Masked cryptic kidney injury (MCKI), an early stage of acute kidney injury (AKI), is challenging to detect and diagnose, especially in the modern context where toxic substances, such as surfactants, are increasingly misused. Consequently, there is an urgent need for methods for the visual diagnosis of MCKI. In this study, we synthesized environmentally friendly spirulina-derived carbon dots (SpiCDs) using spirulina as a biobased raw material through a simple hydrothermal process.

Accurate detection of tumor margins is essential for successful cancer surgery. While indocyanine green (ICG)-based near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence (FL) surgical navigation enhances the visual identification of tumor margins, its accuracy remains subjective, underscoring the need for quantitative approaches. In this study, a high spatiotemporal fluorescence lifetime (FLT) imaging technology is developed in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) for quantitative tumor margin detection, utilizing folate receptor-targeted ICG nanoprobes (FPH-ICG).

Early-stage stroke monitoring enables timely intervention that is crucial to minimizing neuronal damage and increasing the extent of recovery. By monitoring collateral circulation and neovascularization after ischemic stroke, the natural recovery process can be better understood, optimize further treatment strategies, and improve the prognosis. Photoacoustic computed tomography (PACT), a non-invasive imaging modality that captures multiparametric high-resolution images of vessel structures, is well suited for evaluating cerebrovascular structures and their function.

Amyloidosis is characterized by the abnormal accumulation of misfolded proteins, called amyloid fibrils, leading to diverse clinical manifestations. Recent studies on the amyloidogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 protein segments have raised concerns on their potential link to post-infection neurodegeneration, however, the mechanisms remain unclear. Herein, we investigated the structure, stability, and amyloidogenic propensity of a nine-residue segment (SK9) of the SARS-CoV-2 envelope protein and their impact on neuronal protein α-synuclein (αSyn) aggregation.

Photoacoustic molecular imaging technology has a wide range of applications in biomedical research. In practical scenarios, both the probes and blood generate signals, resulting in the saliency of the probes in the blood environment being diminished, impacting imaging quality. Although several methods have been proposed for saliency enhancement, they inevitably suffer from moderate generality and detection speed.

Neuroinflammation is a significant pathological event involving the neurodegenerative process associated with many neurological disorders. Diagnosis and treatment of neuroinflammation in its early stage are essential for the prevention and management of neurological diseases. Herein, we designed macrophage membrane-coated photoacoustic (PA) probes (MSINPs), with targeting specificities based on naturally existing target-ligand interactions for the early diagnosis of neuroinflammation.

Wet-tissue adhesives have long been attractive materials for realizing complicated biomedical functions. However, the hydration film on wet tissues can generate a boundary, forming hydrogen bonds with the adhesives that weaken adhesive strength. Introducing black phosphorus (BP) is believed to enhance the water absorption capacity of tape-type adhesives and effectively eliminate hydration layers between the tissue and adhesive.

The endometrium microvessel system, responsible for supplying oxygen and nutrients to the embryo, holds significant importance in evaluating endometrial receptivity (ER). Visualizing this system directly can significantly enhance ER evaluation. Currently, clinical methods like Narrow-band hysteroscopy and Color Doppler ultrasound are commonly used for uterine blood vessel examination, but they have limitations in depth or resolution.

Genetically encoded voltage indicators (GEVIs) allow the direct visualization of cellular membrane potential at the millisecond time scale. Among these, red-emitting GEVIs have been reported to support multichannel recordings and manipulation of cellular activities with reduced autofluorescence background. However, the limited sensitivity and dimness of existing red GEVIs have restricted their applications in neuroscience.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) features atypical clinical manifestations and a low 5-year survival rate (< 5% in many developing countries where most of the disease occurs). Precise ESCC detection and grading toward timely and effective intervention are therefore crucial. In this study, we propose a multidimensional, slicing-free, and label-free histopathological evaluation method based on multispectral multiphoton fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (MM-FLIM) for precise ESCC identification.

In addition to inhibiting persistent inflammation, phosphatase and tensin homolog deleted from chromosome 10 (PTEN) is known as an important therapeutic target for alleviating rheumatoid arthritis (RA) symptoms. Modulation of PTEN gene expression in synovial tissue using messenger RNA (mRNA) is a promising approach to combat RA. However, mRNA therapeutics are often hampered by unsatisfactory stability and inefficient localization in synovial tissue.

The electrochemical CO reduction reaction (CORR) using renewable electricity is one of the most promising strategies for reaching the goal of carbon neutrality. Multicarbonous (C) products have broad applications, and ethanol is a valuable chemical and fuel. Many Cu-based catalysts have been reported to be efficient for the electrocatalytic CORR to C products, but they generally offer limited selectivity and current density toward ethanol.

The noninvasive two-photon excitation autofluorescence imaging of cellular and subcellular structure and dynamics in live tissue could provide critical information for biomedical studies. However, the two-photon microscopy of short-wavelength endogenous fluorophores, such as tryptophan and hemoglobin, is extremely limited due to the lack of suitable imaging techniques. In this study, we developed a short-wavelength excitation time- and spectrum-resolved two-photon microscopy system.

Micro-fabrication based on structured-beam-assisted Two-Photon Polymerization (2 PP) provides a rapid and flexible method for the manufacture of microstructures with complex morphologies. The tunable Abruptly Autofocusing Vortex (AAFV) beams were designed theoretically and generated experimentally based on a single-phase-only Spatial Light Modulator (SLM). Their specific spatial intensity distributions were further utilized to assist the fabrication of a bowl-shaped Three-Dimensional (3D) micro-trap array via 2 PP with a one-step exposure technique.

Photoacoustic technology is a promising tool to provide morphological and functional information in biomedical research. To enhance the imaging efficiency, the reported photoacoustic probes have been designed coaxially involving complicated optical/acoustic prisms to bypass the opaque piezoelectric layer of ultrasound transducers, but this has led to bulky probes and has hindered the applications in limited space. Though the emergence of transparent piezoelectric materials helps to save effort on the coaxial design, the reported transparent ultrasound transducers were still bulky.

Objective: The purpose of this work is to investigate how the Rho family of GTPases A (RhoA) mediates the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis fibroblast-like synoviocytes (RA-FLS).
Methods: The expression of RhoA in the synovial tissues of RA and Healthy people (Control) was detected using immunohistochemistry methods. The expression of RhoA and hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) is inhibited by small interfering RNAs (siRNAs).
