Soy-derived isoflavones have been reported to be specific inhibitors of protein tyrosine kinases like the type 1 insulin-like growth factor receptor (IGF-1R) and the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). To re-examine the relationship of birth weight with carcass and meat quality of pigs at market weight, offspring (n=378) of 63 sows were assigned to three birth weight groups; 25% low weight (LW), 50% middle weight (MW), and 25% heavy weight (HW), with runts (<800g) being excluded. LW pigs exhibited the lowest postnatal growth performance, the lowest lean mass and the greatest degree of fatness in terms of perirenal fat compared with MW and HW pigs. Only in females, but not in male castrates, the lean percentage was highest in HW pigs.

The cytoskeleton, consisting of complex and dynamic systems of structural filaments, intermediate filaments and microtubules, is not only a structural element but also contributes to many cellular processes such as functional compartments, transportation, mitosis, secretion, formation of cell extensions, and intercellular communication. Suggestions in rat 2-cell embryos that abnormal distributions of cytoskeletal proteins occurred following the initiations of developmental arrest and our former studies showing reduced intercellular contact zones in cloned bovine embryos prompted us to conduct comparative studies on 8-cell stage bovine embryos from nuclear transfer (NT), in vitro, and in vivo production. Immunohistochemistry and Laser-Scanning-Microscopy facilitated detection of cytoskeleton proteins--alpha-tubulin, F-actin, beta-catenin, and the cell adhesion protein cadherin; image and cluster analysis were subsequently used to study the distribution pattern of the proteins, whereas Western blot was carried out for their qualitative and quantitative analysis.

Using an automated learning device, we investigated "learning to learn" by dwarf goats (Capra hircus) in what was for them a familiar environment and normal social settings. In order to determine the effects of a varied level of dietary energy intake during pregnancy and lactation on milk yield and composition, first, second and fourth parity sows (Large White x German Landrace) were provided with energy at a level of either: (i) 100% of ME requirement (MEreq) during pregnancy and lactation, (ii) 120% MEreq during pregnancy and 80% during lactation, and (iii) 80% MEreq during pregnancy and 120% during lactation. In spite of equal target levels feed analysis revealed that gestating first parity sows with 120/80 treatment combination and lactating sows of 80/120 treatment combination received 25, and 11-17% more digestible N than in the respective 100/100 treatment combination.
