Chondroprotective effects of a new glucosamine combination in rats: Gene expression, biochemical and histopathological evaluation.

Aims: This study investigates the effect of a new combination of glucosamine hydrochloride, chondroitin sulfate, methylsulfonylmethane, Harpagophytum procumbens root extract (standardized to 3% harpagoside) and bromelain extract (GCMHB) on formalin-induced damage to cartilage tissue in the rat knee joint and evaluates this combination in comparison with another combination of glucosamine hydrochloride, chondroitin sulfate and methylsulfonylmethane (GKM).

Materials And Methods: Animals in the control group were injected with formalin into the knee joint (FCG). Animals in the GCMHB-500 group were given 500mg/kg GCMHB+formalin, and those in the GKM-500 group were given 500mg/kg GKM+formalin.

Effectiveness of posaconazole in recalcitrant fungal keratitis resistant to conventional antifungal drugs.

Purpose. To present the success of posaconazole in two cases with recalcitrant fugal keratitis that were resistant to conventional antifungal drugs. Method.

Bilateral persistent pupillary membrane with tetralogy of fallot: a case report and review of the literature.

Case Report. A 15-year-old boy presented to the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Education and Research Hospital with the complain of bilateral vision blurring associated with severe glare and photophobia. On ophthalmological examination, uncorrected visual acuity was 20/200 in the right eye and 20/100 in the left eye, and there was no improvement with pinhole testing.

The effects of topical antiglaucoma drugs as monotherapy on the ocular surface: a prospective study.

Purpose. The aim was to compare the effects of antiglaucoma eye drops on the tear functions and ocular surface. Method.

Automated ribotyping and antibiotic resistance determining of Bacillus spp from conjunctiva of diabetic patients.

Objective(s): We aimed to characterize the phenotype and genotype of Bacillus spp isolated from diabetic patients' eyes, by studying the drug sensitivity patterns with a disc-diffusion method.

Materials And Methods: Fifty eyes of 25 patients with type II diabetes mellitus, with at least 10 years of diabetes history, were included in the study. We analyzed the eyes for the presence of Bacillus spp.

The role of diminishing appetite and serum nesfatin-1 level in patients with burn wound infection.

Background: The burn wound represents a susceptible site for opportunistic colonization by organisms of endogenous and exogenous origin. Diminishing appetite is known to occur in patients with burn infection, yet its underlying reason is not fully understood. We have examined the levels of nesfatin 1, a protein that we consider to be a potential new treatment target for the solution of appetite and nutrition problem in patients with burn infection.

The effects of dexamethasone and levobupivacaine on postoperative pain in modified radiofrequency assisted uvulopalatoplasty (MRAUP) surgery.

The objective of this prospective, randomized study was to evaluate the effect of pre-emptive local infiltration of lidocaine, lidocaine plus dexamethasone, levobupivacaine and levobupivacaine plus dexamethasone on postoperative pain in Modified Radiofrequency Assisted Uvulopalatoplasty (MRAUP) cases. Sixty adult patients (44 males and 16 females) aged 32-51 years with simple snoring were divided into four groups. The anesthesia of the patients in the first group was achieved with lidocaine HCl, in the second group, with lidocaine HCl and dexamethasone sodium phosphate, in the third group, with levobupivacaine, and in the fourth group, levobupivacaine and dexamethasone sodium phosphate.

Mast cells numbers and peritumoral microvessel density of the prostatic adenocarcinomas and correlation with prognostic parameters.

Aim: To determine the utility of mast cell numbers and microvascular density (MVD) in evaluating acinar type of prostatic adenocarcinoma (PCa), and to ascertain a relationship between the number of mast cells with prognostic parameters (larger tumor volume, high Gleason score, lymphovascular, perineural, seminal vesicles invasion, metastatic lymph node).

Methods: The study comprised 97 radical prostatectomy specimens. The paraffin sections were stained with anti-CD31, anti- CD34 and Toluidine Blue.

Evaluation of right ventricular functions in patients with nasal polyposis: an observational study.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the right ventricular functions in patients with nasal polyposis using the strain (S) and strain rate (SR) echocardiography.

Methods: A prospective, cross-sectional observational study was performed. The study included 40 patients with nasal polyposis (NP) (Group 1), and 25 healthy controls (Group 2).

Objective: In this study, we aimed to investigate the prevalence of SLAP lesions in patients with chronic impingement syndrome. We also examined the sensitivity of O'Brien's test.

Materials And Methods: The study included 48 patients with a preliminary chronic impingement syndrome diagnosis to whom arthroscopic decompression had been planned.

Objective: Patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection may show a variety of rheumatic symptoms and signs. Anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (anti-CCP) is widely used as as a marker, particularly for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and may be positive in some diseases that also cause arthritis, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, familial Mediterranean fever, Behçet's disease, and psoriatic arthritis.

Materials And Methods: Blood samples were obtained (in routine protocols) from 57 patients with chronic HCV infection from the Gastroenterology Clinic of Ataturk University and Infectious Disease Clinic of Erzurum Region Research and Education Hospital.

