Background: The cornea plays a role in the refractive power of the eye, and when its natural curvature and thickness are compromised by diseases such as keratoconus or high myopia, this results in loss of visual acuity. Intracorneal rings (ICRs) were developed as a treatment option to restore the natural corneal curvature by implanting rings into tunnels cut within the corneal stroma. However, selecting and placing the appropriate ring can be difficult, and predicting refractive outcomes is challenging.

Article Synopsis
  • Machine learning can predict risk factors for graft rejection in corneal transplants for keratoconus patients, using data collected over 27 years.
  • Five different supervised learning algorithms were employed, and they all similarly identified key risk factors associated with rejection.
  • The study found that the technique of keratoplasty, along with factors like patient age and donor age, significantly influenced the likelihood of graft rejection, recommending continued low-dose corticosteroid treatment post-surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • The current optogenetic approach risks damaging retinal cells because the light intensity needed is too high, but red-shifted lights are safer than blue lights.
  • Researchers created three new red-shifted variants of Opto-mGluR6 (ROM17, ROM18, ROM19) using bioinformatics, and tests confirmed that these variants effectively respond to the desired light wavelengths and can activate G-protein signaling safely.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the short-term outcomes of a modified Boston keratoprosthesis device (ORC-KPro) in patients suffering from end-stage corneal blindness.
  • It included 12 patients (mostly middle-aged and male) where corneal blindness was primarily due to chemical burns or previous graft failures, achieving anatomical success for all cases.
  • While most patients experienced improved vision post-surgery, functional success was restricted because of underlying severe eye conditions, impacting overall visual potential.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a microvascular complication associated with diabetes mellitus (DM). During the course of the disease, high blood glucose levels induce damage to the vasculature of the retina and promote neovascularization. Although numerous environmental risk factors have been associated with the emergence of DR, the role of genetics should not be underestimated.

Underserved groups could be better considered within population-based eye health surveys: a methodological study.

J Clin Epidemiol

September 2024

School of Optometry & Vision Science, The University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand; International Centre for Eye Health, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, London, United Kingdom. Electronic address:

Objectives: In pursuit of health equity, the World Health Organization has recently called for more extensive monitoring of inequalities in eye health. Population-based eye health surveys can provide this information, but whether underserved groups are considered in the design, implementation, and reporting of surveys is unknown. We conducted a systematic methodological review of surveys published since 2000 to examine how many population-based eye health surveys have considered underserved groups in their design, implementation, or reporting.

Approaches for delivery of refractive and optical care services in community and primary care settings.

Cochrane Database Syst Rev

May 2024

Vision and Eye Care Programme, World Health Organization, Geneva, Switzerland.

Background: Uncorrected refractive error is a leading cause of vision impairment which, in most cases, can be managed with the appropriate spectacle correction. In 2021, the World Health Assembly endorsed a global target of a 40-percentage-point increase in effective coverage of refractive error by 2030. To achieve this global target, equitable access to refractive and optical services within community and primary care settings needs to be strengthened.
