Clinical characteristics of autism spectrum disorder in Israel: impact of ethnic and social diversities.

Despite the increased global prevalence and recognition of autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), it is still scarcely reported in the Arab world. Though Israel has a higher prevalence of ASD, a previous national survey of patients diagnosed between 1972 and 2004, demonstrated that 98% of them were of Jewish ancestry. The disproportional low number of Arab children with ASD in Israel is unclear but may reflect lower awareness and cultural bias.

Methods: A case-control study was conducted among 414 pregnant Arab women who were referred by a family physician or a perinatologist to genetic counseling services between 2008 and 2011. Data was collected using interviews, with both groups 'users' and 'non-users' of genetic counseling, based on a structured questionnaire including demographic, socio-economic, medical and cultural variables.

Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) is an autosomal recessive disease that is widely spread in the populations of the Mediterranean region. It is characterized by recurrent fever and inflammatory attacks. A total of 1700 suspected patients, belonging to various communities in Israel: Jews (Ashkenazi and non-Ashkenazi), Arabs (Muslims and Christians) and Druze, was subjected to examination for FMF mutation screening.

An independent prediction of the effect of dissolved organic matter on the transport of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

The transport of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in porous media in the presence of dissolved organic matter (DOM) was predicted with a transport bicontinuum model using independently obtained relationships to derive transport parameters for describing the effect of PAH binding to the DOM. The sorption constants of PAHs to soil and their binding constants to DOM were derived from basic correlations with K(ow) (indicator of hydrophobicity). The kinetic (rate) constants were derived from previously published correlations with K(p) (sorption constant).
