Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of Relatox, a type of botulinum toxin, in treating focal spasticity of the upper limb caused by cerebrovascular accidents or traumatic brain injuries.
  • It involved 210 patients divided into two groups; one received Relatox injections, while the other received Dysport. Both groups showed a reduction in spasticity over 12 weeks, with no significant differences between the two treatments.
  • Various measurements were used to assess spasticity, disability, pain, and treatment satisfaction, and both medications were found to be effective, with a report on adverse events collected throughout the study.

An expert consensus statement on biomarkers of ageing for use in intervention studies.

J Gerontol A Biol Sci Med Sci

December 2024

Human Nutrition & Exercise Research Centre, Centre for Healthier Lives, Population Health Sciences Institute, Newcastle University, Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK.

Biomarkers of ageing serve as important outcome measures in longevity-promoting interventions. However, there is limited consensus on which specific biomarkers are most appropriate for human intervention studies. This work aimed to address this need by establishing an expert consensus on biomarkers of ageing for use in intervention studies via the Delphi method.

The impact of early life experiences on inhibitory control and working memory.

Developmental psychology & Family pedagogic department, Herzen University, Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Introduction: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are a general term for a large group of nonequivalent situations that have the potential to traumatise a child. This risk factor is caused by a sensitive period of brain development, which is based on myelination, creation of synaptic connections and pruning. Dramatic environmental events during this period, such as history of institutionalisation, can disrupt optimal developmental pathways, leaving biological scars for life.

The mechanical properties of soft gels hold significant relevance in biomedicine and biomaterial design, including the development of tissue engineering constructs and bioequivalents. It is important to adequately characterize the gel's mechanical properties since they play a role both in the overall structural properties of the construct and the physiological responses of cells. The question remains which approach for the mechanical characterization is most suitable for specific biomaterials.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to evaluate a new method for correcting gait in patients with central hemiparesis and foot deformities (talipes equinovarus).
  • - Patients were assessed using specialized orthopedic footwear, which led to improvements in walking stability, symmetry, and reduced fall risk.
  • - The findings suggest that this approach enhances gait performance without reducing muscle tone in the affected limb, helping to increase walking speed and safety.

Importance: Pregnancy induces unique physiologic changes to the immune response and hormonal changes leading to plausible differences in the risk of developing post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC), or Long COVID. Exposure to SARS-CoV-2 during pregnancy may also have long-term ramifications for exposed offspring, and it is critical to evaluate the health outcomes of exposed children. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery (RECOVER) Multi-site Observational Study of PASC aims to evaluate the long-term sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection in various populations.

Cancer virotherapy is an alternative therapeutic approach based on the viruses that selectively infect and kill tumor cells. Vaccinia virus (VV) is a member of the Poxviridae, a family of enveloped viruses with a large linear double-stranded DNA genome. The proven safety of the VV strains as well as considerable transgene capacity of the viral genome, make VV an excellent platform for creating recombinant oncolytic viruses for cancer therapy.

The effect of humic acids and substances with similar action - derivatives of succinic acid (ethylmethylhydroxypyridine succinate) and combined agent consisting of succinic acid, nicotinamide, riboflavin, and riboxin on the performance and stress resistance of experimental rats was studied. Performance was assessed in the test of exhaustive forced swimming with a load, stress resistance was evaluated by the serum level of corticosterone and open field behavior, and the state of anaerobic metabolism was estimated by the serum level of lactate after swimming test. Humic acids from peat showed anti-stress activity comparable to that of the officinal preparation and preventive effect on fatigue during physical exercise.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is one of the basic culprits behind chronic liver disease, which may result in cirrhosis and hepatocarcinoma. In spite of the extensive research conducted, a vaccine against HCV has not been yet created. We have obtained human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) and used them for expressing the HCV NS5A protein as a model vaccination platform.

Objective: To study the effect of the repair stimulator alpha-glutamyl-tryptophan on the morphological characteristics of the gastric mucosa and the expression of CXCL-12 and CDX-2 in chronic atrophic gastritis associated with .

Material And Methods: Biopsy samples of 116 patients with a verified diagnosis of chronic atrophic gastritis associated with were analyzed in a multicenter double-blind randomized placebo-controlled study. During the morphological study, the parameters characterizing the process of atrophy were evaluated: the number of glands per 1 mm of the gastric mucosa, the depth of the gastric mucosa glands, the number of parietal cells per 100 epithelial cells of the gastric mucosa, and the presence of signs of intestinal metaplasia.

October 2022

R. Gorbacheva Memorial Research Institute of Pediatric Oncology, Hematology and Transplantation, Pavlov University, St. Petersburg 197022, Russia.

Intestinal complications are common after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). However, only scarce data concern herpesvirus incidence in the colonic mucosa post-HSCT. Our purpose was to assess the frequency and clinical significance of cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein−Barr virus (EBV), human herpesvirus type 6 (HHV6), and herpes simplex virus (HSV) in the colonic mucosa post-HSCT.
