Background: SARS-CoV-2 has been associated with a higher proportion of asymptomatic infections and lower mortality in sub-Saharan Africa than high-income countries. However, there is currently a lack of data on cellular immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 in people living in Africa compared with people in high-income regions of the world. We aimed to assess geographical variation in peripheral and mucosal immune responses.

The receptor tyrosine kinase AXL promotes tumor progression, metastasis, and therapy resistance through the induction of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Here, we found that activation of AXL resulted in the phosphorylation of TANK-binding kinase 1 (TBK1) and the downstream activation of AKT3 and Snail, a transcription factor critical for EMT. Mechanistically, we showed that TBK1 directly bound to and phosphorylated AKT3 in a manner dependent on the multiprotein complex mTORC1.

6-hydroxy-L-nicotine (6HLN) is a nicotine (NIC) derivative with proven therapeutic potential in neurodegenerative disorders. Here, the impact of 6HLN on cell growth, migratory behavior, and inflammatory status of three different cancer cell lines (A549, MCF7, and U87) and two normal cell lines (16HBE14o and MCF10A) was investigated. In silico analyses were conducted to evaluate the binding affinity of 6HLN to nicotinic receptors (nAChRs) containing α9 and α5 subunits.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains a significant global health burden, necessitating a thorough understanding of prognostic and predictive factors to enhance patient outcomes. This systematic review aims to comprehensively evaluate prognostic and predictive determinants in CRC, encompassing both traditional and emerging biomarkers. A systematic search of major electronic databases was conducted to identify relevant studies published from 1995 up to 2024.

In addition to the course of over 20 years of cucurbit-7-uril (CB[7]) in the pharmaceutical industry, the present study brings together the most recent observations from the perspective of ultrasensitive Raman spectroscopy and Density Functional Theory (DFT) related to the interaction of this molecule with atenolol (Ate) enantiomers during the formation of these host-guest complexes. Quantum chemistry calculations based on DFT were first used to understand the interaction geometry between CB[7] and Ate. These results were further confirmed by ultrasensitive vibrational spectroscopy.

Objective: In our experimental study, we evaluated the influence of treatment with atorvastatin on the antioxidant activity of intracellular and extracellular systems factors, homocysteine levels (Hcy), and lipid profiles in obese and diabetic rats.
Method: Twenty-one male Wistar rats, aged 6 months, 450-550 g, were allocated into three groups. From the beginning of the study, the first group (G-I, control) received only standard food, while the second and third groups (G II-obese, G III-diabetic) were administered a high-fat diet (HFD) with 2% cholesterol.

Gastric cancer continues to be a significant issue for public health, marked by its widespread occurrence and high mortality rates, even as the incidence of the disease shows a declining trend. The liver is the primary site for metastatic spread, with the peritoneum, lungs, and bones also being common targets. With the advent of biologic treatments and the introduction of immunotherapy for patients with metastatic conditions, the options to treat metastatic gastric cancer have expanded.

Liposomes, small bilayer phospholipid-containing vesicles, are frequently used to ensure slow drug release for a prolonged and improved therapeutic effect. Nevertheless, current findings on the membrane affinity and permeability of the anticancer agent 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) are confounding, which leads to a lack of a clear understanding of how lipid composition impacts the distribution of 5-FU within liposomal structures and its delivery. In the current work, we report a comprehensive coarse-grained molecular dynamics (CGMD) investigation on the influence of cholesterol (CHOL) and the cationic lipid 1,2-dioleoyl-3-trimethylammonium-propane (DOTAP) on the partitioning of 5-FU in 1,2-dipalmitoyl--glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC) double-bilayer systems, as well as its in vitro release from liposomes with identical lipid compositions.

The aim of this study was to determine whether the presence and extent of lymphovascular invasion (LVI) is prognostic in surgical stage I cervical squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). All available tumour slides and/or paraffin blocks from 426 patients with stage I cervical SCC treated surgically with curative intent were collected from 18 institutions and retrospectively analysed. Presence and extent of LVI (focal <5 spaces, extensive ≥5 spaces) were assessed on scanning magnification in large haematoxylin and eosin slide sets in 366 cases.

Introduction: Hypovolaemia is presumed to be a common risk factor of postinduction hypotension (PIH), despite worldwide improvement in preoperative volume optimization. Correct assessment of fluid status in patients undergoing general anaesthesia remains a major challenge for anaesthesiologists. Bioimpedance analysis (BIA) is a sensitive method that allows objective assessment of patient fluid status as it can detect subclinical changes.

Background: Patients with advanced cancer experience many symptoms and needs requiring a Palliative Care Intervention (PCI). Identifying gaps between needs for PCIs and experienced delivery may improve health care, furthermore the association of gaps with quality indicators (QI). The multicentre Romanian (RO)-Swiss (CH) reality map study implemented a novel protocol based on needs concepts and culturally adapted quality indicators (QI).

Background: Mitral annulus calcification is a chronic degenerative condition affecting the fibrous base of the mitral valve. Historically viewed as an age-related phenomenon, recent studies suggest it is driven by active mechanisms involving systemic inflammation, hemodynamic stress, abnormal calcium-phosphorus metabolism, and lipid accumulation. Despite often being asymptomatic and incidentally detected, its clinical relevance stems from its strong association with increased cardiovascular disease risk, higher cardiovascular mortality, and elevated overall mortality.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the sixth most common cancer in men and is often asymptomatic, leading to incidental detection in advanced disease stages that are associated with aggressive histology and poorer outcomes. Various cancer biomarkers are found in urine samples from patients with RCC. In this study, we propose to investigate the use of Attenuated Total Reflection-Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) on dried urine samples for distinguishing RCC.

Background: Machine learning models learn about general behavior from data by finding the relationships between features. Our purpose was to develop a predictive model to identify and predict which subset of colorectal cancer patients are more likely to experience chemotherapy-induced toxicity and to determine the specific attributes that influence the presence of treatment-related side effects.
Methods: The predictor was general toxicity, and for the construction of our data training, we selected 95 characteristics that represent the health state of 74 patients prior to their first round of chemotherapy.

Ovarian cancer is one of the most frequent malignancies in women. The treatment landscape underwent significant changes as new agents were introduced in ovarian cancer management over the last decade. We present two cases of long responses to Olaparib in BRCA (BReast CAncer gene) mutant ovarian cancer patients.

Cognitive decline is a frequent complaint in healthy controls and neurological patients, regardless of the underlying pathology. Whilst cognitive impairment can be easily diagnosed in the more advanced stages of neurodegenerative diseases, early detection can be challenging. This is mainly the consequence of the incomplete understanding of the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms.

Ovarian cancer, including tubal and peritoneal cancer, is the third most common gynecological cancer and the leading cause of death from gynecological malignancies in developed countries. This study explores the prognostic value of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in determining the optimal duration of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) for advanced ovarian cancer. It also investigates the correlation between NLR dynamics and the KELIM score, a chemosensitivity marker, to enhance individualized therapeutic strategies.
