A 52-year-old woman taking a Chinese herbal medicine for 10 months was admitted to our hospital for recurrent severe headaches, nausea and vomiting. Brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed convexity subarachnoid hemorrhage in the left occipital and parietal lobes. Brain magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) showed multifocal segmental stenosis of cerebral arteries.

Real-world efficacy of elbasvir and grazoprevir for hepatitis C virus (genotype 1): A nationwide, multicenter study by the Japanese Red Cross Hospital Liver Study Group.

Aim: The present study aimed to determine the real-world efficacy and safety of the non-structural protein (NS)5A inhibitor elbasvir (EBR) combined with the NS3/4A protease inhibitor grazoprevir (GZR) in patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1 (GT1) infection.

Methods: This study retrospectively evaluated the rate of sustained virologic response at 12 weeks post-treatment (SVR12) and the safety of EBR/GZR treatment in 159 men and 194 women with a median age of 72 years, and it assessed factors associated with the SVR12 rate. The attending physicians were responsible for selecting candidate patients for EBR/GZR in this retrospective study.

The effects of teriparatide on acceleration of bone healing following atypical femoral fracture: comparison between daily and weekly administration.

Unlabelled: We compared the effectiveness of promoting bone healing between two teriparatide preparations for atypical femoral fracture (AFF). A total of 45 AFFs were included in this study, and we compared the duration of bone union. Teriparatide administered by daily injection enhanced bone union more than weekly administration in complete AFFs.

Real-world efficacy and safety of ledipasvir and sofosbuvir in patients with hepatitis C virus genotype 1 infection: a nationwide multicenter study by the Japanese Red Cross Liver Study Group.

Background: We aimed to describe the real-world efficacy and safety of combination therapy with ledipasvir and sofosbuvir (LDV/SOF) for chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1 (GT1) infection.

Methods: This retrospective analysis of a prospective, nationwide, multicenter registry included GT1-infected patients treated with LDV/SOF for 12 weeks. We assessed the rate of sustained virological response at 12 weeks post-treatment (SVR12), incidence of adverse events, and serum markers of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

Efficacy of daclatasvir plus asunaprevir in patients with hepatitis C virus infection undergoing and not undergoing hemodialysis.

Aim: To evaluate the virologic responses and clinical course of daclatasvir plus asunaprevir treatment in non-hemodialysis (non-HD) and hemodialysis (HD) patients infected with genotype 1 hepatitis C virus (HCV).

Methods: A total of 1113 non-HD patients and 67 HD patients were assessed. To evaluate pretreatment factors contributing to sustained virological response at 12 weeks (SVR12), univariate and multivariate analyses were carried out.

Current Status of Uterine Leiomyosarcoma in the Tohoku Region: Results of the Tohoku Translational Center Development Network Survey.

Background: To prepare for a future clinical trial for improving the long-term prognosis of patients with uterine leiomyosarcoma (ULMS), we conducted a multi-institutional survey in the Tohoku region of Japan.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study between 2011 and 2014 in member institutions of the Tohoku Translational Research Center Development Network.

Results: A total of 53 patients with ULMS were registered in 31 institutions for the present survey.

Complex Pattern of Resistance-Associated Substitutions of Hepatitis C Virus after Daclatasvir/Asunaprevir Treatment Failure.

Backgrounds & Aims: We aimed to clarify the characteristics of resistance-associated substitutions (RASs) after treatment failure with NS5A inhibitor, daclatasvir (DCV) in combination with NS3/4A inhibitor, asunaprevir (ASV), in patients with chronic hepatitis C virus genotype 1b infection.

Methods: This is a nationwide multicenter study conducted by the Japanese Red Cross Liver Study Group. The sera were obtained from 68 patients with virological failure after 24 weeks of DCV/ASV treatment.

The Modified 3-square Flap Method for Reconstruction of Toe Syndactyly.

