Primary themes in intergenerational justice are a healthy environment, the perpetuation of Earth's biodiversity, and the sustainable management of the biosphere. However, the current rate of species declines globally, ecosystem collapses driven by accelerating and catastrophic global heating, and a plethora of other threats preclude the ability of habitat protection alone to prevent a cascade of amphibian and other species mass extinctions. Reproduction and advanced biotechnologies, biobanking of germplasm and somatic cells, and conservation breeding programs (RBCs) offer a transformative change in biodiversity management.

Background: Sulfonamides are widely used carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (CAIs) in clinical settings, however, their nonspecific inhibition of multiple carbonic anhydrase isoforms can lead to reduced efficacy and side effects. This study aimed to develop sulfanilamide-diazo derivatives incorporating benzoic acid moieties as novel inhibitors of hCA II activity to reduce side effects and enhance selectivity for different CA isozymes.

Methods: We investigated the interaction between these derivatives and the hCA II isozyme via various spectroscopic and docking methods.

Although checklists of the Iranian ladybird beetles (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) have been made twice in recent years, they have a number of shortcomings. Moreover, since these checklist were published, several ladybird species have been added to the Iranian fauna and several previously reported have been excluded. We therefore compiled an updated checklist of Coccinellidae found in Iran and its individual provinces based on available literature and previously unpublished records.

Immuno-Informatics Insight into the Relationship Between Cholesterol and Cytokines in Cutaneous Leishmaniasis: From clinics to computation.

Sultan Qaboos Univ Med J

November 2024

Laboratory for Computational Physiology, Biology Department, Faculty of Science, Razi University, Kermanshah, Iran.

Objectives: The role of serum cholesterol and its interactions with cytokines in human cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) pathophysiology is unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation among serum total cholesterol (TC), very-low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides (TG) and cytokines (including interleukin [IL] 10), IL-12 and tumour necrosis factor-alpha [TNF-α]) in CL. The cholesterol-cytokine network was analysed to illuminate the pathogenesis of CL.

  • This study explored the effects of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiONPs) on Persian dragonhead plants grown hydroponically, focusing on varying concentrations from 0 to 2500 ppm over 21 days.
  • At 50 ppm TiONPs, the plants showed significant growth, with a 26.2% increase in shoot biomass and an 18.2% rise in height, while higher concentrations like 100 ppm negatively impacted key components such as carotenoids and chlorophyll.
  • The research indicated that low doses of TiONPs can enhance growth, while higher doses result in physiological stress and activate the plant's defense systems, suggesting 50 ppm as the optimal concentration for improved agricultural yields.
