Protein deficiency in the diet during pregnancy and lactation has a serious impact on the offspring by programming a predisposition to such serious diseases as hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus. In our study, we examined liver ultrastructure of rat pups at ages 2, 21, and 40 days with maternal protein deficiency. Body weight of the pups progressively lagged behind the control throughout the experiment, and the timing of eye opening indicated a slowdown of development.

Chronic immunoinflammatory rheumatic diseases, such as axial spondyloarthritis (AxSpA), are accompanied by a dysregulation of bone remodeling. Among potential biomarkers of bone metabolism, the Wnt pathway antagonist, Dickkopf-1 (DKK-1), is of particular interest because of its potential to reflect a shift towards joint ossification or osteoporosis, but its diagnostic value needs validation. There is still a lack of stable and efficient methods of measuring serum DKK-1 levels suitable for longitude studies.

Background: In this study, we examined the effectiveness of transfer learning in improving automatic segmentation of brain metastases on magnetic resonance imaging scans, with potential applications in preventive exams and remote diagnostics.

Methods: We trained three deep learning models on a public dataset from the ASNR-MICCAI Brain Metastasis Challenge 2024, fine-tuned them on a small private dataset, and compared their performance to models trained from scratch.

Results: Results showed that models using transfer learning performed better than scratch-trained models, though the improvement was not statistically substantial.

The effect of a new antibiotic peptomide A-70 on changes in the mesenterial lymph nodes caused by experimental peritonitis was studied. Differences in the morphological changes in rat lymph nodes in peritonitis and against the background of antibiotic therapy were revealed. Lymph nodes responded to peritoneal inflammation by reducing the area of cortical structures and expansion of the sinus system, which indicates a decrease in drainage-detoxification and immune function and determines unfavorable outcome of peritonitis.

We studied cytotoxicity and accumulation of boron and lithium by cultured human fibroblasts and human and mouse skin melanoma cell cultures. The cytotoxicity of boron and lithium drugs was assessed by MTT tests in the boron and lithium concentration range of 10-640 μg/ml. Cell viability was significantly reduced after incubation with boron and lithium at concentrations >160 μg/ml.

The structural organization of the extracellular matrix of rectal adenocarcinoma of different differentiation degrees without and after neoadjuvant radiation therapy was studied on postoperative material using immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. The differences in the expression of types I and III collagens, as well as in the ultrastructural organization of the extracellular matrix of rectal adenocarcinoma of different differentiation degrees without and after neoadjuvant radiation therapy were revealed. We observed high expression of collagen I and wide channels in the collagen matrix in the central areas of the well differentiated adenocarcinomas without neoadjuvant radiation therapy and in poorly differentiated adenocarcinomas after neoadjuvant radiation therapy, which can be associated with metastasis and poor prognosis for the patients.

In female Wistar rats, we studied the relationship between the levels of miR-21, miR-221, miR-222, and miR-429 in the lymph and morphometric parameters of the thymus after surgical treatment of breast cancer, chemotherapy, and administration of fragmented human DNA. The levels of pro-oncogenic miR-221 and miR-222 in the lymph decreased after surgical treatment and chemotherapy in comparison with the pathological controls. Positive correlations of miR-221 and miR-429 with small lymphocytes in the cortical substance and miR-21 and miR-429 with small lymphocytes of the medullary substance of the thymus were revealed.

In female Wistar rats with breast cancer, quantitative changes of pro-oncogenic miRNAs (miR-21, -27a, and -221) and tumor-suppressive miR-429 in the mesenteric lymph node were assessed after photodynamic therapy for breast cancer and after photodynamic therapy followed surgical treatment. The level of pro-oncogenic miR-221 in the mesenteric lymph node decreased, and the level of pro-oncogenic miR-21 increased after photodynamic therapy for breast cancer followed by surgical treatment in comparison with the corresponding parameters after photodynamic therapy alone. The content of tumor-suppressive miR-429 remained reduced, as in the group of animals receiving photodynamic therapy alone.

The escalating threat of multidrug-resistant pathogens necessitates innovative approaches to combat infectious diseases. In this study, we examined peptides R23F*, V31K*, and R44K*, which were engineered to include an amyloidogenic fragment sourced from the S1 protein of , along with one or two cell-penetrating peptide (CPP) components. We assessed the antimicrobial efficacy of these peptides in a liquid medium against various strains of both Gram-positive bacteria, including (209P and 129B strains), MRSA (SA 180 and ATCC 43300 strains), and (strain IP 5832), and Gram-negative bacteria such as (ATCC 28753 and 2943 strains) and (MG1655 and K12 strains).

Molecular genetic analysis of tumor tissues is the most important step towards understanding the mechanisms of cancer development; it is also necessary for the choice of targeted therapy. The Hi-C (high-throughput chromatin conformation capture) technology can be used to detect various types of genomic variants, including balanced chromosomal rearrangements, such as inversions and translocations. Abnormalities of the cytoskeleton and the slit diaphragm of podocytes have been attributed to diabetic nephropathy. In this study, we assessed urinary excretion of alpha-actinin-4 (ACTN-4), a cytoskeleton protein and a component of the slit diaphragm, and tight junction protein 1 (TJP-1, or ZO-1), a peripheral membrane protein that forms molecular complexes with actin filaments, in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and albuminuric or non-albuminuric chronic kidney disease (CKD). The expression of marker proteins of acute kidney injury after administration of high doses of lithium carbonate was assessed to evaluate the possibility of lithium use in neutron capture therapy. In mice with implanted skin melanoma B16, the expression of Kim1 (kidney injury molecule 1) and NGAL (neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin) proteins in the kidneys was evaluated immunohistochemically 15, 30, 90, 180 min, and 7 days after peroral administration of lithium carbonate at single doses of 300 and 400 mg/kg. An increase in the expression of the studied proteins was found in 30 and 90 min after administration of 400 mg/kg lithium carbonate, however, 7 days after the drug administration, the expression returned to the level observed in the control group.