Bandoh reported the 3-square-flap method as a procedure for interdigital space reconstruction in patients with minor syndactyly. We recently modified this flap design so that it could be used in the treatment of toe syndactyly involving fusion of the areas distal to the proximal interphalangeal joint. With our method, the reconstructed interdigital space consists of 4 oblong flaps (A through D).

Cystometric evaluation of recovery in hypocompliant defunctionalized bladder as a result of long-term dialysis after kidney transplantation.

Objectives: To evaluate the functional recovery of a pretransplant hypocompliant bladder in patients without neurological disorders, and to determine its relationship with ureteral complications, including vesicoureteral reflux.

Methods: A total of 61 patients without neurogenic disorders, who underwent video water cystometry pre- and 1 year post-transplantation, were enrolled. Cystometric bladder capacity and maximum intravesical pressure were measured, and compliance was calculated by the elevation in intravesical pressure as a result of an increase in volume.

Distinct molecular mechanisms of HTRA1 mutants in manifesting heterozygotes with CARASIL.

Objective: To elucidate the molecular mechanism of mutant HTRA1-dependent cerebral small vessel disease in heterozygous individuals.

Methods: We recruited 113 unrelated index patients with clinically diagnosed cerebral small vessel disease. The coding sequences of the HTRA1 gene were analyzed.

Usefulness of Titanized Polypropylene Mesh and an Anchor System for Correction of Lower Lid Retraction.

Because of the lower eyelid's free edge anatomy, it is difficult to preserve its contours after reconstruction. We recently attempted a new operative procedure to treat 2 cases of lower lid retraction by using a titanized polypropylene mesh and an anchor system. As the lower lid skin is elevated laterally in an oblique upward direction, the location of the mesh insertion is decided and the site is marked accordingly.

Narrow-band imaging (NBI) magnifying endoscopic classification of colorectal tumors proposed by the Japan NBI Expert Team.

Many clinical studies on narrow-band imaging (NBI) magnifying endoscopy classifications advocated so far in Japan (Sano, Hiroshima, Showa, and Jikei classifications) have reported the usefulness of NBI magnifying endoscopy for qualitative and quantitative diagnosis of colorectal lesions. However, discussions at professional meetings have raised issues such as: (i) the presence of multiple terms for the same or similar findings; (ii) the necessity of including surface patterns in magnifying endoscopic classifications; and (iii) differences in the NBI findings in elevated and superficial lesions. To resolve these problems, the Japan NBI Expert Team (JNET) was constituted with the aim of establishing a universal NBI magnifying endoscopic classification for colorectal tumors (JNET classification) in 2011.

Usefulness of Simple-Designed Bilobed Flap for Reconstruction of Ischial Decubitus Ulcer.

The pressure ulcer of the ischial region is often accompanied by complete paraplegia in patients with spinal cord injury and is attributable to the compression and breakdown of tissue arising from constant sitting. Characteristically, a pressure ulcer of this region is circular and deep. We recently reconstructed ischial decubitus ulcer of 8 patients using simple-designed bilobed flap.

Anterior Hip Subluxation due to Lumbar Degenerative Kyphosis and Posterior Pelvic Tilt.

Nontraumatic anterior subluxation and dislocation of the hip joint are extremely rare. A 58-year-old woman presented to our outpatient clinic with left hip pain with a duration of 15 years. There was no history of trauma or other diseases.

Varicella-zoster virus-associated fulminant hepatitis following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for multiple myeloma.

Disseminated visceral varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infection rarely occurs in recipients of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). To date, only a few cases of isolated VZV-induced fulminant hepatitis following allo-HSCT have been reported. We herein describe the case of a 47-year-old Japanese man with multiple myeloma who developed fulminant hepatitis 17 months after undergoing allo-HSCT.

[A case of peritoneal dissemination of postoperative primary duodenal cancer successfully treated by TS-1 therapy].

A 62-year-old man reported to our hospital with serious complaints of abdominal pain, vomiting, and weight loss. An endoscopic examination detected a type 2 tumor of the descending limb of the duodenum. With a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma based on the biopsy finding, the patient was subjected to surgery.
