We present 2 cases that demonstrate photopenia in peripheral areas on whole-body PET/CT imaging with F-FDG as a sign of absent perfusion with severe short-term complications. The scan of the first patient shows photopenia in the right ankle and foot, resulting from compartment syndrome, caused by hemolytic group A streptococcus bacteremia with endocarditis and septic emboli, necessitating lower leg amputation. The scan of the second patient shows photopenia in the transverse colon, resulting from mesenteric venous thrombosis caused by polycythemia vera, leading to necrosis and perforation of the transverse colon, necessitating transverse and right hemicolectomy.

Chronic low-grade inflammation in type 1 diabetes (T1D) might increase hepcidin synthesis, possibly resulting in functional iron deficiency (FID). We hypothesized that in T1D children with FID, hepcidin concentrations are increased compared to those with normal iron status and those with absolute iron deficiency (AID). We evaluated hepcidin concentrations in T1D children in relation to iron status, and investigated whether hepcidin is useful in assessing FID.

Introduction: Some scaphoid fractures become visible on radiographs weeks after a trauma which makes normal radiographs directly after trauma unreliable. Untreated scaphoid fractures can lead to scaphoid non-union progressing to osteoarthritis. Therefore, the general treatment for patients with a clinically suspected scaphoid fracture and normal initial radiographs is immobilisation with below-elbow cast for 2 weeks.

Background: Previous research has demonstrated that patients leaving the emergency department (ED) have poor recall and understanding of their discharge information. The teach-back method is an easy technique that can be used to check, and if necessary correct, inaccurate recall. In our study, we aimed to determine the direct and short-term impact of teach-back as well as feasibility for routine use in the ED.

Background: Improving communication and information services for people receiving a total joint (knee or hip) arthroplasty (TJA) depends on the differences in patient communication needs and personal characteristics.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to further examine individual differences in TJA patient preferences regarding communication and information provision.
Methods: Nineteen patients participated in generative research, which meant they actively reflected on their TJA experiences and communication preferences through creative exercises (e.

Background: Although the benefits of antithrombotic drugs are indisputable to reduce thrombotic events, they carry a high risk of compromising patient safety. No previous studies investigated the implementation and (cost-) effectiveness of a hospital-based multidisciplinary antithrombotic team on bleeding and thrombotic outcomes. The primary aim of this study was to compare the proportion of patients with a composite end point consisting of one or more bleeding episodes or one or more thrombotic event from hospitalization until three months after hospitalization.

Aims: Short, bone-conserving femoral components are increasingly used in total hip arthroplasty (THA). They are expected to allow tissue-conserving implantation and to render future revision surgery more straightforward but the long-term data on such components is limited. One such component is the global tissue-sparing (GTS) stem.

Background: Last decades there is an increased tendency of performing surgery on displaced distal radius fractures. However, it is unclear whether this affects the development of osteoarthritis. This study aims to determine the relation between anatomical position, radiological osteoarthritis and functional outcome of the elderly wrist, 10-15 years after a distal radius fracture.

Epidural anesthesia has been considered the gold standard for perioperative analgesia, but the implementation of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols and a shift from open to laparoscopic surgery have diminished the advantage of epidural anesthesia. The authors summarize data from two newer meta-analyses and discuss the consequences for the role of epidural anesthesia (EA) in the perioperative setting. These meta-analyses enabled to distinguish between pre- and post-ERAS outcomes.

Background: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) often provide accurate estimates of the internal validity of an intervention but lack information on external validity (generalizability). We conducted an RCT on the effectiveness of a self-management intervention among patients with lymphoma in a population-based setting.
Objective: The objectives of the current study were to describe the proportion of RCT participants compared to all patients invited to participate, and compare sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of RCT participants with all respondents, all patients invited to participate, and all patients selected from the Netherlands Cancer Registry (NCR) to determine the reach of the intervention.

Background: Pancreatic cancer has a very poor prognosis. Best practices for the use of chemotherapy, enzyme replacement therapy, and biliary drainage have been identified but their implementation in daily clinical practice is often suboptimal. We hypothesized that a nationwide program to enhance implementation of these best practices in pancreatic cancer care would improve survival and quality of life.

Background And Aim: Patient decision aids for oncological treatment options, provide information on the effect on recurrence rates and/or survival benefit, and on side-effects and/or burden of different treatment options. However, often uncertainty exists around the probability estimates for recurrence/survival and side-effects which is too relevant to be ignored. Evidence is lacking on the best way to communicate these uncertainties.

Rituximab-containing chemotherapy remains a viable frontline treatment option for patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) in the era of novel agents. However, its effectiveness in the second-line setting-in relation to previous rituximab exposure in first-line-has hardly been evaluated in a population-based setting. Therefore, in this comprehensive, population-based study, we assessed the impact of first-line treatment with rituximab-containing chemotherapy on the effectiveness of second-line treatment with rituximab-containing chemotherapy.
