Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a representative age-related ophthalmic disease, and the pathogenesis of AMD remains unclear. This research intended to determine whether epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) could alleviate the progression of AMD and the possible mechanism. We constructed three groups of mice (young, aged, and EGCG), and HE and TUNEL staining of retinal tissues was performed to observe the structural changes in the retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) layer and the level of apoptosis, respectively.

State Key Laboratory of Experimental Hematology, the Province and Ministry Co-sponsored Collaborative Innovation Center for Medical Epigenetics, Key Laboratory of Immune Microenvironment and Disease (Ministry of Education), Tianjin Key Laboratory of Medical Epigenetics, Department of Cell Biology, Tianjin Medical University, Qixiangtai Road 22, Tianjin 300070, China; Tianjin Key Laboratory of Epigenetics for Organ Development of Premature Infants, Tianjin 300450, China. Electronic address:

Unintentional, early pregnancy alcohol consumption affects embryonic development. During the peri-implantation stage, coinciding with the transition from naive to primed pluripotency, the long isoform of KDM2B (KDM2BLF) underlies the de novo establishment of polycomb repressive complex (PRC) functions at promoters after fertilization. However, it remains unclear whether and how ethanol exposure affects this spatiotemporal chromatin setting.

Development and evaluation of a liposome hydrogel system for enhanced delivery of drospirenone at higher doses.

J Biomater Appl

December 2024

College of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Resource Utilization, Northeast Forestry University, Heilongjiang, People's Republic of China.

Article Synopsis
  • Drospirenone (DROP) is a new progestin that effectively reduces estrogen-related sodium retention and positively impacts premenstrual syndrome (PMS), but it has low bioavailability due to poor water solubility and chemical instability.
  • Researchers developed a two-step delivery system involving a liposome complex that achieves an 878-fold increase in solubility with an encapsulation efficiency of 84.9%.
  • The drospirenone liposome complex was further stabilized using a cellulose-based hydrogel, allowing for uniform loading and significant drug delivery potential, with 0.5 g of hydrogel capable of holding 96.48 mg of drospirenone.

Background: Breastmilk is widely regarded as the healthiest choice for both infants and mothers due to its numerous advantages over formula, such as higher concentrations of essential nutrients and antibodies, easier digestion, and superior taste. The World Health Organization International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes was adopted over 40 years ago to mitigate the effects of infant formula marketing on a woman's decision to breastfeed. Yet, the commercial formula milk industry has continued to market their products aggressively and through an increasing variety of social media channels.

Introduction: Biological age (BA) can represent the actual state of human aging more accurately than chronological age (CA).

Methods: Using hematological data from 112,925 participants in southwestern China, collected between 2015 and 2021, this study constructed BA predictors using 7 machine learning (ML) methods (tailored separately for male and female populations). This study then analyzed the association between BA acceleration and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) within this data using logistic regression.

RNA-seq analysis of mitochondria-related genes regulated by AMPK in the human trophoblast cell line BeWo.

Animal Model Exp Med

October 2024

Department of Physiology and Biophysics, College of Medicine, Howard University, Washington, District of Columbia, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study examines how AMPK signaling affects mitochondrial functions and mitophagy in human trophoblast cells, particularly using next generation RNA-seq to identify relevant genes and pathways.
  • - It found that knocking down specific AMPK genes (PRKAA1/2) resulted in lower ATP production, especially in mitochondria, and identified a total of 1,092 differentially expressed genes.
  • - Analysis revealed clusters of mitochondria-related genes that may play a role in the altered mitochondrial functions due to reduced AMPK signaling, providing insights into the importance of AMPK in cell energy management.

Echinoderm microtubule-associated protein 4 (EML4) - anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) fusion gene detection is of great significance in personalized tumor treatment. With the development of EML4-ALK fusion variants detection, it is necessary to establish traceability to ensure the consistency and comparability of its detection results in clinical practice. The establishment of traceability relies on SI traceable reference materials (RMs) and potential reference measurement procedures (RMPs).

Copper-containing intrauterine devices (Cu-IUD) are adopted by worldwide women for contraception with the advantages of long-term effectiveness, reversibility and affordability. However, adverse effects occur in the initial implantation stage of Cu-IUD in uterine because of the burst release of Cu. To minimize the burst release, in this study, we designed a series of Cu-Fe alloys with 0.

Quantitation of BCR-ABL1 with the quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) is very important in monitoring chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), which relies on an RNA reference material. A genomic RNA reference material (RM) containing the BCR-ABL1 P210 fusion mutation was developed, and an absolute quantitative method based on one-step reverse transcription digital PCR (RT-dPCR) was established for characterizing the RM. The proposed dPCR method demonstrates high accuracy and excellent analytical sensitivity, as shown by the linear relationship (0.

A Degradable Bioelectronic Scaffold for Localized Cell Transfection toward Enhancing Wound Healing in a 3D Space.

Adv Mater

October 2024

Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Biomedical Engineering, School of Biological Science and Medical Engineering, Beihang University, Beijing, 100191, China.

Large skin wounds, with extensive surface area and deep vertical full-thickness involvement, can pose significant challenges in clinical settings. Traditional routes for repairing skin wounds encompass three hallmarks: 1) scab formation for hemostasis; 2) proliferation and migration of epidermal cells for wound closure; 3) proliferation, migration, and functionalization of fibroblasts and endothelial cells for dermal remodeling. However, this route face remarkable challenges to healing large wounds, usually leading to disordered structures and loss of functions in the regenerated skin, due to limited control on the transition among the three stages.
