The objective was to find whether cow growth, milk performance, and behaviour are affected by (1) rearing conditions until weaning after a milk-fed period of 84 d and (2) the sire lineage. Thirty-five Holstein heifers were assigned to one of three treatments: SM, , pen with mother to 21st day, then group pen (they received a maximum of 6 kg of milk daily); SN, , after 3 d with own mother in pen with nursing cow (they received a maximum of 6 kg of milk daily); H, , in hutch from the 2nd to 56th day (6 kg of milk replacer daily), then loose housing pen to weaning (6 kg of milk replacer daily). After weaning at the 84th day, all heifers were kept in pens with the same ration as during calving.

The present in vitro study was conducted to examine the direct action of the plant steroidal sapogenin, diosgenin, on basic farm animal ovarian cell functions. As models, we used cultured porcine ovarian granulosa cells, porcine whole follicles, and rabbit ovarian fragments. We compared the effect of two synthetic mammalian mTOR blockers MC2141 and MC2183 with that of natural/plant-derived mTOR blocker rapamycin and mTOR activator resveratrol on cultured human ovarian granulosa cells. The common usage of protein-free diets to estimate unspecific AA losses has been criticised as unphysiological and incorrect. Therefore, in this study different diets were tested for the determination of endogenous losses (EL) of amino acids (AA) and nitrogen (N) assuming a complete absorption in the small intestine. The effects of neuropeptide Y (NPY; 0, 10, 100 and 1000 ng/mL) on the expression of PCNA, bax and p53 were examined by immunocytochemistry in porcine luteinized granulosa cells. NPY inhibited proliferation as well as promoted apoptosis and accumulation of p53 in the cells. This is the first report to demonstrate the direct action of NPY on ovarian cell proliferation and apoptosis.

Barley/soybean meal (SBM) group was fed a concentrate starting from 2 weeks of age, whereas alfalfa group received a mixture of concentrate and alfalfa hay in which the proportion of the latter was gradually increased from 20% to 70% between weeks 2 and 9 of age. The total volatile fatty acid concentration in rumen fluid of calves increased with age, but at 9 weeks there were no significant differences between the two diets (barley/SBM group 153 mmol/l, alfalfa group 150 mmol/l).

The effect of composition of feed concentrate on the development of rumen digestion in suckling lambs was investigated. The experimental group of lambs was offered special concentrate diets (SCD I and SCD II), which, compared to routinely produced commercial mixtures CCD 1 and CCD 2, were completely cleared of milk protein, enriched with legumes and alfalfa meal and supplemented with cut alfalfa of the particle size 1 cm. Significantly higher concentrations of total volatile fatty acids (VFA) were recorded in experimental lambs at the age of 7, 9 and 11 weeks.
