Research progress on pathogenesis and treatment of febrile seizures.

Life Sci

February 2025

Research Institute of Chinese Medical Clinical Foundation and Immunology, College of Basic Medical Science & Wenzhou TCM Hospital of Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, Zhejiang, China. Electronic address:

Febrile seizures (FSs) are the most common pediatric neurological disorder, affecting approximately 5 % of children aged 6 months to 5 years. While most FSs are self-limiting and benign, about 20-30 % present as complex FSs (CFSs), which pose a risk of acute brain injury and the development of temporal lobe epilepsy. Various factors, including age, geographical distribution, and type of infection influence the occurrence of FS.

High Humidity Alters Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cells in Spleen Tissue: Insights into Rheumatoid Arthritis Progression.

J Inflamm Res

November 2024

Research Institute of Chinese Medical Clinical Foundation and Immunology, School of Basic Medical Science, Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, Hangzhou, 310053, People's Republic of China.

Article Synopsis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease that leads to joint inflammation and bone damage, and high humidity conditions may worsen its symptoms, though the reasons are not fully understood.
  • In a study using a mouse model, researchers investigated how elevated humidity (80%) affects splenic cell types and arthritis severity compared to normal humidity (50%).
  • Results showed that high humidity led to increased arthritis symptoms, elevated levels of inflammatory markers, and changes in immune cells (MDSCs) and oxidative stress indicators, suggesting humidity might play a significant role in aggravating RA progression.

Effect of hydroxychloroquine on pregnancy outcome in patients with SLE: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Lupus Sci Med

October 2024

Key Laboratory of Chinese medicine rheumatology of Zhejiang Province, Research Institute of Chinese Medical Clinical Foundation and Immunology, College of Basic Medical Science, Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China

Objective: Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) is an antimalarial drug employed in the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Prior studies reported inconsistent results regarding the association between HCQ use during pregnancy and adverse pregnancy outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of HCQ on pregnancy-related outcomes in women with SLE.

Imbalance of Th17 cells, Treg cells and associated cytokines in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus: a meta-analysis.

Front Immunol

August 2024

Key Laboratory of Chinese Medicine Rheumatology of Zhejiang Province, Research Institute of Chinese Medical Clinical Foundation and Immunology, College of Basic Medical Science, Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, Hangzhou, China.

Objective: This article aims to investigate the changes of T helper 17 (Th17) cells, regulatory T (Treg) cells and their associated cytokines in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Methods: Multiple databases were investigated to identify articles that explored Th17 cells, Treg cells and relevant cytokines in SLE patients. A random effects model was used for calculating pooled standardized mean differences.

November 2024

College of Basic Medical Science, Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, Hangzhou, China; Key Laboratory of Chinese medicine rheumatology of Zhejiang Province, Research Institute of Chinese Medical Clinical Foundation and Immunology, Hangzhou, China. Electronic address:

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Qinghao-Biejia herb pair (QB) is the core herb pair of "Jieduquyuziyin prescription" and is one of the commonly used herb pairs for the clinical treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Previous studies have shown that QB reduces the expression of inflammatory cytokines like IL-6 and TNF-α in the serum and kidney of MRL/lpr mice. Additionally, it inhibits the expression of TLR4 and MyD88 in the kidney and aorta and reduces the deposition of renal complement C3 and aortic plaque after treatment.

Association between Unsaturated Fatty Acid-Type Diet and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: A Systematic Review with Meta-Analyses.

Nutrients

June 2024

Key Laboratory of Chinese Medicine Rheumatology of Zhejiang Province, Research Institute of Chinese Medical Clinical Foundation and Immunology, College of Basic Medical Science, Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, Hangzhou 310053, China.

Background: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex autoimmune disorder that affects multiple organ systems, with a higher prevalence among women in their reproductive years. The disease's multifactorial etiology involves genetic, environmental, and hormonal components. Recent studies have highlighted the potential impact of dietary factors, particularly unsaturated fatty acids, on the modulation of SLE due to their anti-inflammatory properties.

Selenium deficiency induces irritable bowel syndrome: Analysis of UK Biobank data and experimental studies in mice.

Ecotoxicol Environ Saf

August 2024

Department of Epidemiology, School of Public Health, Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, Hangzhou 310053, China. Electronic address:

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients exhibit significantly lower levels of serum selenium (Se) compared to healthy controls. This study integrates a prospective cohort analysis and animal experiments to investigate Se deficiency as a potential risk factor for IBS. Using data from the UK Biobank, a longitudinal analysis was conducted to explore the associations between dietary Se intake and the risk of incident IBS.

Ectopic CD4 T cells in choroid plexus mediate neuropsychiatric lupus symptoms in mice via interferon-γ induced microglia activation.

J Autoimmun

May 2024

Research Institute of Chinese Medical Clinical Foundation and Immunology, College of Basic Medical Science & Wenzhou TCM Hospital Affiliated to Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, Zhejiang, China. Electronic address:

Neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus (NPSLE) is a disabling and potentially life-threatening complication of SLE. This study aims to investigate whether ectopic CD4 T cells in the choroid plexus mediate NPSLE in mice. Intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection of anti-CD4 antibody effectively depleted CP-resident CD4 T cells and alleviated NPSLE-like symptoms in MRL/lpr mice.

Neddylation is a novel therapeutic target for lupus by regulating double negative T cell homeostasis.

Signal Transduct Target Ther

January 2024

Key Laboratory of Chinese medicine rheumatology of Zhejiang Province, Research Institute of Chinese Medical Clinical Foundation and Immunology, College of Basic Medical Science, Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, Hangzhou, 310053, China.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), a severe autoimmune disorder, is characterized by systemic inflammatory response, autoantibody accumulation and damage to organs. The dysregulation of double-negative (DN) T cells is considered as a crucial commander during SLE. Neddylation, a significant type of protein post-translational modification (PTM), has been well-proved to regulate T cell-mediated immune response.
