Pilocytic astrocytomas (PAs) are benign grade 1 gliomas according to the World Health Organization (WHO). They are common in children but rare in adults in whom they may have a worse prognosis. Pediatric PAs are usually associated with dysregulation of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway, often involving BRAF alterations such as the KIAA1549::BRAF (K-B) fusion or V600E mutation.

Article Synopsis
  • High-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) has high rates of recurrence and progression, and there's a need to better understand the tumor microenvironment (TME) for identifying treatment outcome biomarkers.
  • Researchers analyzed TME components and PD-L1 expression in 73 NMIBC patients, finding significant changes in tissue compared to non-tumoral samples, including increased cancer-associated fibroblasts and altered immune cell distributions.
  • The study identified myofibroblasts (myoCAFs) and M2-like macrophages as particularly significant in high-grade NMIBC, with myoCAFs correlating to higher rates of cancer progression and recurrence, providing insights for future prognostic markers.

Vitamin D receptor and its antiproliferative effect in human pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Sci Rep

November 2024

Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Facultad de Medicina, School of Medicine, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Pza Ramón y Cajal s/n., 28040, Madrid, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • Vitamin D deficiency in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) patients is linked to a poorer prognosis, and this study investigates the role of the vitamin D receptor (VDR) in the pulmonary vasculature.
  • VDR is found in pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMC), and its expression is lower in PAH patients compared to non-hypertensive controls, but can be increased by calcitriol treatment.
  • Calcitriol not only raises VDR expression but also has an antiproliferative effect on PASMC, which involves the modulation of specific genes like survivin and BMP signaling, suggesting potential therapeutic implications for PAH.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a devastating neuromuscular disease characterized by progressive motor function and muscle mass loss. Despite extensive research in the field, the underlying causes of ALS remain incompletely understood, contributing to the absence of specific diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers and effective therapies. This study investigates the expression of long-non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in skeletal muscle as a potential source of biomarkers and therapeutic targets for the disease.

Pediatricians need to be knowledgeable to adequately carry out their role in the support of breastfeeding, so assessing their knowledge of breastfeeding is vitally important. There are not English language validated questionnaires for pediatricians in the literature; however, in Spanish and Portuguese, there is the Breastfeeding Knowledge Survey (ECoLa, derived from ). Our goal is to translate the ECoLa into English.

Introduction: Health-related quality of life (HRQL) assessment plays a crucial role in the follow-up care of lung transplanted (LTx) patients. Previous reports have indicated that the HRQL achieved by these patients is often poorer compared to that of healthy individuals. However, the factors contributing to this lower HRQL remain unclear.

Nosocomial infections are a frequent and serious problem in extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants. Donor human milk (DHM) is the best alternative for feeding these babies when mother's own milk (MOM) is not available. Recently, a patented prototype of a High-Temperature Short-Time (HTST) pasteurizer adapted to a human milk bank setting showed a lesser impact on immunologic components.

Modulation of tumor microenvironment by targeting histone acetylation in bladder cancer.

Cell Death Discov

January 2024

Molecular Oncology Unit, Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas, Medioambientales y Tecnológicas (CIEMAT), Madrid, Spain.

Alterations in the epigenetic machinery in both tumor and immune cells contribute to bladder cancer (BC) development, constituting a promising target as an alternative therapeutic option. Here, we have explored the effects of a novel histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor CM-1758, alone or in combination with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) in BC. We determined the antitumor effects of CM-1758 in various BC cell lines together with the induction of broad transcriptional changes, with focus on the epigenetic regulation of PD-L1.

This video abstract delves into the expanded definition of diabetic striatopathy, linked initially to hyperglycemia-induced choreoballism and striatal hyperintensity on magnetic resonance imaging, but now recognized to encompass a broader range of acute onset, non-choreoballistic movement disorders in diabetes mellitus, including tremors, hemifacial spasm, parkinsonism, different types of myoclonus, dystonia, restless leg syndrome, ataxia, and dyskinesias. We report the case of a 45-year-old female patient with type-2 diabetes mellitus who developed propriospinal myoclonus, characterized by painless, involuntary jerky movements of the bilateral lower limbs in a supine position after admission for suspected rhino-orbital mucormycosis. The abnormal movements resolved entirely following the control of her blood glucose levels, suggesting a direct correlation between hyperglycemia and the clinical picture.
