Services Addressing Mental Health Needs of Youth in Physical Rehabilitation: Perspectives of Clinicians, Youth and Family Members.

Child Care Health Dev

January 2025

School of Physical and Occupational Therapy, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, McGill University, Montreal, QC, Canada.

Article Synopsis
  • Limited understanding of mental health services for youth with physical disabilities in rehabilitation settings prompted a study to identify needs and challenges.
  • A qualitative approach involved 22 interviews with youth, families, and clinicians from five rehabilitation centers, leading to three key themes: resources, clinician capacity, and partnerships.
  • Findings highlight barriers like lack of mental health knowledge and access during transitions, suggesting that improved training, staffing, and external collaboration can enhance service delivery.

MicroRNA signature for early prediction of knee osteoarthritis structural progression using integrated machine and deep learning approaches.

Osteoarthritis Cartilage

November 2024

Henry Ford Health + Michigan State University Health Sciences, Detroit, USA; Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics, Wayne State University, Detroit, USA. Electronic address:

Objective: Conventional methodologies are ineffective in predicting the rapid progression of knee osteoarthritis (OA). MicroRNAs (miRNAs) show promise as biomarkers for patient stratification. We aimed to develop a miRNA prognosis model for identifying knee OA structural progressors/non-progressors using integrated machine/deep learning tools.

Introduction: Our objective was to identify published, peer-reviewed, epidemiological studies that estimated associations between the risk of developing or dying from malignant breast cancer and past exposure to selected organic solvents with reactive metabolites, to delineate the methods used and to synthesize the results.

Content: We undertook a structured review of case-control and cohort studies used to investigate breast cancer risk and exposure to selected organic solvents that produce reactive metabolites in the body. We used SCOPUS, MEDLINE (Ovid) and Web of Science databases from 1966 to December 31, 2023 to identify epidemiological studies that estimated associations between the risk of developing or dying from malignant breast cancer and past exposure to selected organic solvents with reactive metabolites and organic solvents combined as a group.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on high-grade epithelial ovarian cancer survivors post-chemotherapy, analyzing their sleep quality, duration, efficiency, and insomnia, and how these factors relate to the risk of disease recurrence.
  • Out of 97 women surveyed, over half reported poor sleep quality, efficiency, and duration, while a majority did not experience insomnia; these sleep patterns remained consistent after four months.
  • The results indicated no significant correlation between sleep characteristics and cancer recurrence overall, but suggested a potential association for fully platinum-sensitive women, highlighting the need for further research with larger groups to clarify these relationships.

Body fatness across the adult life course and ovarian cancer risk.

Eur J Epidemiol

October 2024

Department of Oncology, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, McGill University, Montreal, QC, Canada.

Article Synopsis
  • Excess body fat in older age can increase the risk of ovarian cancer, although the connection is not very strong.
  • A study in Montreal analyzed body mass index (BMI) data over decades for women 50 and older to understand different life stages' impact on ovarian cancer risk.
  • The findings indicate that the accumulation hypothesis best explains the link between BMI and ovarian cancer risk, particularly highlighting the early childbearing years as a potentially sensitive period for increased risk.

In this article, a method to develop 3D printable hybrid sodium alginate and albumin foam, crosslinked with calcium chloride mist is introduced. Using this method, highly porous structures are produced without the need of further postprocessing (such as freeze drying). The proposed method is particularly beneficial in the development of wound dressing as the printed foams show excellent lift-off and water absorption properties.

Radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF, 100 kHz to 300 GHz) are classified by IARC as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B). This study evaluates the potential association between occupational RF-EMF exposure and brain tumor risk, utilizing for the first time, a RF-EMF job-exposure matrix (RF-JEM) developed in the multi-country INTEROCC case-control study. Cumulative and time-weighted average (TWA) occupational RF-EMF exposures were estimated for study participants based on lifetime job histories linked to the RF-JEM using three different methods: (1) by considering RF-EMF intensity among all exposed jobs, (2) by considering RF-EMF intensity among jobs with an exposure prevalence ≥ the median exposure prevalence of all exposed jobs, and (3) by considering RF-EMF intensity of jobs of participants who reported RF-EMF source use.

Proinflammatory cytokines suppress nonsense-mediated RNA decay to impair regulated transcript isoform processing in pancreatic β cells.

Front Endocrinol (Lausanne)

April 2024

Section of Cell Biology and Functional Genomics, Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism, Department of Metabolism, Digestion and Reproduction, Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College London, London, United Kingdom.

Introduction: Proinflammatory cytokines are implicated in pancreatic ß cell failure in type 1 and type 2 diabetes and are known to stimulate alternative RNA splicing and the expression of nonsense-mediated RNA decay (NMD) components. Here, we investigate whether cytokines regulate NMD activity and identify transcript isoforms targeted in ß cells.

Methods: A luciferase-based NMD reporter transiently expressed in rat INS1(832/13), human-derived EndoC-ßH3, or dispersed human islet cells is used to examine the effect of proinflammatory cytokines (Cyt) on NMD activity.

Context: Studies generally focus on one type of chronic condition and the effect of medical cannabis (MC) on symptoms; little is known about the perceptions and engagement of patients living with chronic conditions regarding the use of MC.

Objectives: This scoping review aims to explore: (1) what are the dimensions addressed in studies on MC that deal with patients' perceptions of MC? and (2) how have patients been engaged in developing these studies and their methodologies? Through these objectives, we have identified areas for improving future research.

Methods: We searched five databases and applied exclusion criteria to select relevant articles.

Background: In the causal mediation analysis framework, several parametric regression-based approaches have been introduced in past years for decomposing the total effect of an exposure on a binary outcome into a direct effect and an indirect effect through a target mediator. In this context, a well-known strategy involves specifying a logistic model for the outcome and invoking the rare outcome assumption (ROA) to simplify estimation. Recently, exact estimators for natural direct and indirect effects have been introduced to circumvent the challenges prompted by the ROA.

Objectives: To evaluate the sensitivity and the specificity of summating potential (SP)/action potential (AP) area under the curve (AUC) ratio by a transtympanic electrode and a click stimulus (TT-CS), SP/AP AUC ratio by an extratympanic electrode and a click stimulus (ET-CS) and SP amplitude value by a transtympanic electrode and tone burst stimulus (TT-TBS) in regard of Ménière's disease (MD) diagnosis. This is the first study that compares SP amplitude value performed by a TT-TBS and the SP/AP AUC ratio performed by a TT-CS.
