Article Synopsis
  • Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is an important diagnostic method for evaluating thyroid cancer in Sweden, assessing its effectiveness by comparing FNAC results with final histology post-surgery.
  • In a study involving over 2,500 patients, FNAC correctly diagnosed thyroid cancer in 73% of cases, showing a higher sensitivity for larger nodules (>1 cm) compared to smaller ones (<1 cm).
  • The majority of FNAC procedures (85%) were guided by ultrasound, leading to an improved diagnostic sensitivity of 86.9% in larger lesions, highlighting FNAC’s role in the diagnostic process for thyroid cancer.

Background: Coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) in patients with post-coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) has a high diagnostic accuracy for visualization of grafts. Invasive coronary angiography (ICA) in patients with CABG is associated with increased procedural time, contrast agent administration, radiation exposure, and complications, compared with non-CABG patients. The aim of this multicenter, randomized controlled trial was to compare the strategy of CCTA-guided ICA versus classic ICA in patients with prior CABG.

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men, with many treatment modalities available for patients, such as radical prostatectomy, external beam radiotherapy, brachytherapy, high-intensity focused ultrasound, cryotherapy, electroporation and other whole-gland or focal ablative novel techniques. Unfortunately, up to 60% of men with prostate cancer experience recurrence at 5 to 10 years. Salvage radical prostatectomy can be offered as an option in the setting of recurrence after a primary non-surgical treatment.

Congenital deformities of the spine lead to an imbalance in the longitudinal growth of the spine. These growth abnormalities may lead to three main patterns of deformity: scoliosis (the most common), kyphosis or lordosis (the least common). Despite the recent improvements in imaging and the routine use of neuromonitoring in the surgical treatment of congenital kyphosis, this surgery may be associated with a high rate of complications such as neurologic deficit, pulmonary thromboembolic events, infection, deep vein thrombosis, implant failure, and dural injury.

Metastases outside the liver and abdominal/retroperitoneal lymph nodes are nowadays detected frequently in patients with neuroendocrine tumours (NETs), owing to the high sensitivity of positron emission tomography (PET) with Gallium-68-DOTA-somatostatin analogues (Ga-SSA) and concomitant diagnostic computed tomography (CT). Our aim was to determine the prevalence of extra-abdominal metastases on Ga-DOTATOC-PET/CT in a cohort of patients with small intestinal (Si-NET) and pancreatic NET (Pan-NET), as well as that of pancreatic metastasis in patients with Si-NET. Among 2090 patients examined by Ga-DOTATOC-PET/CT at two tertiary referral centres, a total of 1177 patients with a history of Si- or Pan-NET, were identified.

Pancreatic metastases in patients with neuroendocrine neoplasms: A multi-centre cohort study.

J Neuroendocrinol

April 2023

Neuroendocrine Tumour Unit, ENETS Centre of Excellence, First Department of Propaedeutic and Internal Medicine, Laiko Hospital, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Athens, Greece.

Pancreatic metastases (PMs) from neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are rare but the increased sensitivity of new diagnostic tools such as Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT has resulted in their increased recognition at initial diagnosis or follow-up. A retrospective analysis of the data of patients from six tertiary referral centres was performed in order to identify the characteristics and the prognostic significance of PMs in patients with NENs. We used a control group of 69 age-, sex- and primary tumour - matched NEN patients from the same cohort with stage IV disease but no PMs.

Introduction: Clinical disadvantages of initiating ART at low CD4 counts have been clearly demonstrated but whether any excess risk remains even after reaching relatively high/safe CD4 levels remains unclear. We explore whether individuals starting ART with <500 CD4 cells/μL who increased their CD4 count above this level, have, from this point onwards, similar risk of clinical progression to serious AIDS/non-AIDS events or death with individuals starting ART with ≥500 CD4 cells/μL.

Methods: Data were derived from a multicenter cohort (AMACS).