Cerebellar malignant fibrous histiocytoma.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is uncommon within the central nervous system. MFH is a malignant tumor composed of a mixture of fibroblastic and histiocytic cells, and is also known as pleomorphic fibrous xanthoma, malignant fibrous xanthoma, and pleomorphic fibrous histiocytoma. It is a pleomorphic sarcoma originally found in soft tissue and there are few reported cases within the central nervous system, in particular the cerebellum.

Relation of the metabolic syndrome with proarrhythmogenic electrocardiographic parameters in patients without overt diabetes.

Objectives: We aimed to observe the relationship of the metabolic syndrome and proarrythmogenic ECG parameters and to evaluate a possible correlation of these parameters to the metabolic syndrome score in patients without overt diabetes mellitus.

Methods: The study population consisted of 142 patients with the metabolic syndrome and 170 age- and gender-matched control subjects. In the ECG recordings, resting heart rate, QRS duration, corrected QT duration and corrected QT dispersion were measured.

A case of bacillary angiomatosis developed at a burn site.

Bacillary Angiomatosis (BA) is frequently seen in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-induced immunodeficiency. Our patient was a case that developed granuloma-like lesions in the area of a burn, 8 days after being burnt on the upper right arm by scalding water. No indication of immune deficiency was observed and no history of direct contact with cats was evident.

Liver alveolar echinococcosis metastasized to the breast.

Background: Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a potentially fatal and chronically progressive infestation produced by the multivesicular metacestode of Echinococcus multilocularis, which most commonly affects the liver, lungs, and brain.

Case Report: We present a case of AE in which an alveolar cyst, as a result of exophytic growth, adhered to intra-abdominal and pelvic organs and metastasized to the breast. Exploration showed that the exophytic cyst in the liver filled the entire abdominal cavity, reaching to the uterus and bladder, and was adherent to the neighboring tissues and organs.

Effect of mirtazapine on oxidative stress created in rat kidneys by ischemia-reperfusion.

In this study, the effect of mirtazapine on rat kidneys versus ischemia-reperfusion (IR) damage was biochemically and histopathologically investigated. The results have shown that malondialdehyde (MDA) level of healthy rat group is 15.2 mol/g protein.

Mesenteric calcified cystic lymphangioma in an adult patient.

Abdominal cystic lymphangiomas are rare congenital benign malformations of the lymphatic system. To the best of our knowledge, only 6 mesenteric calcified cystic lymphangiomas have ever been reported. We herein describe a woman who presented to our hospital with stomachache that had been continuous for approximately 8 months.

Intraoperative sentinel lymph node mapping in patients with colon cancer: study of 38 cases.

Background/aims: Sentinel lymph node mapping has become a cornerstone of oncologic surgery because it is a proven method for identifying nodal disease in melanoma and breast cancer. In addition, it can ameliorate the surgical morbidity secondary to lymphadenectomy. However, experience with sentinel lymph node mapping for carcinoma of the colon and other visceral malignancies is limited.

Comparison of total thyroidectomy, bilateral subtotal thyroidectomy and Dunhill operations in the treatment of benign thyroid disorders.

Aim: The surgical treatment of benign thyroid disease is still controversial. Many treatment modalities have been described for the surgical management of various thyroid diseases, including excision, bilateral subtotal thyroidectomy (BST), near-total thyroidectomy, and total thyroidectomy (TT).

Methods: Hospital records were reviewed for 2863 patients who underwent thyroid surgery for presumed multinodular goiter (MNG) between 1990 and 2009.

Ki-67 and Bcl-2 in colorectal polyps with breast cancer.

Background: The most common second primary cancer in women who survive breast cancer is colorectal cancer. Population cohort studies suggest that the risk of colorectal cancer is also high in female relatives of women with breast cancer compared to the general population. The histological distinction between a large hyperplastic polyp and a serrated adenoma is not straightforward and there is probably no sharp division between hyperplastic polyposis and 'serrated adenomatous polyposis'.

High mobility group box protein-1 (HMGB-1) as a new diagnostic marker in patients with acute appendicitis.

Background: The aim of this prospective study was therefore to evaluate the diagnostic value of preoperative serum High Mobility Group Box Protein-1 (HMGB-1) levels in patients with Acute Appendicitis (AA) who show normal white blood cell count (WBC) counts.

Method: Our study was carried out from October 2010 through November 2010 and included 20 healthy control group participants and 60 patients who presented at the emergency department of Erzurum Training and Research Hospital in Turkey with acute abdominal pain complaints, who were pathologically diagnosed with AA after laparotomy, and who agreed to participate in the study.

Results: Of the 60 patients who underwent appendectomies, 36 were male and 24 were female, and of the healthy group, 12 were male and 8 female.

Cholestatic hepatitis due to Salmonella typhi.

Salmonella infection occurs worldwide and is still an important public health problem in many developing countries. The infection can affect almost all major organs including the liver. Severe hepatic involvement with a clinical feature of acute hepatitis is a rare complication.
