Dried blood spot (DBS) detection has the advantages of small blood collection, convenience, and reliability, which provides a possibility for large-scale evaluation of arsenic exposure in human population. Herein, a facile Lego-spinner pretreatment device is rationally designed for speciation analysis of arsenic in DBSs by ion chromatography-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (IC-ICP-MS). In the mixing mode of the Lego-spinner, the magnetic stir bar in the centrifuge tube rotates under a magnetic field to assist the dispersive extraction of arsenic species in the DBS with reagents.

Photocatalysts for regeneration of reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) usually work with continuous lighting and electron mediators, which causes impracticability under dark conditions, risk of NADH reoxidation, and complex separation. To solve these problems, we present a new catalyst of tiny Pt nanoparticles photodeposited on chromium-doped zinc gallate (CZGO@Pt). Upon being light-triggered, the photogenerated electrons are stored in the traps of CZGO and then gradually released and transferred by Pt to directly reduce NAD after stoppage of illumination.

Nanozymes with superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity have attracted increasing interest due to their ability to scavenge superoxide anion, the origin of most reactive oxygen species in vivo. However, SOD nanozymes reported thus far have yet to approach the activity of natural enzymes. Here, we report a carbon dot (C-dot) SOD nanozyme with a catalytic activity of over 10,000 U/mg, comparable to that of natural enzymes.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common malignancies that is usually detected late in the clinic. The currently available diagnostic tools for CRC are either invasive or insensitive to early lesions due to the dearth of reliable biomarkers. In this study, we discovered that the extracellular vesicles (EVs) in the faeces of CRC patients can act as a potent biomarker for the non-invasive diagnosis and prognosis of CRC.

Circulating tumor microenvironment-derived extracellular vesicles (cTME-EVs) are gaining considerable traction in cancer research and liquid biopsy. However, the study of cTME-EVs is largely limited by the dearth of a general isolation technique to selectively enrich cTME-EVs from biological fluids for downstream analysis. In this work, we broke through this dilemma by presenting a double-switch pH-low insertion peptide (D-S pHLIP) system to exclusively harvest cTME-EVs from the blood serum of tumor mouse models.

Resolution is always an obstacle to analyzing the fine structure of a spectrum. The problem is particularly serious in the analysis of the near-infrared (NIR) spectra of aqueous solutions, because the spectrum is generally composed of overlapping broad peaks making the understanding of the structures and the interactions notoriously difficult. In this work, wavelet packet transform (WPT) was adopted to enhance the resolution of the NIR spectra of aqueous mixtures.

Urinary monitoring of diseases has gained considerable attention due to its simple and non-invasive sampling. However, urinalysis remains limited by the dearth of reliable urinary biomarkers and the intrinsically enormous heterogeneity of urine samples. Herein, we report, to our knowledge, the first renal-clearable Raman probe encoded by an internal standard (IS)-conjugated reporter that acts as a quantifiable urinary biomarker for reliable monitoring of cancer development, simultaneously eliminating the impact of sample heterogeneity.

A new strategy using non-porous silica (NPS) spheres as the support and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as the porous functional shell for liquid chromatography was developed to ensure the independent effect of the COFs on the separation. As a proof of concept, NPS@TPB-DMTP was prepared for liquid chromatographic analysis using 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene (TPB) and 2,5-dimethoxy-1,4-benzenedicarboxaldehyde (DMTP) as monomers by polymerisation on the surface of NPS. It is a new way of developing COF-based stationary phases, which will be helpful in understanding what effect the COFs will have on separation.

Despite the great potential of microplasma optical emission spectrometry (OES) for on-site analysis, it remains a challenge to achieve the fast, sensitive, batch, and multielement analysis of trace heavy metals in a complex matrix. Herein, a novel ultrasonic nebulization-accelerated gas-phase enrichment (GPE) following in situ microplasma desorption sampling approach is employed for the determination of trace heavy metals by a miniature dielectric barrier discharge (DBD)-OES device. The volatile heavy metal species obtained by hydride generation (HG) can be quickly separated from the complex matrix under the action of ultrasonic nebulization, adsorbed on the surface of the activated carbon electrode tip for GPE, and then in situ desorbed and excited by DBD microplasma to achieve multielement OES analysis.

Quantification of exosomal multi-miRNA can reveal the initiation, progression, and metastasis of tumors, which is conducive to the noninvasive early diagnosis of cancer. However, low-sensitivity and single-plex detection characteristics of traditional methods seriously hinder the accuracy and specificity of exosomal miRNAs in cancer diagnosis. Herein, we design an ultramultiplexing strategy that enables simultaneous and sensitive detection of multiple exosomal miRNAs by nanosatellites (magnetic beads (MBs) @ NaLnF) and catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA) amplification in combination with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to diagnose cancer accurately.

It is challenging to develop a near-infrared (NIR) small molecular photosensitizer for synergistic phototherapy in deep tissues. Herein, first, a heavy-atom-free NIR hemicyanine photosensitizer (BHcy) for 808 nm light-mediated synergistic photodynamic therapy/photothermal therapy (PDT/PTT) anticancer therapy by leveraging the acceptor engineering strategy is reported. This strategy endows BHcy with a more planar and larger π-conjugated structure, resulting in long NIR absorption/emission at 770/915-1200 nm as well as enhanced singlet oxygen ( O ) generation ability and photothermal effect, which is ascribed to the reduced energy levels of excited singlet/triplet states and the promoted intersystem crossing process.

Although smart hydrogels hold great promise in biosensing and biomedical applications, their response to external stimuli is governed by the passive diffusion-dependent substance transport between hydrogels and environments and within the 3D hydrogel matrices, resulting in slow response to biomacromolecules and limiting their extensive applications. Herein, inspired by the respiration systems of organisms, an active strategy to achieve highly efficient biomolecular substance transport through the thermo-stimulated "inhalation-exhalation" cycles of hydrogel matrices is demonstrated. The cryo-structured poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM)-DNA hydrogels, composed of functional DNA-tethered pNIPAM networks and free-water-containing macroporous channels, exhibit thermally triggered fast and reversible shrinking/swelling cycles with high-volume changes, which drive the formation of dynamic water stream to accelerate the intake of external substances and expelling of endogenous substances, thus promoting the functional properties of hydrogel systems.
