Background: The incidence of melanoma in situ (MIS) is increasing even more rapidly than the incidence of cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM). No previous studies have in detail investigated the survival in individuals diagnosed with MIS compared to the general population.
Methods: This population-based study included individuals with MIS diagnosed in Sweden between 2001 and 2010 and randomly selected MIS-free comparators matched on age, sex and county of residence.

Introduction: Recent studies suggest an overrepresentation of promoter methylated tumors in females with wt glioblastoma (GBM) compared to males, with a subsequent better response to alkylating treatment.
Methods: To reveal sex-bound associations that may have gone unnoticed in the original analysis, we re-analyzed two previously published clinical cohorts. One was the multicenter Nordic trial of elderly patients with GBM, randomizing patients into three different treatment arms, including 203 cases with known promoter methylation status.

Previous studies have demonstrated an anti-tumoral effect of beta-adrenergic blocking agents on cutaneous melanoma (CM). The aim of this study was to investigate if beta-adrenergic blocking agents have an impact on survival in Swedish patients with melanoma. A population-based retrospective registry study including all patients diagnosed with a primary invasive melanoma between 2009 and 2013 was performed.

Previous studies in a rat model of Sephadex induced lung inflammation showed that 4-Thiouridine (4SU), a thiol substituted nucleoside, was very effective in reducing edema, leukocyte influx and TNF levels in bronchoalvelolar lavage fluid. However, little is known about the factors and mechanisms underlying these effects. In the present study, we have used two separate mouse models of chronic inflammation, a model of dextran sulphate sodium (DSS) induced colitis and a model of antigen induced arthritis, to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of 4-thiouridine.

Background: The incidence of cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) continues to increase in most countries worldwide and the majority are diagnosed with thin tumours (≤ 1 mm).
Objectives: The aim of the present study was to investigate the melanoma-specific survival (MSS) as well as conditional MSS (CMSS) in patients with thin CMM in Sweden.
Patients And Methods: Clinical and histological parameters were obtained from the Swedish Melanoma Registry for patients diagnosed with thin CMM between 1990 and 2017.

Standard treatment for glioblastoma (GBM) patients is surgery and radiochemotherapy (RCT) with temozolomide (TMZ). TMZ is a substrate for ABCB1, a transmembrane drug transporter. It has been suggested that survival for GBM patients receiving TMZ is influenced by different single-nucleotide variants (SNV) of ABCB1.

Introduction: Our primary objective was to test the hypothesis that human epididymal protein 4 (HE4) and risk of ovarian malignancy index outperform the CA 125 and risk of malignancy index tests in categorizing a pelvic mass into high or low risk of malignancy in a Swedish population. Furthermore, cut-off values needed to be defined for HE4 and ROMA in premenopausal and postmenopausal women prior to their introduction to clinical practice. A third objective was to investigate the correlation between HE4 levels in serum and urine.

Background: Sentinel lymph node (SLN) metastasis in patients with thin melanomas (≤1 mm) is uncommon but adverse prognostic factors may indicate an increased risk. We sought to determine how often SLN biopsy (SLNB) was performed in patients with thin melanomas, establish the frequency of SLN metastasis and evaluate the predictive value of ulceration, tumor mitotic rate, and thickness for SLN involvement.
Methods: Melanoma patients with a Breslow thickness greater than or equal to 0.

We describe an unusual case of a biclonal nodal plasma cell dyscrasia, presenting with a vasculitic rash, end-organ damage, and cytopenias. Serum protein electrophoresis demonstrated a biclonal kappa-restricted paraprotein, with a negative skeletal survey and no bone marrow disease. Fluorodeoxyglucose-PET-CT (FDG-PET-CT) revealed nodal involvement, which was not appreciable clinically, and facilitated biopsy, confirming the diagnosis of a nodal plasmacytoma.

Introduction: A pilot study of temozolomide (TMZ) given before radiotherapy (RT) for anaplastic astrocytoma (AA) and glioblastoma (GBM) resulted in prolonged survival compared to historical controls receiving RT alone. We therefore investigated neoadjuvant TMZ (NeoTMZ) in a randomized trial. During enrollment, concomitant and adjuvant radio-chemotherapy with TMZ became standard treatment.

Aims: It is important to predict response to treatment with temozolomide (TMZ) in glioblastoma (GBM) patients. Both MGMT protein expression and MGMT promoter methylation status have been reported to predict the response to TMZ. We investigated the prognostic value of quantified MGMT protein levels in tumour cells and the prognostic importance of combining information of MGMT protein level and MGMT promoter methylation status.

PROX1 is a transcription factor with an essential role in embryonic development and determination of cell fate. In addition, PROX1 has been ascribed suppressive as well as oncogenic roles in several human cancers, including brain tumors. In this study we explored the correlation between PROX1 expression and patient survival in high-grade astrocytomas.

Background: In published radiotherapy trials, the failure rate in the control arm among patients with one to three positive nodes is high compared with that seen with modern adjuvant treatments. Therefore, the generalizability of the results has been questioned. The aim of the present study was to compare relative survival in breast cancer patients between two Swedish regions with screening mammography programs and adjuvant treatment guidelines similar with the exception of the indication of radiotherapy for patients with one to three positive nodes.
