Characteristics and Outcomes of Autoimmune Hepatitis from a Tertiary Paediatric Centre, Cape Town, South Africa.

Objectives: To describe the clinical characteristics, biochemical and histological features, outcomes and predictors of prognosis of children with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) from a paediatric centre in South Africa.

Methods: Thirty-nine children diagnosed with AIH at Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital between 2005 and 2015 were included. Relevant patient's data were retrieved from the hospital's medical records and database.

Short-term outcomes of HIV-exposed and HIV-unexposed preterm, very low birthweight neonates: a longitudinal, hospital-based study.

Objective: To compare short-term outcomes of very low birthweight (VBLW, <1500 g) neonates by maternal HIV status.

Design: Retrospective hospital-based cohort in Cape Town, South Africa.

Results: Of 1579 mothers, 316 (20%) were HIV-positive; 183/316 (58%) received ≥8 weeks of antenatal antiretrovirals.

Environmental risk factors for asthma in 13-14 year old African children.

Background Asthma prevalence in African children is high. Factors driving the prevalence or disease severity are poorly understood. This study aims to investigate environmental factors associated with asthma and severity in African children.

Behavioral disorder in people with an intellectual disability and epilepsy: A report of the Intellectual Disability Task Force of the Neuropsychiatric Commission of ILAE.

The management and needs of people with intellectual disability (ID) and epilepsy are well evidenced; less so, the comorbidity of behavioral disorder in this population. "Behavioral disorder" is defined as behaviors that are difficult or disruptive, including stereotypes, difficult or disruptive behavior, aggressive behavior toward other people, behaviors that lead to injury to self or others, and destruction of property. These have an important link to emotional disturbance.

Medical management of children with epilepsy.

Epilepsy is a common neurological condition presenting to the pediatrician. There are many seizure mimics and the differential diagnosis of paroxysmal events is wide which may make a definitive diagnosis challenging. Epilepsy is a heterogeneous condition with marked variability in presentation, underlying etiologies, associated comorbidities and outcomes.

Interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma: a report of four paediatric cases and review of the literature.

Aims: To report a series of four paediatric cases of interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma (IDCS) and add to the known extranodal sites of occurrence for this tumour. Neoplasms derived from interdigitating dendritic cells are rare, with only 33 cases being reported in the literature (Medline search). These tumours usually occur in lymph nodes in the adult population.
