The acute-phase protein pentraxin-3 (PTX3) is a component of the innate immune system. Inflammation and tissue injury increased PTX3 in the injured liver, and accordingly, circulating PTX3 was induced in patients with chronic liver diseases. In the present study, PTX3 protein was determined in systemic, hepatic, and portal vein plasma of patients with liver cirrhosis to assess a possible association between hepatic PTX3 release and extent of liver injury.

Initial treatment (ventilator settings, rescue therapy, supportive measures), and prevention of critical events improve survival in ARDS patients, but little data exists on its effect on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and return to work (RtW) in survivors. We analyzed the association of the intensity of treatment at ARDS onset and the incidence of critical events on HRQOL and RtW a year after ICU discharge. In a prospective multi-centre cohort study, the intensity of treatment and the incidence of critical events were determined at 61 ICUs in Germany.

Here, we define mechanisms whereby chikungunya virus (CHIKV), a mosquito-transmitted RNA virus that causes outbreaks of acute and chronic arthritis in humans, hinders dLN antiviral B cell responses.

Zoonotic spillover infections with Borna disease virus 1 leading to fatal human encephalitis, 1999-2019: an epidemiological investigation.

Background: In 2018-19, Borna disease virus 1 (BoDV-1), the causative agent of Borna disease in horses, sheep, and other domestic mammals, was reported in five human patients with severe to fatal encephalitis in Germany. However, information on case frequencies, clinical courses, and detailed epidemiological analyses are still lacking. We report the occurrence of BoDV-1-associated encephalitis in cases submitted to the Institute of Clinical Microbiology and Hygiene, Regensburg University Hospital, Regensburg, Germany, and provide a detailed description of newly identified cases of BoDV-1-induced encephalitis.

Precursors for Nonlymphoid-Tissue Treg Cells Reside in Secondary Lymphoid Organs and Are Programmed by the Transcription Factor BATF.

Specialized regulatory T (Treg) cells accumulate and perform homeostatic and regenerative functions in nonlymphoid tissues. Whether common precursors for nonlymphoid-tissue Treg cells exist and how they differentiate remain elusive. Using transcription factor nuclear factor, interleukin 3 regulated (Nfil3) reporter mice and single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq), we identified two precursor stages of interleukin 33 (IL-33) receptor ST2-expressing nonlymphoid tissue Treg cells, which resided in the spleen and lymph nodes.

Mitotane is the only drug approved for the therapy of adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC). Its clinical use is limited by the occurrence of relapse during therapy. To investigate the underlying mechanisms in vitro, we here generated mitotane-resistant cell lines.
