The Impact of Critical Listening and Critical Reading on Critical Thinking.

Behav Sci (Basel)

January 2025

Department of Turkish and Social Sciences, Faculty of Education, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University, 53200 Rize, Turkey.

Critical listening, critical reading, and critical thinking are three closely related cognitive skills that aim to evaluate information with an analytical and questioning approach. Critical listening and critical reading, which are receptive language skills, represent the application of critical thinking in different contexts. Critical thinking, which is a productive language skill, provides a framework for these two receptive language skills and enables the evaluation of the accuracy of information accessed through critical listening and critical reading, analyzing different perspectives and making inferences to reach correct conclusions.

Biology Department, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, University of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Merkez, Rize, Türkiye.

Plastic pollution constitutes one of the major environmental problems of our time, and in recent years, it has emerged as a significant threat to the environment and to various organisms, including bird species. In this context, this study, which provides the first data in Türkiye, aimed to determine the level of microplastic (MP) pollution in 12 bird species (Eurasian buzzard; short-toed snake-eagle; white stork; northern long-eared owl; common barn-owl; ruddy shelduck; Eurasian eagle-owl; scarlet macaw; common pheasant; Indian peafowl; common kestrel; and gray parrot). The results indicate that MPs were detected in 50% of the specimens (n = 20), with an average of one MP/item per individual.

Department of Educational Sciences, Atatürk Faculty of Education, Marmara University, Istanbul, Türkiye.

Introduction: Adverse and destructive situations can have a significant and long-lasting impact on organizational members, resulting in considerable disruption to organizational functioning. The occurrence of negative or traumatic events in organizations can be attributed to a range of factors, including natural adversities, as well as intentional or human-induced crises. The concept of organizational healing encompasses both the processes that enable an organization to regain functionality following adversity and the strategies that facilitate enhanced performance in the period following trauma or harm.

Background: Placental syndrome, mainly composed of preeclampsia and fetal growth restriction, has an impact on the health of mother and baby dyads. While impaired placentation is central to their pathophysiology, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain incompletely understood. This study investigates the association between placental syndrome and metabolic alterations in 1-deoxysphingolipids (1-deoxySLs) and polyamines, along with their regulatory enzymes.

Even though the effect of oil price shocks on macroeconomics has been extensively investigated, the literature on how efficiency in household energy use affect crude oil price volatility is yet explored. This study unveils whether household energy efficiency lower crude oil price volatility asymmetrically in the United States using the historical and forecast dataset that spans from 1970:Q1-2040:Q1. Applying the multivariate case of Quantile-on-Quantile Regression, the empirical results show that household energy efficiency dampens crude oil price volatility with a stronger connection in quantiles before the median quantiles of crude oil price volatility.

The life-history traits of animals are influenced by several factors. It has been proposed that key factors such as competition, predation pressure, and resource availability may differ between mainland and island populations of the same species. In this context, our study focused on an island (Yayla, Cyprus) and mainland (Hassa, Türkiye) populations of the snake-eyed skink, .

Background: In the 21st century, disasters (particularly earthquakes, which remain the leading cause of death) continue to be among the foremost issues requiring global emergency response. While the impact of advancing technologies on the environmental and human damage caused by earthquakes is still a subject of debate, search and rescue (SAR) teams and emergency departments (ED), specifically emergency physicians (EPs), play a crucial role in the most acute management of the effects of these earthquakes on human life. This study aims to examine the injury dynamics of two catastrophic earthquakes that occurred in Turkey 24 years apart from the perspective of EPs, utilizing archival records from the SAR teams in which EPs served.

There exist three principal treatment modalities employed in the management of hyperthyroidism attributable to excessive hormone secretion by the thyroid gland: antithyroid pharmacotherapy, surgical intervention, and radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy. Surgical intervention is typically indicated for markedly enlarged thyroid glands that exert pressure on the trachea. The objective of this investigation was to ascertain the influence of RAI on thyroid volume and tracheal diameter.

Electric heaters are widely used owing to their portability, fast heating, single-focus heating, and energy efficiency advantages. Manufacturers provide customers with information on the power consumption and energy efficiency classes of heaters but do not provide any information on heating patterns. Knowing the heating pattern enables users to select the correct heater, which has a significant effect on comfort, health, energy efficiency, industrial process performance, plant growth, and climate change.
