The chemoattractant protein chemerin is protective in experimental hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and high expression in HCC tissues of Asian patients was related to a favorable prognosis. Studies from Asia found reduced expression of chemerin in HCC compared to para-tumor tissues while our previous analysis observed the opposite. Aim of this study was to correlate chemerin expression in HCC tissues with disease severity of European patients Hepatocyte chemerin protein expression was assessed by immunohistochemistry in HCC tissue of 383 patients, and was low in 24%, moderate in 49% and high in 27%.

A novel dual functional and visual rhodamine ethylenediamine bis(triazolyl silsesquioxane) (RBS) chemosensor was successfully synthesized using "click" chemistry. The results have unambiguously demonstrated that RBS can act in fluorescent and colorimetric sensing of Cu and Zn by their respective coordination with triazole structures and, more importantly, it has also been found that triazole-amide of RBS could turn on chelation-enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) of Cu. Remarkably, the addition of Cu triggered an enhanced fluorescent emission by 63.

A multitude of pathological and inflammatory processes determine the clinical course after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). However, our understanding of predictive factors and therapeutic consequences is limited. We evaluated the predictive value of clinically relevant factors readily available in the ICU setting, such as white blood cell (WBC) count and CRP, for two of the leading comorbidities, delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) and ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt dependency in aSAH patients with and without corticosteroid treatment.

Biostimulants are an interesting strategy to increase crop tolerance to water deficits, and there is an extensive bibliography on them. However, most of them need to be treated continuously to increase protection throughout the growth cycle. In this context, we chose menadione sodium bisulfite, whose protective effect against water deficit has been previously demonstrated but only for a short period of time.

Background: When dental patients seek care, treatments are not always successful, that is patients' oral health problems are not always eliminated or substantially reduced. Identifying these patients (treatment non-responders) is essential for clinical decision-making. Group-based trajectory modeling (GBTM) is rarely used in dentistry, but a promising statistical technique to identify non-responders in particular and clinical distinct patient groups in general in longitudinal data sets.

Visceral adiposity is strongly associated with liver steatosis, which predisposes to the development of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Mice with loss of the molecular adapter protein beta-2 syntrophin (SNTB2) have greatly reduced intra-abdominal fat mass. Hepatic expression of proteins with a role in fatty acid metabolism such as fatty acid synthase was nevertheless normal.

Article Synopsis
  • Glioblastoma (GB) is the most common and aggressive brain tumor in adults, typically treated with surgery followed by radiochemotherapy, primarily using temozolomide and sometimes tumor-treating fields.
  • A meta-analysis reviewed recent randomized controlled trials on targeted therapies for newly diagnosed GB, focusing on agents like protein kinase inhibitors and anti-angiogenic approaches.
  • While targeted therapies improved progression-free survival (PFS), particularly with VEGF inhibition using bevacizumab, they did not significantly enhance overall survival (OS), showing no clear benefit in that regard.

Intestinal microbiome diversity plays an important role in the pathophysiology of acute gastrointestinal (GI) graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and influences the outcome of patients after allogeneic stem cell transplantation (ASCT). We analyzed clinical data and blood samples taken preconditioning and on the day of ASCT from 587 patients from 7 German centers of the Mount Sinai Acute GVHD International Consortium, dividing them into single-center test (n = 371) and multicenter validation (n = 216) cohorts. Regenerating islet-derived 3α (Reg3α) serum concentration of day 0 correlated with clinical data as well as urinary 3-indoxylsulfate (3-IS) and Clostridiales group XIVa, indicators of intestinal microbiome diversity.

TSPO PET signal using [F]GE180 is associated with survival in recurrent gliomas.

Eur J Nucl Med Mol Imaging

February 2023

Department of Nuclear Medicine, University Hospital, LMU Munich, Marchioninistr. 15, 81377, Munich, Germany.

Purpose: Glioma patients, especially recurrent glioma, suffer from a poor prognosis. While advances to classify glioma on a molecular level improved prognostication at initial diagnosis, markers to prognosticate survival in the recurrent situation are still needed. As 18 kDa translocator protein (TSPO) was previously reported to be associated with aggressive histopathological glioma features, we correlated the TSPO positron emission tomography (PET) signal using [F]GE180 in a large cohort of recurrent glioma patients with their clinical outcome.

Introduction: The 18 kDa translocator protein (TSPO) receives growing interest as a biomarker in glioblastoma. Mouse models can serve as an important tool for the investigation of biomarkers in glioblastoma, but several glioblastoma models indicated only low TSPO-PET signals in contrast to high TSPO-PET signals of human glioblastoma. Thus, we aimed to investigate TSPO-PET imaging in the syngeneic immunocompetent SB28 mouse model, which is thought to closely represent the tumor microenvironment (TME) of human glioblastoma.

Antithrombin (AT) deficiency is a high-risk thrombophilia and a rare condition. The risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) is increased in AT-deficient women during pregnancy and the postpartum period and is especially high in women with a prior history of VTE. A thorough assessment of VTE risk is recommended in pregnant AT-deficient women, comprising the degree and type of AT deficiency, genetic mutations, personal and family history, and additional preexisting or pregnancy-specific risk factors.
