Background: The CHADS-VAS score is used to predict the risk of thromboembolic complications in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). We hypothesized that the CHADS-VAS score can be used to predict mortality in patients undergoing coronary angiography.

Methods And Results: This was a prospective study of 990 patients undergoing coronary angiography.

Background: A wide range of surgical techniques has been described for breast conservation treatment (Oncoplasty) based on breast size and shape, as well as tumor size and location. However, there is a lack of standardization regarding the indications for oncoplastic reconstruction. This study aims to identify the presurgical parameters associated with poor cosmetic outcomes post-breast conserving treatment.

Three-Year Outcomes of a Schlemm Canal Microstent (Hydrus Microstent) with Concomitant Phacoemulsification in Open-Angle Glaucoma.

Ophthalmol Glaucoma

March 2023

Montreal Glaucoma Institute and Bellevue Ophthalmology Clinics, Montreal, Quebec, Canada; Department of Ophthalmology, University of Montreal, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Electronic address:

Purpose: HORIZON trials have reported the medium- and long-term outcomes of the Hydrus microstent. However, outside of randomized clinical trials, outcomes beyond 24 months have not been previously reported. Here, we examine the 3-year outcomes of the Hydrus microstent with cataract surgery outside of a randomized clinical trial setting.

In the field of tissue engineering, evaluating newly formed vascular networks is considered a fundamental step in deciphering the processes underlying tissue development. Several common modalities exist to study vessel network formation and function. However, a proper methodology that allows through three-dimensional visualization of neovessels in a reproducible manner is required.

Objective: Feasibility of diagnosis of pneumothorax using handheld ultrasound by non-radiologists shows inconsistent results. The aim of this study is to evaluate the feasibility and accuracy of portable ultrasound for immediate diagnosis of pneumothorax by general surgery residents who underwent short training.

Methods: Patients who presented to the emergency department of a university hospital with suspected pneumothorax between 10/2018 and 12/2019 were included in the study.

Interdigitation and Ellipsoid Zones Disruption Correlate with Visual Outcomes among Treatment-Naive Patients with Diabetic Macular Edema.

Ophthalmic Res

December 2021

Department of Ophthalmology, Edith Wolfson Medical Center, Holon, Israel and Sackler School of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel,

Introduction: We have recently shown that defects in interdigitation and ellipsoid zones (IZ and EZ) can predict response to anti-VEGF therapy in a small group of treatment-naive diabetic macular edema (DME) patients. The aim of the current study is to further evaluate this association in a larger study group of patients over a longer follow-up time.

Methods: Thirty eyes of 30 treatment-naive DME patients were analyzed in this retrospective study.

Purpose: The necessity of routine preoperative esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) and upper gastrointestinal series (UGIS) in the evaluation of hiatal hernia (HH) among bariatric surgery candidates is controversial since most are detected during surgery, regardless of the preoperative work-up. The aim is to determine the accuracy of preoperative EGD and UGIS for HH diagnosis among bariatric surgery candidates.

Material And Methods: The records of bariatric surgery patients between 2011 and 2015 were reviewed.

A Potentially Malignant Giant Esophageal Paraganglioma.

Ann Thorac Surg

December 2019

Department of Thoracic Surgery, Kaplan Medical Center, Rehovot and The Hebrew University School of Medicine, Jerusalem, Israel. Electronic address:

Paragangliomas are rare neuroendocrine tumors derived from extraadrenal autonomic paraganglia, which may secrete catecholamines. They are potentially metastatic and require very long-term follow-up. Esophageal paragangliomas are extremely rare and present a diagnostic challenge.

Aims: Abbreviations are common in the medical record. Their inappropriate use may ultimately lead to patient harm, yet little is known regarding the extent of their use and their comprehension. Our aim was to assess the extent of their use, their comprehension and physicians' attitudes towards them, using ophthalmology consults in a tertiary hospital as a model.

Background: Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) is an effective procedure in the management of morbid obesity with variations in outcome, which are technique dependent. Anastomotic stricture remains an important complication. The aim of this study was to assess the long-term outcome of patients undergoing either a linear-stapled anastomosis (LSA) or circular-stapled anastomosis (CSA) with an emphasis on postoperative stricture formation and excess body weight loss (EBWL).

Asian Indians (AIs) have a higher prevalence and a more aggressive form of coronary artery disease (CAD), and it has been suggested that hypoadiponectinemia may have a role in this accelerated CAD. The present study was undertaken to determine the extent and severity of angiographic findings in 2 groups of CAD patients matched for age and sex, AIs (n = 29) vs whites (n = 30), and to elucidate the potential relationship between adiponectin (total and high-molecular weight [HMW] form) and the severity and extent of coronary angiographic findings in both groups. Angiographic findings were assessed using the modified Gensini index; and 2 scores, scores 1 and 2, were used to assess the severity and extent.

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss is a rarely reported manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This condition has been most frequently seen in individuals with concomitant anticardiolipin antibody (ACL) syndrome, although a direct causal relationship remains unconfirmed.
