Stress and circadian systems are interconnected through the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis to maintain responses to external stimuli. Yet, the mechanisms of how such signals are orchestrated remain unknown. Here, we uncover the gut microbiota as a regulator of HPA-axis rhythmicity.

Mucoadhesion is a special case of bioadhesion in which a material adheres to soft mucosal tissues. This review elucidates our current understanding of mucoadhesion across length, time, and energy scales by focusing on relevant structural features of mucus. We highlight the importance of both covalent and non-covalent interactions that can be tailored to maximize mucoadhesive interactions, particularly concerning proteinaceous mucoadhesives, which have been explored only to a limited extent so far in the literature.

This European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) guideline provides recommendations for the management of IgE-mediated food allergy and was developed using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) approach. Following the confirmation of IgE-mediated food allergy diagnosis, allergen avoidance and dietary advice (with support of a specialised dietitian, if possible) together with the provision of a written treatment plan, education on the recognition of allergic symptoms and prescription of medication including adrenaline using an auto-injector are essential. Patients with significant anxiety and requirement for coping strategies may benefit from support from a clinical psychologist.

Introduction: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global issue that needs addressing. While antibiotic stewardship has improved often by restricting antibiotic use, some antibiotics that are still sold legally over the counter (OTC), notably in sore throat medications. Recent findings suggest OTC antibiotics could trigger cross-resistance to antibiotics used in clinical treatments, whether systemic or topical.

For locally applied, locally acting generic drug products, comparison to an originator product based on systemic exposure is usually not feasible due to low plasma concentrations and inadequate reflection of local exposure at the site of action. Where a validated PD model exists, a comparative clinical study can be performed in healthy subjects; where no surrogate endpoint is available, patients with the relevant indication need to be enrolled, with all the associated factors which could result in lack of sensitivity. Even though the need for alternative in vitro approaches has been acknowledged by both industry and regulatory bodies, the complexity of in vivo drug delivery processes makes the development of guidance documents particularly difficult.

Air sanitization is an important non-pharmaceutical intervention for mitigating the risk of indoor pathogen spreading. A dipropylene glycol-containing air sanitizer was tested against aerosolized and . The bacteria, suspended in a soil load, were aerosolized using a six-jet Collison nebulizer with pressurized air.

Introduction: Few studies have evaluated the effects of milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) on microbiota and immune markers in early infant nutrition.
Methods: In this double-blind randomized study, infants (7-18 days of age) received either bovine milk-based infant formula (Control) or similar formula with an added source (5 g/L) of bovine MFGM (INV-MFGM) for 60 days. A reference group received mother's own human milk over the same period (HM).

Breakthrough symptoms are thought to occur in roughly half of all gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) patients despite maximal acid suppression (proton pump inhibitor, PPI) therapy. Topical alginates have recently been shown to enhance mucosal defense against acid-pepsin insult during GERD. We aimed to examine potential alginate protection of transcriptomic changes in a cell culture model of PPI-recalcitrant GERD.

Crohn's disease (CD) is a complex, chronic inflammatory bowel disease characterized by unpredictable flare-ups and periods of remission. Despite advances in treatment, CD remains a significant health burden, leading to substantial direct healthcare costs and out-of-pocket expenses for patients, especially in the first-year post-diagnosis. The impact of CD on patients' quality of life is profound, with significant reductions in physical, emotional, and social well-being.

Background: To study pain, data on pain characteristics, possible triggers and consequences - such as the impact of pain on people's lives - need to be available. When not collated, described and/or organised in a systematic manner, it can be difficult to assess how useful an existing dataset may be for one's project. This data note describes and categorises the complex and multi-modal indices of pain available in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC).

The prevalence of many chronic noncommunicable diseases has been steadily rising over the past six decades. During this time, over 350,000 new chemical substances have been introduced to the lives of humans. In recent years, the epithelial barrier theory came to light explaining the growing prevalence and exacerbations of these diseases worldwide.

The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) is the most widely used rating scale to assess psychotic symptoms in patients with schizophrenia and other primary psychoses. However, a definitive consensus regarding its dimensional structure remains elusive. The present work aims to determine the number of dimensions of the scale through a network analysis approach in a sample of individuals experiencing first-episode schizophrenia spectrum disorder (FE-SSD) with minimal or no prior exposure to antipsychotic treatment.
