Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), a major regulator of neuroendocrine response to stress, is involved in the control of energy balance and thus may affect body composition and growth. The porcine CRH (pCRH) gene was studied as a comparative-positional candidate for QTL for longissimus muscle area, average backfat thickness, carcass length, and average daily gain on test on porcine chromosome 4. Sequence of the complete transcriptional unit of pCRH gene spanning 2068bp was determined along with 582bp of the 5'-flanking region.

Purpose Of Review: While there are reports on the nature of synthesis and absorption of intestinal microbial lysine in humans and non-ruminant animals, there are few efforts to quantify microbial amino acid absorption in human subjects. We review the available information on the synthesis of microbial lysine and the quantification of its absorption and utilization by the human host and monogastric model animals. In addition, we explore the impact of microbial lysine on the current estimated average requirement of dietary lysine.

In the pig, a temporal relationship is suggested between sperm release from the sperm reservoir (SR) and ovulation, but the mechanism(s) is still under discussion. Feeding experiments with diets containing Fusarium toxin-contaminated wheat were conducted to clarify the pathogenesis of immunological effects of Fusarium toxins to porcine spleen cells. This study aimed to test the hypothesis that maintenance energy requirement (MEm) can be estimated from continuous heat production measurements during a change from a near maintenance feeding level to far below maintenance for two consecutive days. The MEm of eight Hereford steers weighing 286 +/- 5 kg (mean +/- SE) was determined in a balance trial. In addition, during the 10-d collection period, the animals were kept in open-circuit respiration chambers to measure 24-h gas exchange continuously at 10-min intervals.

Expression of the bactericidal peptide beta-defensin 5 (BNBD5) is strongly induced by bacterial infections of the udder (mastitis). In situ hybridizations showed that bacteria elicit a strong, locally restricted expression of BNBD5 in mammary epithelial cells (MEC). We defined the BNBD5 promoter by primer extension and showed with reporter gene assays in murine HC-11 and primary bovine mammary epithelial cell (pbMEC) cultures that a 1kb segment of the promoter is induced about 3-fold by heat-killed bacteria, LPS, IL-1beta and TNFalpha.

To enable us to handle a large number of oocytes at a given time and to have an increased throughput of cloned embryos, we attempted the Handmade cloning (HMC) technique, a zona-free method of bovine somatic cell nuclear transfer. This study aims to identify hepatic genes affecting traits related to muscularity and obesity by combining expression analyses, association studies, and gene mapping. Functional candidate genes with trait-associated expression were obtained by hybridising custom made application-specific cDNA microarrays with targets of discordant sib pairs of a porcine experimental population. The peptide was released from a commercial 4-week depot formulation (Decapeptyl Depot) administered at animals' estrus (day 0).
