Nutritional epidemiology aims to link dietary exposures to chronic disease, but the instruments for evaluating dietary intake are inaccurate. One way to identify unreliable data and the sources of errors is to compare estimated intakes with the total energy expenditure (TEE). In this study, we used the International Atomic Energy Agency Doubly Labeled Water Database to derive a predictive equation for TEE using 6,497 measures of TEE in individuals aged 4 to 96 years.

The Rho Kinase (ROCK) pathway is recognized to be involved in changes that lead to remodeling in pulmonary hypertension (PH), particularly cellular processes including signaling, contraction, migration, proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. Simvastatin (Sim) has a potent anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic effect on vasculature smooth muscle cells through the inhibition of the synthesis of isoprenoids intermediates which are essential for the post-translational isoprenylation of Rho, Rac, and Ras family GTPases. Sim targets the underlying mechanism in vascular remodeling.

Wheat is a highly relevant crop worldwide, and like other massive crops, it is susceptible to foliar diseases, which can cause devastating losses. The current strategies to counteract wheat diseases include global monitoring of pathogens, developing resistant genetic varieties, and agrochemical applications upon diseases' appearance. However, the suitability of these strategies is far from permanent, so other alternatives based on the stimulation of the plants' systemic responses are being explored.

It has been reported that polysaccharides like carrageenan can change the crystallization of lactose. However, it is still unclear whether changes in lactose mutarotation, solubility, and super-solubility are involved in carrageenans' effect on lactose crystallization. It has been established that the conversion of α- to β-lactose forms (mutarotation) in an aqueous solution has a significant impact on lactose crystallization.

Arabinoxylans (AX) are polysaccharides with antioxidant activity and emulsifying properties, which make them an attractive alternative for its potential application as a natural antioxidant in oils. Therefore, this work aimed to investigate the effect of ultrasonic treatment of AX on their antioxidant capacity and its ability to improve the oxidative stability of soybean oil. For this purpose, AX were exposed to ultrasonic treatment at 25% (100 W, AX-1) and 50% (200 W, AX-2) power and an operating frequency of 20 KHz during 15 min, and their macromolecular properties (weight average molecular weight (Mw), polydispersity index and intrinsic viscosity) were evaluated.

In Mexico, infants (0-2 years old) show the highest prevalence of vitamin A deficiency (VAD), measured by serum retinol concentrations. Thus, we consider that low vitamin A (VA) intake through breast milk (BM) combined with poor weaning practices are the main factors that contribute to VAD in this group. We combined the assessment of VA status in lactating women using BM retinol and a stable isotope 'dose-to-mother' technique to measure BM production in women from urban and agricultural areas.
