The neurodegenerative disease Machado-Joseph disease (MJD), also known as spinocerebellar ataxin-3, affects neurons of the brain and spinal cord, disrupting control of the movement of muscles. We have successfully established the first transgenic zebrafish () model of MJD by expressing human ataxin-3 protein containing either 23 glutamines (23Q, wild-type) or 84Q (MJD-causing) within neurons. Phenotypic characterization of the zebrafish (male and female) revealed that the ataxin-3-84Q zebrafish have decreased survival compared with ataxin-3-23Q and develop ataxin-3 neuropathology, ataxin-3 cleavage fragments and motor impairment.

We report the histopathological findings in 3 patients where injections of botulinum toxin were used prior to strabismus surgery. In all cases we found evidence of permanent extraocular muscle atrophy and fibrosis.

50-year-old female presented with abdominal pain 9days post sleeve gastrectomy and was found to have acute renal infarction caused by paradoxical emboli through patent foramen ovale (PFO) as a cause of the renal infarction. Renal infarctions caused by paradoxical embolism are rare and have not been previously reported following surgery, bariatric surgery in particular. This report describes presentation, work up and management of a patient with renal infarct following bariatric surgery.

We report a previously undescribed inflammatory lesion consisting of deposition of activated complement (C3d and C9neo) in association with major histocompatibility complex type II (MHC2)-positive activated microglia in choroid plexus villi exhibiting classical fibrous thickening of the pericapillary filtration membrane. The proportion of villi affected ranged from 5% to 90% in 56 adult subjects with diseases of the CNS and 11 subjects with no preexisting disease of the CNS.
