Objective: Refeeding oedema, believed to result from the effects of insulin on renal sodium retention and subsequent oedema formation, typically occurs during the first 2 weeks after reintroduction of nutrition in individuals with severe malnutrition and can intensify body image distress in patients with eating disorders (EDs). Phosphate supplements have been found to increase insulin sensitivity, and it is hypothesised that they may also contribute to refeeding oedema in patients with EDs.
Method: In this retrospective cohort study of 633 patients with severe malnutrition due to anorexia nervosa (AN) or avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), the impact of phosphate supplementation on the rate of weight gain was investigated.

Background: Multidisciplinary cardiogenic shock (CS) programs have been associated with improved outcomes, yet practical guidance for developing a CS program is lacking.
Methods: A survey on CS program development and operational best practices was administered to 12 institutions in diverse sociogeographic regions and practice settings. Common steps in program development were identified.

Background: Higher level of care (HLOC) treatment for eating disorders (EDs) is sometimes necessary, but research is lacking on whether HLOCs are actually more effective than less structured, lower levels of care. The purpose of the current study was to compare outcomes for patients with EDs at low weights who entered 24/7 care (inpatient and residential) to those entering non-24/7 care (partial hospitalization programming and intensive outpatient programming).
Methods: Participants were 1104 adults with body mass indices (BMI) between 14 and 17 receiving treatment for an ED at a large multisite treatment facility offering HLOCs between August 2019 and February 2024.

Environmental temperature shapes the ontogeny of ectotherms by influencing rates of growth and development which can be key determinants of survival. Whereas the escalating impacts of water management on freshwater ecosystems is well documented, the effects of cold-water releases from dams-which can alter downstream temperatures-remains relatively underexplored but may present novel challenges to endemic ectotherms. Specifically, little is known about how thermal depressions reshape phenotypic and genetic patterns during larval metamorphosis for fishes that evolved in warmwater systems.

Migratory animals likely play an important role in the geographic spread of parasites. In fact, a common assumption is that parasites are potentially transmitted by migratory animals at temporary stopover sites along migratory routes, yet very few studies have assessed whether transmission at stopover sites can or does occur. We investigated the potential for a group of vector-transmitted parasites, the avian haemosporidians, to be transmitted during migratory stopover periods at Rushton Woods Preserve in Pennsylvania, USA.

Currently, global annual CO emissions from fossil fuel consumption are extremely high, surpassing tens of billions of tons, yet our capacity to capture and utilize CO remains below a small fraction of the amount generated. Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) systems, an integration of microbial metabolism with electrochemistry, have emerged as a highly efficient and promising bio-based carbon-capture-and-utilization technology over other conventional techniques. MES is a unique technology for lowering the atmospheric CO as well as CO in the biogas, and also simultaneously convert them to renewable bioenergy, such as biomethane.

Background: Anorexia Nervosa is a highly lethal illness that is also associated with many medical complications. Food restriction and weight loss define this illness. Most of its physical complications are reversible with weight restoration, with the notable exception of the loss of bone density, which is commonly present in anorexia nervosa.

Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) is a well-known trauma-focused treatment that aims to generate more adaptive posttrauma cognitions and emotions. Changes in cognitions are theorized to be the mechanism by which CPT leads to improvement in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. The present study aimed to explore associations between changes in PTSD symptom clusters during CPT.

Background: Despite widespread use of higher levels of care in treating eating disorders in adolescents, research supporting the use of these treatments remains limited by small sample sizes and a predominant focus on anorexia nervosa. Further, existing data regarding predictors of outcome have yielded mixed findings. In the current study, we evaluated treatment outcomes and predictors of outcome among a large sample of adolescents with eating disorders presenting to inpatient, residential, partial hospitalization programs, and intensive outpatient programs across the United States.

Exercise mechanical efficiency typically falls within the range of approximately 20 to 25%. This means that a great part of the metabolic energy converted to generate movement is released as heat. Therefore, the rise in core temperature during endurance exercise in humans is proportional to generated work.

The World Health Organization's declaration of mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) as a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) in July 2022, followed by its resurgence in 2024, has sparked concerns about its potential impact on sports, especially contact sports such as football. Although mpox is not a pandemic (as of late September 2024), the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) experience offers valuable lessons for proactive planning in sports. Our conceptual framework has been designed to draw insightful lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic to assist sports organizations in planning for and preventing similar situations.

Mealworms () larvae can degrade both plastics and lignocellulose through synergistic biological activities of their gut microbiota because they share similarities in chemical and physical properties. Here, a total of 428 genes encoding lignocellulose-degrading enzymes were screened from the gut microbiome of larvae to identify poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)-degrading activities. Five genes were successfully expressed in , among which a feruloyl esterase-like enzyme named Fae-PETase demonstrated the highest PET degradation activity, converting PET into MHET (0.

Advancements in genome sequencing technology have brought unprecedented accessibility of high-throughput sequencing to species of conservation interest. The potential knowledge gained from application of these techniques is maximized by availability of high-quality, annotated reference genomes for endangered species. However, these vital resources are often lacking for endangered minnows of North America (Cypriniformes: Leuciscidae).

Objective: Hypoglycemia causes significant morbidity and mortality in patients with severe eating disorders. We measured average glycemic levels using hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) in patients hospitalized for extreme anorexia nervosa (AN) and avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID).
Methods: This was a prospective, single-center cohort study conducted in an inpatient medical stabilization unit.
