of the disease, but not on the presence/absence of osteoporosis.
