Excessive adipocyte differentiation and accumulation contribute to the development of metabolic disorders. Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) plays an essential role in energy homeostasis and is considered an anti-obesity factor; however, elevated serum levels of endogenous GDF15 have been reported in certain individuals with obesity. In this study, to gain a better understanding of this complex relationship between GDF15 levels and obesity, we investigated GDF15 expression and function during adipogenesis.

The presence of cobalt ions (Co) and radionuclides (Co) in industrial and radioactive effluents pose serious threats to environmental ecosystems and human health. This paper presents the synthesis of dual-functional hydroxyapatite (HAp)-incorporated spherical carbon (SC) composite (HAp/SC) towards the selective adsorption of cobalt from wastewater and the utilization of the Co-adsorbed HAp/SC composite (Co- HAp/SC) as an electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we prepared a series of HAp/SC composites by varying HAp weight percentages of 10 %, 20 %, 30 %, 40 %, and 50 %.

Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) have proven to be an effective solution for chemical wastewater treatment, particularly for degradation of organic pollutants, especially dyes. Ozonation is recognized as one of the most prevalent AOPs. Nevertheless, some cases show a lowered efficiency of O utilization which is attributed to its inadequate distribution in the treated water causing low residence time, low mass transfer coefficient as well as shorter half-life.

Rett syndrome (RTT) is a neurological disorder caused by a mutation in the X-linked methyl-CpG binding protein 2 (MECP2), leading to cognitive and motor skill regression. Therapeutic strategies aimed at increasing brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels have been reported; however, BDNF treatment has limitations, including the inability to penetrate the blood-brain barrier, a short half-life, and potential for adverse effects when administered via intrathecal injection, necessitating novel therapeutic approaches. In this study, we focused on the adenosine A receptor (AR), which modulates BDNF and its downstream pathways, and investigated the therapeutic potential of CGS21680, an AR agonist, through in vitro and in vivo studies using R106W RTT model.

Optical resolution photoacoustic imaging of uneven samples without z-scanning is transformative for the fast analysis and diagnosis of diseases. However, current approaches to elongate the depth of field (DOF) typically imply cumbersome postprocessing procedures, bulky optical element ensembles, or substantial excitation beam side lobes. Metasurface technology allows for the phase modulation of light and the miniaturization of imaging systems to wavelength-size thickness.

A metamaterial absorber capable of swiftly altering its electromagnetic response in the microwave range offers adaptability to changing environments, such as tunable stealth capabilities. Inspired by the chameleon's ability to change color through the structural transformation of photonic lattice crystals, which shift the bandgaps of reflection and transmission of visible light, we designed a crisscross structure that transforms from an expanded to a collapsed form. This transformation enables a switch between broadband absorption and peak transmission in the microwave range (4 to 18 gigahertz).
