Between 10% and 15% of hypothyroid patients experience persistent symptoms despite achieving biochemical euthyroidism. Unexplained persistent symptoms can be a sign of somatization. This is associated with distress and high health care resource use and can be classified as somatic symptom disorder (SSD).

Purpose: Thermal ablations (TA) are gaining ground as alternative options to conventional therapies for symptomatic benign thyroid nodules. Little is known about the impact of nodule biology on the outcomes of TA. The aim of our study was to evaluate the baseline immunocytochemistry profile of thyroid nodules that were poorly responsive to TA in order to identify potential predictors of the treatment response.

Background: The detection of thyroid nodules has been increasing over time, resulting in an extensive use of fine-needle aspiration (FNA) and cytology. Tailored methods are required to improve the management of thyroid nodules, including algorithms and web-based tools.

Study Aims: To assess the performance of the Thyroid Nodule App (TNAPP), a web-based, readily modifiable, interactive algorithmic tool, in improving the management of thyroid nodules.

Introduction: Obesity is a global pandemic and is cause of serious concern in all regions of the world. It is important to raise the attention of health care professionals in order to provide early treatment of patients with obesity. Obesity management, however, varies greatly amongst endocrinologists with respect to attitudes to diagnosis and treatment.

Objective: Thyroid nodule ultrasound characteristics are used as an indication for fine-needle aspiration cytology, usually as the basis for Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System (TIRADS) score calculation. Few studies on interobserver variation are available, all of which are based on analysis of preselected still ultrasound images and often lack surgical confirmation.

Methods: After the blinded online evaluation of video recordings of the ultrasound examinations of 47 consecutive malignant and 76 consecutive benign thyroid lesions, 7 experts from 7 thyroid centers answered 17 TIRADS-related questions.

Background: Fine needle aspiration (FNA) is the procedure of choice in the evaluation of thyroid nodules. Nodules with indeterminate cytological categories, Bethesda III and IV, pose challenges in clinical practice and are frequently submitted to diagnostic surgery. CytoFoam Core (CFCS) uses an absorbent foam device inserted into the needle hub to collect the cytological sample aspirated during FNA.

Aims: Metformin is the most widely used drug for the first-line treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), but its use and schedule have been poorly investigated in elderly patients.

Methods: We conducted an observational, cross-sectional, multicentric study on metformin in T2DM outpatients older than 65 years who were taking the drug for at least 6 months and referred to Italian Endocrinology and Diabetology Services. The primary endpoint was daily metformin dose, and secondary endpoints were the correlations between metformin dose and age, comorbidities, and concomitant use of other drugs.

Introduction: Multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS), is a syndrome characterised by increased sensitivity to the exposure of environmental chemicals (1). There are considerable difficulties in reaching a good estimate of the prevalence of disease and the main pathogenetic hypotheses take into account both the organic and psychiatric/psychological factors. Treatment with epidermal growth factor tyrosine kinase receptor inhibitors (tkis), like Osimertinib, results in improved progression-free survival (PFS) compared to chemotherapy, in Non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation (2).

Primary acinic cell carcinoma (ACC) of the lung is an extremely rare neoplasm that more often arises near to a right bronchus. It is characterized by two populations of clear and dark eosinophilic cells, arranged in a glandular acinar pattern. Mitosis are rare and tumor cells show small and eccentric nuclei.

Objective: Management of hypothyroidism is controversial because of medication cost pressures and scientific uncertainty on how to address treatment dissatisfaction experienced by some patients. The objective was to investigate the experience and preferences of UK endocrinologists in use of thyroid hormones.

Design: Web-based survey.

Background: Hypothyroidism is a topic that continues to provoke debate and controversy with regards to specific indications, type of thyroid hormone substitution and efficacy. We investigated the use of thyroid hormones in clinical practice in Belgium, a country where currently only levothyroxine (LT4) tablet formulations are available.

Method: Members of the Belgian Endocrine Society were invited to respond to an online questionnaire.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the impact of low-dose iodine-131 therapy on genetic damage in patients, particularly focusing on DNA damage caused by oxidative stress.
  • It compares two groups: one prepared with thyroid hormone withdrawal and the other with recombinant human thyroid-stimulating hormone (rhTSH), assessing genetic alterations before and after therapy.
  • The findings reveal increased stable chromosome damage in the hormone withdrawal group, correlated with higher radiation retention and oxidative stress, highlighting the potential risks associated with this preparation method.

Objective: The first edition of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology/American College of Endocrinology/Associazione Medici Endocrinologi Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Thyroid Nodules was published in 2006 and updated in 2010 and 2016. The American Association of Clinical Endocrinology/American College of Endocrinology/Associazione Medici Endocrinologi multidisciplinary thyroid nodules task force was charged with developing a novel interactive electronic algorithmic tool to evaluate thyroid nodules.

Methods: The Thyroid Nodule App (termed TNAPP) was based on the updated 2016 clinical practice guideline recommendations while incorporating recent scientific evidence and avoiding unnecessary diagnostic procedures and surgical overtreatment.

Aims: The introduction of immunotherapy for patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) raises the need for harmonisation between different types of antibody and immunohistochemistry platform for evaluating the expression of PD-L1 by use of the combined positive score (CPS) in this tumour. The aim of this study was to compare the expression of PD-L1 as determined with the CPS and two widely used assays (the 22C3 PharmDx assay and the SP263 assay) in a cohort of HNSCCs.

Methods And Results: We analysed 43 whole sections of HNSCC with two different anti-PD-L1 antibodies, 22C3 and SP263.
