Elevated threat appraisal is a postulated neurodevelopmental mechanism of anxiety disorders. However, laboratory-assessed threat appraisals are task-specific and subject to measurement error. We utilized latent variable analysis to integrate youth's self-reported threat appraisals across different experimental tasks; we next examined associations with pediatric anxiety as well as behavioral and psychophysiological task indices.

Some but not other studies on oxytocin for schizophrenia, particularly those using a higher dose, indicate that oxytocin improves negative symptoms of schizophrenia. We performed an add-on randomized controlled trial to examine the effect of high-dose oxytocin, social skills training, and their combination in the treatment of negative symptoms and social dysfunction in schizophrenia. Fifty-one subjects with schizophrenia were randomized, employing a two-by-two design: intranasal oxytocin (24 IU X3/day) or placebo, and social skills training or supportive psychotherapy, for 3 weeks.

Clinical misdiagnosis between cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) and basal cell carcinoma (BCC) affects treatment plans. We report a tissue sampling approach with molecular biopsy using electroporation. This method, coined electroporation-based biopsy (e-biopsy), enables nondestructive nonthermal permeabilization of cells in the skin for vacuum-assisted extraction of biomolecules.

Gene expression data holds the potential to shed light on multiple biological processes at once. However, data analysis methods for single cell sequencing mostly focus on finding cell clusters or the principal progression line of the data. Data analysis for spatial transcriptomics mostly addresses clustering and finding spatially variable genes.

E-waste challenges of generative artificial intelligence.

Nat Comput Sci

November 2024

Key Lab of Urban Environment and Health, Institute of Urban Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xiamen, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Generative artificial intelligence (GAI) demands significant computational resources, leading to an underreported issue of electronic waste (e-waste) generated from its use, especially concerning large language models.
  • Research indicates that e-waste related to GAI could accumulate between 1.2 to 5.0 million tons from 2020 to 2030 due to factors like geopolitical semiconductor import restrictions and frequent server replacements for cost efficiency.
  • Adopting circular economy strategies can significantly mitigate e-waste, potentially reducing it by 16-86%, highlighting the need for effective e-waste management as GAI technologies continue to advance.

The post ICU trajectory: Post acute and post ICU nutritional care.

Clin Nutr ESPEN

December 2024

Herzlia Medical Center ICU, Herzlia Israel and Reichman University, Herzlia, Israel. Electronic address:

ICU survivors are growing but a persistent physical and mental disability may occur. The patients discharged from ICU are frequently malnourished and their medical nutritional support is impaired by oral intake limitation due to respiratory support such as non invasive ventilation or high flow nasal cannula oxygen therapy, dysphagia and difficulties to determine energy and protein targets. ICU acquired weakness must be recognized and could be minimized by better energy intake determined by indirect calorimetry, optimal protein intake and physical activity.

The digital divide, particularly within the context of Artificial Intelligence (AI) sport podcasts, presents significant behavioral and psychosocial challenges for student engagement. This study examines the disparities in access to and proficiency with Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) across different demographic groups, focusing on gender, age, and religious level. The advent of the commercial web has heightened the significance of these divides, as the first-level digital divide concerns access to the internet, while the second-level digital divide pertains to the ability to use technology proficiently.

Dishonest behaviours such as tax evasion impose significant societal costs. Ex ante honesty oaths-commitments to honesty before action-have been proposed as interventions to counteract dishonest behaviour, but the heterogeneity in findings across operationalizations calls their effectiveness into question. We tested 21 honesty oaths (including a baseline oath)-proposed, evaluated and selected by 44 expert researchers-and a no-oath condition in a megastudy involving 21,506 UK and US participants from Prolific.

Deep genetic substructure within bonobos.

Curr Biol

November 2024

Department of Evolutionary Genetics, Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, 04103 Leipzig, Germany; UCL Genetics Institute, Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment, University College London, London WC1E 6BT, UK. Electronic address:

Establishing the genetic and geographic structure of populations is fundamental, both to understand their evolutionary past and preserve their future. Nevertheless, the patterns of genetic population structure are unknown for most endangered species. This is the case for bonobos (Pan paniscus), which, together with chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), are humans' closest living relatives.

Attachment theory is one of the most comprehensive frameworks in social and developmental psychology. It describes how selective, enduring emotional bonds between infants and their caregivers are formed and maintained throughout life. These attachment bonds exhibit distinct characteristics that are intimately tied to fundamental aspects of mammalian life, including pregnancy, birth, lactation, and infant brain development.

Texture and visual memory span capacities are dissociable.

Acta Psychol (Amst)

October 2024

Baruch Ivcher School of Psychology, Reichman University, Herzliya, Israel; Department of Psychology, Palo Alto University, Palo Alto, CA, USA. Electronic address:

Experiencing and remembering objects using the sense of touch is an important aspect of our interactions with our environment, but the cognitive processes of long-term tactile memory for surface textures have not previously been studied. We administered a novel tactile texture memory span task, which required participants to identify new textures among a constantly increasing set of previously experienced stimuli. Performance on that task was compared to a span task employing novel visual objects.

Using mobile eye-tracking to evaluate gaze behavior during a speech in pediatric anxiety disorders.

J Affect Disord

January 2025

Emotion and Development Branch, National Institute of Mental Health, Bethesda, MD, United States of America; Department of Psychology, Education and Child Studies, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Electronic address:

Background: Altered gaze in social settings is a hallmark of social anxiety; however, little research directly examines gaze in anxiety-provoking contexts among youth with anxiety disorders, limiting mechanistic insight into pediatric anxiety. The present study leveraged mobile eye-tracking technology to examine gaze behavior during a naturalistic stressor in a clinical developmental sample.

Methods: Sixty-one youth (ages 8-17 years; 28 with anxiety disorders, 33 non-anxious controls) completed a naturalistic social stress task (public speaking in front of a videotaped classroom audience) while wearing eye-tracking glasses.

Article Synopsis
  • Previous research indicates that how well mothers understand their children's mental states (mind-mindedness) positively influences children's social development and attachment.* -
  • In a study with 62 mothers and their infants, findings showed that higher infant oxytocin levels were linked to mothers' appropriate mind-related comments and that mothers with depression used fewer of these comments.* -
  • An experiment administering nasal oxytocin to the same mothers didn't significantly change mind-mindedness levels, suggesting the need for further research on how oxytocin may affect this cognitive style in parenting.*
