Children of Single Fathers Created by Surrogacy: Psychosocial Adjustment Considerations and Implications for Research and Practice.

Children (Basel)

October 2022

Department of Psychology and Education, Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, University of Beira Interior, Pόlo IV, 6200-209 Covilhã, Portugal.

The existence of single-father families formed by surrogacy is becoming a more visible reality, even though this type of family organization is still perceived with stigma and negative attitudes by more traditional sectors of society, because it raises some concerns regarding the psychosocial well-being of children who are born into single-fathers' families via surrogacy, and in many cases, to gay single men who wish to become fathers. On the other hand, available research on the psychosocial well-being of these children is still very scarce and limited to a handful of Western countries. Hence, it is of utmost importance to examine studies that explore the psychosocial adjustment of these children.

Ongoing Bidirectional Feedback between Planning and Assessment in Educational Contexts: A Narrative Review.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

September 2022

Centre for Research, Education, Innovation, and Intervention in Sport (CIFI2D), Faculty of Sport of the University of Porto (FADEUP), Rua Dr. Plácido da Costa 91, 4200-450 Porto, Portugal.

Quality in education is one of the 17 goals in the United Nations' sustainable agenda for 2030, presupposing careful planning and assessment of learning. Traditional planning in sports education (either in training or school settings) largely adopts pre-determined learning sequences and temporal milestones that, in theory, enhance the learning process. However, learning is a context-dependent, non-linear process with considerable intra- and interindividual variability, whereby planning and assessment should also be non-linear.

Background: For a long time, in sports, researchers have tried to understand an expert by comparing them with novices, raising the doubts if the visual search characteristics distinguish experts from novices. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to review and conduct a meta-analysis to evaluate the differences in visual search behavior between experts and novices in team sports athletes.

Methods: This systematic review with meta-analysis followed the PRISMA 2020 and Cochrane's guidelines.

Compensatory training sessions have been highlighted as useful strategies to solve the differential weekly training load between the players' starting status. However, the influence of the players' starting status is still understudied in sub-elite youth football. Thus, the aim of this study was to compare the weekly training load on a standard microcycle in starters and non-starters of a sub-elite youth football academy.

Article Synopsis
  • Fitness professionals (FPs) in Portugal were surveyed to assess their quality of life (QoL) and its relation to various sociodemographic and work-related factors, revealing that their QoL is below average compared to other countries.
  • Results indicated that certain characteristics, such as being male, married, and having a higher education, are linked to better QoL scores, while unpaid working hours significantly impact their overall well-being.
  • The findings suggest that improving the QoL of FPs could enhance their work efficiency and reduce turnover in the fitness industry, ultimately promoting a healthier society.

Analyzing the within and between Players Variability of Heart Rate and Locomotor Responses in Small-Sided Soccer Games Performed Repeatedly over a Week.

Healthcare (Basel)

July 2022

Escola Superior Desporto e Lazer, Instituto Politécnico de Viana do Castelo, Rua Escola Industrial e Comercial de Nun'Álvares, 4900-347 Viana do Castelo, Portugal.

Background: Small-sided games (SSGs) are drill-based and constrained exercises designed to promote a technical/tactical and physiological/physical stimulus on players while preserving some dynamics of the real game. However, as a dynamic game, they can offer some variability making the prediction of the stimulus hardest for the coach. Aim: The purpose of this study was to analyze the between-session and within-player variability of heart rates and locomotor responses of young male soccer players in 3v3 and 5v5 small-sided game formats.

The studies focused on analysing attitudes toward homosexuality show that the manifestation of homonegativity has evolved into more modern forms. We therefore propose using instruments that capture subtle aspects in discrimination against gay and lesbian people. The objective of this study is twofold.

Small-sided games (SSGs) are widely used in soccer training. However, some of the typical outcomes related to human responses during these games (namely internal and external load) may vary between sessions for similar practice conditions. Thus, the study of intra- and inter-bout variability in response to SSGs is progressively growing.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the physiological and locomotor demands of small-sided games (3v3 and 5v5) with those of official 11v11 soccer matches, as well as to examine how these demands relate to the fitness levels of youth soccer players.
  • Over three weeks, twenty youth players were tested on various fitness metrics, including their heart rates and movement patterns during both small-sided games and matches.
  • Findings indicated that while there were some correlations between fitness levels and performance in 5v5 games, overall physiological and locomotor demands were largely different between small-sided games and official matches.
