Max Egon Thiel's chapter on the ecology of rhizostomes in his review up to 1970 covered a bewildering variety of topics, many of which are the focus of other chapters in this volume: their interactions with humans; their associations with other organisms; their venoms. Although he also discussed their habitats and habits, the effects of environmental conditions on distribution, and patterns in seasonality, he paid scant attention to blooms, he did not write about their role in the wider ecosystem, and he ignored alien introductions. It is clearly impossible to comprehensively update Thiel's review in a similar vein - we don't have the space - and so we have decided to focus our efforts here on either those topics that particularly fascinated him (seasonality), or those that he did not write about (alien introductions, their role in the ecosystem).

The final disposal of NORM wastes in conventional landfill generally determines problems of acceptance by the landfill operators, since their willingness to accept Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) is often limited due to their concern about the radiological risks and reluctance of the local community to have at local landfills material that despite being cleared is still perceived as 'radioactive'. In order to raise awareness among landfill operators, and also among other stakeholders on the actual radiological risk of exempted or cleared NORM wastes, it is of interest to estimate the mass of annual wastes containing NORM that can be disposed of in a landfill for conventional waste complying with the annual dose criterion of 1 mSv. A methodology was developed considering a hypothetical homogeneous large landfill and assuming that NORM wastes are delivered with an initial activity concentration of 1 kBq kg.

This study assesses the production potential, environmental impact, and economic viability of generating biohydrogen from biomethane obtained from the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (MSW) using steam methane reforming with carbon capture and storage (CCS). As the emissions are biogenic, CCS results in negative emissions. The methodology is based on a previously developed model, including techno-economic analysis based on the levelised cost of hydrogen (LCOH) and mobility (LCOM), and environmental assessment, focusing on production potential, cost estimates, and emissions impact.

Remote sensing techniques have emerged as valuable tools for characterizing pollutant emissions from large vehicle fleets and identifying high emitter single vehicles in real driving conditions. Nevertheless, the use of these systems for official emission control purposes by public administrations is an issue because the remote sensing devices must obtain official metrological certification, which currently lacks an international technical standard. The optoelectronic and structural characteristics of the ZnCrSe (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) semiconductor are reported by employing density functional theory (DFT) within the mBJ potential. The findings revealed that the lattice constant decreases with increasing Cr concentration, although the bulk modulus exhibits the opposite trend. ZnSe is a direct bandgap material; however, a change from direct to indirect electronic bandgap has been seen with Cr presence.
