Background: The causal pathway between complications after pancreatic cancer resection and impaired long-term survival remains unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of complications after pancreatic cancer resection on disease-free interval and overall survival, with adjuvant chemotherapy as a mediator.
Methods: This observational study included all patients undergoing pancreatic cancer resection in the Netherlands (2014-2017).

Objective: To evaluate the performance of published fistula risk models by external validation, and to identify independent risk factors for postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF).
Background: Multiple risk models have been developed to predict POPF after pancreatoduodenectomy. External validation in high-quality prospective cohorts is, however, lacking or only performed for individual models.

We performed bone scintigraphy in 6 patients with suspected cardiac amyloidosis. To evaluate feasibility of left ventricle function analysis, we additionally performed electrocardiographically gated SPECT acquisition. The cardiac-gated SPECT data confirmed adequate tracer uptake for automatic myocardial contour determination.

We investigated the non-operative management of trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis with a three-dimensional (3-D) printed patient-customized brace compared with a conventional plaster brace. Fifty-two patients with symptomatic trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis were enrolled in a 9-week crossover study, which was designed as a randomized controlled trial of two periods of 4-week brace therapies. The primary outcome was patient satisfaction measured with the Dutch version of the Quebec User Evaluation of Satisfaction with Assistive Technology questionnaire survey.

Background: Trends of surgical and non-surgical complications among the old, older and oldest patients after colorectal cancer (CRC) surgery could help to identify the best target outcome to further improve postoperative outcome.
Materials And Methods: All consecutive patients ≥70 years receiving curative elective CRC resection between 2011 and 2019 in The Netherlands were included. Baseline variables and postoperative complications were prospectively collected by the Dutch ColoRectal audit (DCRA).

New treatment strategies have improved survival of metastatic colorectal cancer in trials. However, it is not clear whether older patients benefit from these novel therapies, as they are often not included in pivotal trials. Therefore, we investigated treatment patterns and overall survival over time in older patients with metastatic colorectal cancer in a population-based study.

Background: Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a major burden for hospitals globally. However, in the Netherlands, the MRSA prevalence is relatively low due to the 'search and destroy' policy. Routine multiple-locus variable-number of tandem repeat analysis (MLVA) of MRSA isolates supports outbreak detection.

Background And Objective: Low-molecular-weight heparins are routinely administered to patients in the intensive care unit to prevent venous thromboembolisms. There is considerable evidence that low-molecular-weight heparin doses should be personalised based on anti-Xa levels, but pharmacokinetic data in intensive care unit patients are lacking. This study aimed to characterise the pharmacokinetics and associated variability of the low-molecular-weight heparin nadroparin in critically ill patients.

Background: Physical exercise in cancer patients is a promising intervention to improve cognition and increase brain volume, including hippocampal volume. We investigated whether a 6-month exercise intervention primarily impacts total hippocampal volume and additionally hippocampal subfield volumes, cortical thickness and grey matter volume in previously physically inactive breast cancer patients. Furthermore, we evaluated associations with verbal memory.

Introduction: Double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenges are an important tool in diagnosing food allergies. PRACTALL recommends a dose-escalation schedule of 3-3,000 mg of food protein and a top dose of at least 2,000 mg to avoid false-negative results. This retrospective observational study tests the thresholds and feasibility using a previously published gingerbread matrix.

Active surveillance may be a safe and effective treatment in oesophageal cancer patients with a clinically complete response after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT). In the NOSANO-study we gained insight in patients' motive to opt for either an experimental treatment called active surveillance or for standard immediate surgery. Both qualitative and quantitative analyses methods were used.

We aimed to identify determinants of delirium, including the Clinical Frailty Scale, in hospitalized older patients with COVID-19. Furthermore, we aimed to study the association of delirium independent of frailty with in-hospital outcomes in older COVID-19 patients.
